Waiting On The Snow 12/31/2021

 Good Morning,

I am sitting at my desk this morning and some how after a restless night of sleep, I find myself wide awake and ready to write. I have equipped myself with a hot mug of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee and now have two dogs on my feet. Great start to a day!

Isaiah 55:8-9  8. "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, and neither My ways your ways, declares the Lord." 9. As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts higher than yours.

The weather forecast is a little ominous for tomorrow and I have big plans for tomorrow. New Year's Day usually has me, family and friends out chasing pheasants for a few hours. One of the family members is flying home today from Florida and due to covid and weather, many flights are being postponed or cancelled. He and his lady would be sorrowfully missed. With or without them the hunt will take place.

As I prayed for them and am still hoping things work out I was reminded through the Holy Spirit that sometimes our plans don't work out and we need to accept that what we don't know just needs to be accepted. If they don't make it, maybe God saved them from a plane crash, or contracting covid. No matter what happens today or how much snow we get tomorrow it' is all in God's hands and He knows best.

I think I was reminded of that and it will be a goal in 2022 for me to remember God' knows best. My first resolution for 2022 is to take me off of my own pedestal and humble myself before God. A great plan for 2022 is to start with knowing and accepting that God still spins the world and has control. If I were smart I wouldn't even say. "I might not like His plan, I just need to respect it." God doesn't need my opinion either. Out of love for Him I need to accept the plan without grumbling, trust Him and go forward in the way He sees fit. I will be better off by doing so.

Now I sit and wait.

God bless.

Time For Those Resolutions. 12/30/21

 Good Morning,

It's time for a big cup of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee and a little time with our two dogs.

January 1st is coming soon and many people will start thinking a bout and committing to a New Year's resolution or two.

A resolution to accomplish something can be another two way street. It could be to add something to your life or to take something away, or both.

My resolution this year is to finally complete the full study of the book of Proverbs and then to start a new workbook and study with the men at church. This is measurable and realistic. The sub compartments in this resolution is to gain knowledge that I can apply to my life and the lives of others. I also resolve to improve my health, yet I am not sure what path I will travel on that one.

Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.

The point is this. Resolutions are good, but only if they can be accomplished. Yes, the goal should stretch you a bit, but not to the point of making it impossible to achieve. Always pray before setting a goal, asking God what He wants you to do. You will feel better spiritually, mentally, and physically when you set a reasonable goal for your resolution. I have no goal to build an ark!

Have a great day!

What Can You Say? 12/29/2021

 Good Morning,

I just woke up with some folks on my mind and it is time to write as I sip on a hot cup of Door County Candy Cane Coffee.

Last night I was speaking to a mother and father who recently had their youngest son pass away and they are now facing the funeral. No matter how long I live, I believe I will never find the perfect words to say to someone who is burying their child, no matter what the age of the child is.

The best I can usually do is to let them know that I am only a phone call away and that no time is a bad time. I feel that words without action are just words.

The next thing I try to remember to do is to leave them with a sample of God's word. We all know that a few words from God is much better than the volumes we speak.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

The best we can do is to help them toward God. He is the healer of the heart.

So when all seems to be meaningless, put your faith into action and send or say some words of comfort by quoting Scripture.

Last but not least. Pray for them and with them.

Have a blessed day.

In A Small Way 12/28/21

 Good Morning,

It is a sure thing for me today that I will be tired at the end of the day. The candle has been burning at both ends for me and tonight I am going to bed very early. A hot cup of Door County White Christmas Coffee awaits me after I finish writing.

We all have our circles of influence. The circle of influence goes in two directions. In some instances our influence on others flows out and at other times the influence of others flows from them to us. We have in a small way or a big way the power to influence the decisions of others. Of course this works also in reverse. Others can have influence on our decisions.

My point today. Before giving advice, do you pray about your impact and the advice you are giving?

Proverbs 3:5Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.

Make sure the advice you are giving is Godly advice.

Pray before you speak. Ask this question. Am I giving advice just to hear myself talk or am I passing on knowledge that God has given me to share?

Be sure not to be too stubborn to not listen to advice.

Ecclesiastes 4:13 Better was a poor and wise youth than an old foolish king who no longer knew how to take advice.

You see, in a small way influence is a two way street.

Paid The Taxes 12/27/2021

 Good Morning,

This day started and by the paperwork, I see that my day will be a long one. I will be drinking my coffee on the run this morning. We will see how tomorrow works out.

The other day we received the property tax bill for our home and as usual the bill is more than it was last year. We discussed the bill and there really wasn't anything to appeal or protest, the taxes just went up.

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.

Again as usual, my wife went down to city hall with the tax bill in hand and check book in the other and paid the taxes. We are in good standing now with the city and nothing is owed to them.

My point for the day. Although I wasn't thrilled to be paying taxes at all, it was an agreement we made when we built our home. If you live in this city as well as other towns and cities, you will pay taxes, to support common grounds and receive services for your payment. My wife was telling me how as she was standing in line to pay, a woman ahead of her, just went ballistic at the clerk because of her tax bill. The clerk I was told was in tears when the lady finally left.

Now taxes are never pleasant, but is there a need or right to go off on the clerk. Even if the tax assessor was right in front of you instead of the clerk, I believe there is still the duty to be civil and respectful.

I see on the news there people abusing the flight attendants because of airline policies. Wrong people to be complaining to and no need to threaten them.

I like to use the phrase "We are better than that", but the phrase doesn't fit anymore. I don't believe we are better than that. That is the result of a decayed society. A society without respect, fear, and love for God.

I think it is time to bring God back into society and change our ways. It seems we are not better than???

The Day After Christmas 12/26/2021

 Good Morning,

A  hot cup of Door County White Christmas Coffee is at my side and two sleepy Springer Spaniels want to be fed. It is time to write.

Proverbs 27:1 Do not boast  about tomorrow, for you do not know what one day will bring.

I will be giving it one last shot at shooting some geese today as I join some friends for a late season hunt. We cleaned up the house last night from the Christmas celebrations we hosted Friday and yesterday. All the wrapping paper is bundled and ready to head to the dump. Most of the goodies have been eaten or taken to a home or two.

As my wife Rene and I discussed the last two days we concluded that all went as good as it could go and overall it was a great time spent with friends and family. So as much as possible our lives will be going back to normal and we will be looking forward to New Years Day.

I think this year made us more grateful for our friends and family more than ever before. What caused us to be that way? I am not sure, but I am glad that it did. I for one, appreciate the gift of family as ours grows smaller for now. I guess God needs to bless us with some weddings and some babies to keep the family count at least even.

If covid has taught me anything. it is not to take anything for granted. And to count each day as important. What was here today, or who was here today, could be gone tomorrow. So therefore when you can, dance, celebrate, love, laugh, work, build and let those around you know you care.

A deep thought for a Sunday morning.

Christmas Could Hurt 12/25/2021

 Good Morning,

Once again I sit in the dark, enjoying the lights of our Christmas tree drinking a hot mug of Door County White Christmas Coffee. It is time to write.

Isaiah 49:15 Can a mother forget a baby at her breast and have no compassion on the baby she has borne? Though she may forget, I will never forget.

In a few short hours we will be celebrating Christmas with some members of my wife's family. As has been the tradition, we will be serving breakfast with many items including a Christmas Kringle. I mention the Kringle  because of it's shape. It is made in a ring and the place where we purchase these offers many flavors. I chose a "Christmas" one just to fit the occasion.

Back to it's shape. These pastries are a thing of beauty to behold. They are a complete ring until you start slicing them up into pieces and serving them. Little by little the served pieces are cut away leaving you with hopefully a little piece for tomorrow's coffee. My point for today is this. Once one piece is gone , you no longer have a whole Kringle. This side of the family just buried a my brother in law and the family is one less at the table, with an empty chair. The wound is fresh and I am not sure just how jolly everyone will be. I know my wife is dealing with the loss and has been very quiet at times.

My brother in law always enjoyed the get togethers, especially the food that was served. He would volunteer to take any and all left overs if they were still available. But today, the table will be set minus 1. I know some of you out there are missing someone today and it hurts. I am praying for you even though might not have ever met one another. A loss of a child, spouse, parent, sibling, aunt, uncle or close friend hurts. It might be a loss through death or other circumstances.

Just know this. God loves you and is here for you for comfort and healing.  You are being prayed for, and are not alone. God bless.

Christmas Eve "Always Faithful" 12/24/21

 Good Morning,

The house is pretty cold right now. The fire in the hearth is taking it's time to warm up the den. But my hot mug of Door County Christmas Coffee is helping to warm up this body of mine.

It's the day before Christmas and this house will be full of hustle for a few hours, preparing the last of the dishes for tonight and some for tomorrow. I can't help but to let my mind wander back in the memory vault and it stopped on the Christmas Eve that made my Dad cry.

Galatians 5:14 For the whole law is fulfilled in one word; "You shall love your neighbor as yourself"

I wrote earlier this month how my folks fell on hard times when I was in the first and second grade and it lasted a few years. The one Christmas that I am recalling now as my eyes leak on to my shirt was one with the biggest blessing. Medical bills, and slow work really had my parents down. They knew that they would have to tell my sister and me that we just couldn't afford presents and except for a lot of venison and fish in the freezer things were looking not so hot. I used to listen to them talk while they thought I was sleeping. And it was a pretty scary thing.

The Saturday before Christmas ( Christmas Eve) my parents were up early cooking venison sausages and mom was making some type of potato dish. They were doing their best to keep Christmas somewhat normal. I was still in my pajamas when the doorbell rang. It was one of those unusually cold December days. I went to answer the door and there was a group of men standing there and what seemed to be a giant to me, asked me if my Dad was home. My mind went numb as I thought they were bill collectors coming to take our house. I told him my Dad wasn't home and slammed the door in his face. My dad asked me who it was and by the time I could answer, the dang doorbell rang again. Thinking my dad reached a point of foolishness in his life that was mind boggling and fearing for the worst I saw him open the door and say hi with enthusiasm. Dad had lost his mind and as scrawny as I was back then I was ready for a fight. I knew where to kick and take even a giant out with a well placed shot to the groin. Maybe dad had gone nuts, but not me! Then he invited them all in. The giant came in and the rest of the men went back to a panel truck. They returned to the back door and the giant opened it. They started walking in with boxes of food. Ham, potatoes, frozen meat, and canned goods. There were at least six boxes of edibles. Then out of nowhere some ladies walked into our small kitchen with boxes of wrapped Christmas presents for our family, mostly for my sister and me. I stood there and watched my Dad sit down on a chair and I saw his eyes leaking heavily. Mine are right now.  Then the giant and the rest of the folks said to my dad, "Semper Fi Marine."  Dad was a veteran of a foreign war and was a member of a VFW post. He attended meetings and it was a place of social events too. They had been told about our situation and they came to help us out.

Well, it was something I will never forget and right after my dad passed away and I was closing up his place for the winter, a car rolled into his driveway and a young couple got out and started toward me. They asked who I was and I told them. They came by to say thank you and tell me a little story about how they had hit tough times and my dad heard about it. He lived on a private lake and they told me how he gave them permission to use his small boat and fish for their suppers now and then. They also told me about how he had been helping them with some groceries. I thanked them for telling me about this and as the young man walked away, I saw the Marine Corp symbol on the back of His jacket in bold letters, it said "Semper Fi".

So tonight we will have a crock pot of sausages to share with family. They probably don't even know why this is a tradition. And as long as I am able I will have sausages to remind me of my mother cooking sausages on the Christmas Eve that almost wasn't.

The lesson here it to share. Set the example of kindness and never forget when that kindness has been extended to you.

I am sitting here right now and the only lights that are on are the ones on our Christmas tree. As I promised earlier in December to post photos all month of how my wife Rene decorates for the holidays. I have been waiting and saving this day to show off our tree.

God bless and Merry Christmas.

No Too Long Now 12/23/2021

 Good Morning,

My day began with hope of finding some pheasants today and a desire to turn them into some soup for Christmas Eve. I am enjoying a hot mug of Door County Christmas Coffee. I guess you could say I have Christmas in a cup.

Tomorrow will be Christmas Eve. Where did the month go? Soon I will be thinking ahead to spring. Not! I haven't even begun to enjoy winter yet. As dismal as things are around the world right now, I still can't help but look forward to some good food and a football game. I choose to celebrate Christmas and all it stands for despite the urge to hide under a rock like we did last year. Although our celebrations will be limited, we will still take time to read the Christmas story and pop some popcorn.

Matthew 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call him Emmanuel "which means God with us.

That Bible verse has meant a lot to me through the years. Just the thought of Jesus leaving the splendor of heaven to live on this Earth and be destined to a cross because of our sins, amazes me. I stand in awe.

So when I celebrate Christmas I will remember what all Jesus did because of love. I will remember to say thank you to God and Christmas will be complete.

I promised on December 1st to post a photo each day until Christmas of some things my wife has decorated our home with for Christmas, Here is another one.

God bless,

Marty

Tired Of Being Tired 12/22/2021

 Good Morning,

The morning came and I was ready for this one. My mug was just filled with Door County Candy Cane Coffee and it is time to write.

Well, I will be the first one to admit that this new variant of covid "omicron" and it's crazy potential hit me emotionally like a ton of bricks. Just as things were getting back to some type of normal, this one comes out of the blue and has found a new way to infect people with illness that at times leads to death. Things were looking pretty good around the world for awhile.

Last night I prayed for several people battling this latest crud and to be honest I am worn out and tired of being uneasy.

So when I get like this, I search God's Word for inspiration and comfort. These two stuck with me.

Psalm 55:22 Cast your burden on the Lord, And He shall sustain you; He shall never permit the righteous to be moved.

Psalm 31:24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord.

I don't know where this latest variant is headed but I know this. I will not travel this road alone. God is with me and you.

I did promise to post a daily photo of the different decorations my wife Rene displays for Christmas. Last night she was trying to make the tree look better with some wrapped presents. Rene likes wrapping presents and she works hard at it. Last night she had some help.

Love to all.

Talk About Being In The Dog House! 12/21/2021

 Good Morning,

Tuesday arrived right on time as I knew it would. I am blessed to have a hot cup of Door County Candy Cane Coffee within reach and now it is time to write.

The other day, I noticed something in the refrigerator and it looked homemade. To describe it would be to say it looked like candy coins. The package said it was made from sweet potatoes. I figured it was something my mother in law gave to my wife so I gave it a try. Shortly after chewing on it for awhile, I decided to ask Rene where she got them from as I quickly spit them out. She said, "You didn't eat those, did you? I nodded my head yes. She said "those are dog treats." I held back my gag reflex and drank a gallon of water. Later as I was walking by Rene she barked at me and laughed. This wasn't the first time that I have done something like this. Later while we were at a concert she asked me if I was comfortable in my seat or did I want to lay on my back so she could scratch my belly. Oh my! She thought she was so funny and she laughed for quite awhile.

Job 8:21 He will fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouting.

I actually got a laugh out of it myself. Not as much as her, but I saw the humor in it. My point for the day is this. Don't take yourself so seriously that you can't enjoy a laugh about yourself. Life is too short not to laugh, even if it is for some dumb thing you did. I truly believe we are blessed when we can laugh with others.

Last night I wasn't sleeping very well, but pretended to be asleep. I purposely was laying on Rene's side of the bed. She gave me a little nudge to move and that's when this old dog growled. She jumped back and was speechless. I guess he who laughs last, laughs hardest.

Share the laughter with others, be kind in doing so.

I promised on December 1st to post a picture each day until Christmas of some of the things Rene has decorated our home with for Christmas. Here is another one,

Love to all.

A Nice Concert With My Wife 12/20/21

 Good Morning,

I am awaiting my hot mug of Door County White Christmas Coffee to be brewed, so in the meantime I will begin to write.

Last night my wife Rene and I attended a Christmas concert held in Milwaukee's storied Riverside Theater. While watching television one night I heard that Martina McBride would be presenting a Christmas concert in our area. I mentioned it to Rene and came up with the idea that we would treat ourselves to the concert and call it our Christmas present to each other. If God allows for it, I think we will do it again next year.

Romans1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes.

The plan was set into motion and I purchased the tickets and before we knew it December 19th was here. Our nephew Matt drove us to the concert and picked us up. Our own personal taxi driver! The concert was great and Ms. McBride performed a myriad of Christmas music and a few of her own personal hits.

Much to our pleasure "Merry Christmas" was still said and religious music sung. There were also secular songs and I did enjoy Frosty the Snowman. But most of all, when she sang O Holy Night chills ran up and down my spine. It was beautiful'

As we prepared for the attending the concert, I mentioned to Rene if she thought any religious music would be sung. I was expecting it to be all secular due to the climate we are in. I was totally wrong and Ms. McBride sang loud and proud. It did my heart good to others singing with her at times.

I enjoyed my night and was warmed into the Christmas Spirit by a lady who wasn't ashamed to sing religious songs with a Christian base.

So I am making an early plea for all of you to attend church on Christmas Eve and sing loud and proud. Let the music warm your hearts.

As promised on the 1st day of December I am continuing to post a photo of the decorations my wife displays in our home for Christmas.

Here is another one.

God bless,

Marty

Make Room For 1 More. 12/19/2021

 Good Morning,

A small fire was lit this morning to take the chill out of the house. The sound of the wood crackling in the fireplace is a welcome addition to my hot cup of Door County Mistletoe Mocha Coffee.

Christmas isn't always a happy time for a everyone. I recently officiated at a funeral and that family will observe Christmas for the first time without their mother leading the Christmas charge. There are those who cannot make it home for one reason or another and will be alone on Christmas. I think of the healthcare workers who will take a shift or two at the hospitals. They won't be there to see the kids open their presents.

1 John 3:17 But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need , yet closes his heart against him. how does God's love abide in Him?

My wife and I know the healthcare scenario all too well. We both worked on holidays and missed a few family functions. We were proud to do so. Police, fire departments, and the military are also 24/7. I could make a list that would have quite a few entries for those who can't make be home for Christmas or are at home, but alone.

But, here's my thought for today. Say a little prayer and ask God to show you someone you can open your home to and set that table with an extra plate. Or ask God to show you something you can do for someone working that day. I recall a Christmas day when my wife and her department had been working a lot of extra hours. Christmas day was going to be another long one.  I got out of bed early and started baking ham. I baked some fresh buns, took some potato salad and some baked beans and delivered them to that weary group at the medical center.  Ham and rolls weren't elegant but the smiles showed me they knew I cared.

You can make a difference in someone's life by including them in your Christmas plans or performing an act of kindness to someone who is working. There is always room for one more at the table as well as in your heart. Don't consider an extra guest as a burden, but consider God blessing you with a guest He sent.

I promised at the beginning of the month that I would post a different photo each day to show how my wife decorates our house for Christmas like Santa lives here. Every corner and nook and cranny is decorated. I did not realize that even the the spare roll of toilet paper in the 2nd floor bathroom is decorated. I must have been a little more awake this morning! The woman is a Christmas nut!  I love my life!

God bless,

Marty

An Early Christmas Present. 12/18/2021

 Good Morning,

The house is so quiet  right now and I am enjoying the peace as I sit and write today. Our dogs are on the floor next to me with full bellies and they are just about asleep again. My mug is steaming next to me filled with Door County Mistletoe Mocha Coffee. I think I know where I am headed today.

Psalm 77:14 You are The God who works wonders; you have made known your might among the peoples.

I would like to write about an early Christmas present that we received yesterday. For sometime now at least a couple of months we have been praying for a baby born prematurely. His name is Ezra. Ezra is the son of our youngest pastor and his wife. Because of arriving early, Ezra has had  few serious health issues, the biggest one being a brain bleed. He has been a little fighter and has had a long hospital stay. His parents and their whole family have been examples of faith and prayer. They weathered through some dark days and their faith in God carried them through. As a church, prayer upon prayer, day, and night were said and lifted to heaven. Every morning my wife and I would pray and whenever else we were led to pray for Ezra and the family.

Yesterday we were informed that Ezra was being released from the hospital and was going home! The brain bleed was better and all body systems were functioning normally. I announced the the news to Rene and of course she had tears in her eyes and I had a little hay fever attack. Real men don't cry, they have hay fever attacks.  We both hugged each other and said "Merry Christmas." We thanked God for the miracle of an early Christmas present.

My point is this. That miracle was huge and God deserves all the thanks, glory, praise and honor we can deliver.  Never ever forget to say thank you and I hope many from our church who read this will write down somewhere this day when God moved in a mighty way. We should never forget what God has done.

In keeping my promise to post a daily photo of some of the Christmas decorations my wife Rene has adorned our " Christmas House" with I have another one for you. Just one corner in the dining room.

God bless,

Marty

Where Was I In 1978? 12/17/2021

 Good Morning,

Friday arrived and I am glad it did. I have some work to do and if it gets done I might be able to enjoy a fish fry with my wife's family. We will see. My Door County Highlander Grog Coffee is tasting might fine today.

This is an important day for me and I am going to go back in my memory vault and enjoy a fond recollection of this day in 1978. It was snowing and the roads were slippery. A baby was coming any day. And back then you didn't know if it was a boy or a girl. But I was going to be a dad. Well labor hit, the water broke, and it was a long slippery ride to the hospital. The labor was fast and furious and within an hour of arriving at the hospital, our female bundle of joy entered this world and I was a dad.

Little did I know that the first cry in her life would impact me the way it did. I was proud as could be of being blessed with a healthy little girl. It's been a long time since 1978 and 10 hours worth of driving separates my little girl from dad. But I have to say this. When that phone rings, and her ring tone announces her call, I still grin and enjoy the call and at times I enjoy our talks so much I feel like a new dad all over again.

There isn't much point to the blog today except for me to acknowledge the blessing that was given to me in 1978. I am thankful each day for the privilege of being a dad to this woman now.  Happy Birthday!

Psalm 127:3 Behold, children are a blessing from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward.

As I promised earlier this month to post photos, of the decorations my wife displays in our "Christmas House" here is another one.

Have a great day. Enjoy your children and let them know they are loved.

Two Voices, One More Than Needed. 12/16/2021

 Good Morning,

A large mug of Door County Mistletoe Mocha is sitting next to me and it is time to write.

More than ever, this last summer we had more and more peddlers come to the door trying to buy or sell our home. Then there were those who wanted to fertilize our grass and those who wanted to paint our home, inside and out. We picked up our share of political poll takers. Once the weather cooled off the phone began to ring with more political calls, weight loss gimmicks, time share sales and spam calls.

But going back to the in person calls, we are very careful as to who we let into our home. So here we go. Two voices are fighting for your attention. One speaks positive, encouraging thoughts, love and peace. While the other voice casts doubt, fear, bitterness and anxiety. We need to be careful to take the negative , evil thoughts, captive before we dwell on them in our minds. Negative thoughts never send you love or strength. So to only have one voice in your head, rely on God to help you. Be careful who you let into your head.

2 Corinthians 10:5 we demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

It is a good idea also to not to transfer our thoughts to our spoken word.

Proverbs 4:23 Be careful what you think or say, for your thoughts run your life.

Reduce the noise in head. et your minds on the things from above.

Have a blessed day.

Marty

In keeping with my promise to post a photo every day of some of the decorations my wife has displayed in our "Christmas House" I have chosen another one for you to see. Today you get two.

If We Make Through December 12/15/2021

 Good Morning,

This day is shaping up to be a busy one. I am happy to hear the Door County Cherry Creme Coffee brewing in the kitchen. Some times, it is the simple pleasure of a mug of hot coffee that sets off the day.

Many years ago, when I was in the second grade our family hit hard times like I never saw before and don't want to experience again. All I can recall is that medical bills upon medical bills, health issues for my mother and a winter that started in July were about as much as my mom and dad could bear.

They used to talk at night when my dad would get home from his second shift job. I was supposed to be asleep but couldn't sleep well. Although being very young, I knew the family was in trouble. I remember my dad saying to my mother , "if we get through to the end of the month (December) work is supposed to pick up and there is supposed to be a lot of overtime." I remember praying that night and every night that we wouldn't lose our home and no matter what, we could all stay together.

The furnace was kept at very low temperature and at times I thought I would freeze to death in my own bed. We had food, and my mom and dad could stretch a chicken like no other person could.

My point is this, we made it and eventually all those bills were paid off and my folks could retire on a lake, as that was their goal. I still wonder though, was it the hard work and extra hours for my dad that turned the corner for them? Or was it the nightly prayer into a tear soaked pillow in an ice cold room a prayer that God answered?  I like to think it was both. I prayed and my dad worked hard.

James 5:16 The effective fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much.

1 Timothy 5:8 But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for the members of  his own family, he is worse than an un believer. He has denied his faith.

In keeping with my promise to display a photo of some of the Christmas decorations my wife has displayed in the "Christmas House" here is another one.  This little tree is at our front door and greets everyone as they enter.

God bless,

You Won't Find It Under The Tree. 12/14.2021

 Good Morning,

I was able to get some much needed sleep last night and I am truly grateful for it. I just poured a large mug of Door County Mistletoe Mocha coffee and now it is time to write.

" He who has not Christmas in his heart will never find it under a tree." I recall a Christmas that found me in a dark mood, with much despair and no matter what anyone did for me, I could not get into Christmas. What was missing for me was a relationship with Christ. In July of the next year I found my way to God through Jesus. The year before, no present, no tree, no special food, family or friends could fill Christmas with what I needed.

I thought I was defeated in life. And just when I thought that to be the truth, Jesus stepped in and made a difference. I needed to be in sight of the cross, what it stood for and to love the One who died for me.  You can't find that under a tree. But if you seek God you will find Him.

Amos 5:4 This is what the Lord says to you. Seek me and live.

Surrender your heart and experience a real Christmas day.

In keeping with my promise to share some photos of how my wife decorates for Christmas, I have another one for you.

Even the kitchen light gets decorated with old spoons.

God bless.

A Gentle Reminder 12/13/21

 Good Morning,

Monday arrived and it started before I was ready. The Door County Gingerbread Spice Latte is finished brewing and now it is time to write.

As usual, I get things out of order sometimes and in keeping with the Christmas theme for the month I have attached another photo of the decorations my wife Rene has placed in our home to make it the "Christmas House".

John 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of Him who sent me.

To be honest, this photo should have been the first one in the line of 25. Our nativity set is always the first item to be displayed every year. It was given to us by friends for our wedding a 1000 years ago. It has held up pretty well, although we found out that our 1st Springer Spaniel wasn't a sheep dog. One of the sheep figurines suffered an early death. I guess puppies will chew things now and then.

Jesus should always come first in all that we do year round. Not to have displayed the "Christmas Story" first was a real mistake on my part.

When I see the baby in the manger, I can't help but remember that Jesus left heaven to come to Earth and go to a cross for us.

So today, I humbly bow my head and vow to make sure if I ever do this again, and post pictures of our decorations, the first one will be our nativity set. Jesus always needs to come first.

If It Weren't For Old Spice? 12/12/2021

 Good Morning,

I sat down this morning with a cup of Door County Christmas Coffee and as their advertisement says "It's Christmas In A Cup". The old coffee is going down very well and my feet are resting on a warm floor, so it's time to write.

1 Corinthians16:13 Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.

Today I want to talk about what I consider to be the "Good Old Days" of Christmas past. When I was a young boy and quite a few years away from shaving any chin hair, my Dad would take a little of his aftershave and rub some on my face and say "now you smell like a man". For years and years, my Dad and my grandfather used "Old Spice" aftershave. Every Christmas  someone in the family would gift them a bottle which would last until Christmas the next year. I believe my grandmother and mother were the biggest purchasers of the annual Old Spice. I have a hunch that if it weren't for Old Spice I might not be here. Oops this blog cannot be R rated.  When those two were in the room first thing in the morning after shaving, you just knew they were there from the distinct smell of their aftershave. These two were no sissies. They hunted, fished, worked hard and said exactly what was on their minds.

I was always waiting for that first whisker to appear on my chin so I could shave and douse myself with my first bottle of Old Spice Aftershave.  It finally happened and one morning my dad handed me a new razor and a bottle of the Opposite Sex attractor and said, "have at it boy". Well after nearly needing stitches and being covered in white tissue dots spattered with blood, I applied the aftershave. Oh my oh my! Did that application of aftershave to that butchered skin sting and hurt. I didn't yell, or scream I sucked it up and suffered in silence.  My dad asked me how that felt? He knew that I didn't expect to be tortured by my aftershave. He said. "smelling good for the ladies might be painful, but worth it." I began to consider becoming a monk, with a long beard for awhile. I have the beard, but still need to shave around my neck every day to keep it looking orderly. I apply that same aftershave and it still stings a little.

What is my point today? Ladies, don't forget to gift your men with some aftershave, and don't buy that stull that smells like women's perfume. Men need to smell like men. Guys, it is also important to be neat and clean for the ladies. On Christmas day, those old boys were up with the kids, and shortly after that, they were clean shaven , dressed in slacks and their best Pendelton  wool shirts, and smelling great. So guys, set the trend and dress up a little on Christmas day and be prepared to carve the ham.

That's how I remember Christmas day.  Men you still have time to get some Old Spice , but don't be surprised if there is another mouth to feed next year at the Christmas table.

In keeping my promise to attach a new photo each day of an item that helps to turn our home into the "Christmas House" here it is. This is an old antique sled that we fitted with glass to create a table to hold decorations.

God bless.

Issues On Top Of Issues 12/11/21

 Good Morning,

I have a hot cup of Door County Jingle Bell Java next to me and two Springer Spaniels at my feet.

I have been watching the news from my city, surrounding cities, my country and from around the world. We could rename Earth and just plain call it CALAMITY. Topping the list is a virus that seems to be smarter than all of the science on this newly named planet called Calamity. Two countries are just minutes away from all out war. Supply chains are holding Barbie hostage on ships as well as a part for my car. You can order a vehicle and they can't tell you when you will receive it. You might be better off with a horse and buggy, than a vehicle, because fuel prices are holding you hostage in your own city. You don't need to watch boxing anymore, just take a flight and wait for a good fight to break out. The weather is quite ferocious and a home owner needs to have policies, for floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, drought, and oodles more. I won't even mention politics, and all the antics that go with that subject.

Jeremiah 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you seek me with all your heart.

Yet, "Calamity" is still spinning every day and the sun rises and sets  each day. Where am I going with this? Well just take a look at the sunset and sunrise. In the event that takes place every day we see God's glory. Yet in many instances the calamity we see each day is man made. Murder, mayhem, thievery, drug addictions, brutal crimes against one another are all part of a lawless society that does not fear God even though we can see His glory on display. Can calamity cause the sun to rise, the tides to recede, an apple to grow or snow to fall? No it can't. But yet this world is ignoring God's presence. Mind you, not everyone is this foolish to ignore God, but are we?

There is not enough love, fear and respect for God on this planet Calamity. Friends, draw closer to God and start today. Try to make a change in your part of the world and maybe some love, joy, and peace will spread like a virus around the world. Give yourself a Christmas Present by growing closer to God and point others to Him.

As promised, earlier this month I am posting another photo of our "Christmas House". My wife likes to celebrate Christmas even while showering. She is a little stuck on Snowmen".

God Bless,

Marty

Worship. Prepares Your Heart For Christmas.

 Good Morning,

Friday arrived and I for one am happy to be working today. I will have a road mug of Door County White Christmas Coffee to drink while driving. The radio will be playing some old Christmas tunes and I will have a prayer in my heart.

Psalm 71:8 My mouth is filled with your praise, and with your glory all the day.

This is the last day I will be writing about preparing your heart for Christmas. This step is number ten in the process. I have to admit it. This one is the step that hit my heart and blasted me between the eyes. I find that since sharing these steps I have had to work harder in preparing my heart to be right for Christmas. The old devil is working overtime to knock me down.

10. Worship. Christmas is the perfect opportunity for worship. True worshiping of God encompasses so much more than simply singing. Worship is a way of life. This Christmas, seek to honor Him with the way you live. Speak words to others that breathe life, not discouragement. Love the people in your life selflessly. Humbly serve your family. Praise God with the little moments in your daily life.

This one should be easy to do. I am sure living a life of worshipping God in all things and at all times is the best thing to do. In doing so, much prayer is involved. I will end this blog today with a prayer.

Lord, I am weak and every time I seek a life of praise and worship I either do something to ruin it or something occurs to knock me down. I pray for strength to be what you want and intended me to be. Let there be some hope and peace seen in all I do. Amen

As I promised, I will continue to post a photo each day until Christmas of some of the things my wife has decorated our "Christmas House" with. She sure has a collection. Featured today is the "Kitchen Clock" which plays a different Christmas Carol on the hour. When it is daylight or when the lights are on it chimes a beautiful tune. However at night, it still plays a tune on the hour, but with dimmed lights the volume is less. Quite the clock!

Have a great day.

Specific Prayer In December 12/9/2021

 Good Morning,

Thursday it is, and today's mug was filled with Door County White Christmas Coffee and  hope for tomorrow.

9.Prayer.  The 9th. way that I am preparing my heart for Christmas is to specifically pray for the month of December and to concentrate my prayer on these few items. I will be praying for the lost and the hurting. I will lift up in prayer those who have walked away from God or never really knew Him. I am going to ask God to show me those who need some extra love at Christmas, or are in need of things that we can supply. I will pray for those who are alone and need a friend. I will ask God to show us how to help and reach out to them.

1 Timothy 2:1 First of all, then, I urge prayer, supplications, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people.

In keeping with my promise to add a photo every day of one of the Christmas decorations my wife has placed within the Christmas House, here is another one.  We have an antique rocking chair that is usually empty. But not at Christmas, It becomes a seat for a lost snowman,

I love my life.

Read 12/8/2021

 Good Morning,

There are two days packed into one on this Wednesday. I grab my Door County Candy Cane Coffee to go and get this day in the books with some gusto.

In preparing my heart for Christmas I choose to read a little more this month. This is the 8th step with two more to go.

8. Read. Study the story of Christ's birth. Instead of rushing through the reading of Matthew 1 or Luke 2, take time to meditate on the words. Read the passages slowly, taking note of the details you might have missed before. Ask the Lord to help you notice new things as you read the story with fresh eyes.

I just finished a study where I looked up all of the Old testament Prophecies regarding the birth of Jesus. I was able to match the prophesy with the New Testament fulfillment of the prophesy. That was an amazing study. I am always happy to read the "Christmas Story".

As promised I have another photo of the Christmas House we call home. This is one section of our kitchen cabinets. The two other sections are decorated the same way.

Have a blessed day.

Enjoying December. 12/7/2021

 Good Morning,

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas in this house. The aroma of the Door County Cady Cane Coffee is calling me to another cup for the road.

This morning I would like to remember December 7th 1941. The attack on Pearl Harbor happened 80 years ago. Those who survived the attack are less and less every year. My prayers are with them.

As I prepare my heart to celebrate Christmas I have committed to enjoying the whole month of December. I knew the minute I said those words. I might have opened myself to an attack from the devil, who would want to send some mayhem my way. I am praying for a wonderful month and happy days.

7. Enjoy. Christmas is a beautiful season- sparkling Christmas lights, Decorations hung with care memorable moments with family. Appreciate the little things and moments with family. Slow down and enjoy all the month has to offer.  Enjoy the beauty all around.

I for one am enjoying all the work my wife is putting into this house. Even the creepy snow men peering at me in the dark.

Have a great day.

Time To Remember. 12/6/2021

 Good Morning,

A little Door County Mistletoe Mocha will go a long way this morning in warming me up and helping me accelerate my body. Monday it is and I will embrace it with gusto.

As I take time to share the steps I am taking to prepare myself for Christmas I can't help but to  remember.

6. Remember. Reflect on the fact that our Savior was born specifically so that He would one day die for our sins. Thank Him for His willingness to enter this messy, broken, hopeless world. Rejoice in the Father’s love, reflecting on the reality that He sent His only Son to pay the price for sin—our sin. Remember what He went through on the cross to save us. Also take time to remember the blessings of Christmas past. If you were able to eat a ham dinner with family and had your favorite aunt sit with the children at the kids table, you were blessed and should take time to remember it.

To think that God's plan to save us from our sins started with a baby is just mind boggling. Jesus left the glory of heaven to go to the womb and then eventually the tomb. It's why we gather and eat that ham or turkey or better yet lasagna in celebration!  That baby freed us from the wrath and rightful punishment's of God.

Matthew 1:23 "Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel , which means God with us".

To gather with friends and relatives is always nice, but in the back of my mind I will be thanking that baby and then man for being a God who loves me.

As promised I have another photo for you to see. Our Christmas decorating is 95% complete. My wife is on a mission to make this a great Christmas!

Really Listen 12/5/2021

 Good Morning,

I found my way to my desk after a long night without sleep and it is a pleasure to be sipping on a hot cup of Door County Spicy Nutcracker Coffee. Where that sleepless night came from, I will never know. A pot of potato soup is in the crockpot simmering. So something good at least came from the sleepless night.

Today as I prepare my heart for Christmas I want to devote some time to talk about listening to others when they speak. We need to all concentrate on listening. This is harder to do, especially with our close loved ones, especially spouses. After being married for 1000 years like us, we believe that we can actually finish a sentence for our dear husband or wife. We chalk it up to being together for so long, a closeness of love. my friends, that is a pile of horse poop. We actually are being rude when we do that. We are basically shutting them down mid sentence, even if it is in our minds and we claim to know just what they are going to say.

My wife is not a person of a lot of words. The other day I asked her how she was doing. She has recently lost a brother and the funeral is coming up. Her mom has been ill and I know that is on her mind. But what I really expected her to say and had already set my mind to what I thought her response would be, was a total surprise. I thought she would say "OK" but instead she really wanted to talk for awhile and share her feelings. My mind had already programed itself to an OK answer and I was really ready to move on to my next project. Instead I sat down and listened. Here fears and concerns were some things I would never have anticipated. Her feelings were different than what I thought they would be. I had to check my rudeness and really sit and listen.

5. Listen. Practice the art of truly listening to others as you gather with family and friends. Whether you’re having dinner, opening presents, or sitting around and catching up with those you haven’t seen in a while, pay attention to what is said instead of thinking about how you will respond. Truly listening is one of the best ways to show your loved ones that you care.

Proverbs 18:13 If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.

Give the gift of listening. You might find that life is better and more interesting. Drop the rudeness.

As promised I have added a photo on one more Christmas decoration that my wife does annually.

This is a photo of her Christmas Village that I really think she would like to keep up all year round,

Many more photos to come!

Celebrate 12/4/2021

 Good Morning,

Today is an early day for me and I will be duck hunting very soon. I am grateful for a hot cup of Door County White Christmas Coffee and the fact that I can get one more day of duck season in.

As I prepare my heart for Christmas I am looking each day for ways to celebrate. I choose to celebrate the gift that never ends. It is the gift of eternal life through the birth, death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It all started on Christmas over 2000 years ago, in a small city named Bethlehem. This gift is something to be cherished on a daily basis. For me, I need to make this a focus as I prepare my heart to make this Christmas meaningful to myself and those around me.

4. Celebrate. Jesus, the One who holds all things together, chose to enter the world in the humblest form—a small, helpless baby. Jesus’ birth is the greatest gift we will ever receive and that is definitely a reason to celebrate! Embrace the joy found in the birth of Immanuel—God with us.

Matthew 2:11 and going into the house, they saw the child with Mary His mother, and they fell down and worshipped Him. Then opening their treasures, they offered Him gifts, gold frankincense and myrrh.

It is never too late to join this celebration. It takes commitment and a heart that desires a Savior.

I say "go for it"

As I promised, here is another photo of the place we call home. The Rene House Of Christmas.

Have a great day.

Christmas Music 12/3/2021

 Good Morning,

I stepped outside this morning and was surprised by some white stuff falling from the sky. Some snowflakes were landing on my head, but nothing was accumulating on the ground. It's a little too warm for the snow to stay. I retreated inside and grabbed a hot cup of Door County White Christmas Coffee.

Psalm 100:1-2 His steadfast love endures forever. 2 Make a joyful noise to the Lord. Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into His presence with singing!

One of the steps I take to prepare my heart for Christmas is to tune in my car radio to stations that are playing Christmas music. I find that the music brings back memories of old and stirs my heart to remember that Christmas is really all about Jesus. I am particularly fond of the songs Holy Night, and Silent night. I enjoy the secular songs to and can remember singing "all I want for Christmas is my two front teeth".  I still get a chuckle from the songs recorded by Alvin And The Chipmunks .

3. Sing. This may seem a little silly at first, but spend time singing your favorite Christmas songs aloud. Pay close attention to the words, thanking God for His incredible gift of our Savior. Sing these traditional carols as worship songs to the Lord.

The home decorating has slowed down in the last two days, but will resume whole heartedly tomorrow and Sunday. But, a few things made it to the Christmas Holly Jolly Home in the last couple of days. Here is another small example of the efforts of my wife Rene to make Christmas nice for us.

The pie safe was decorated the other day as well as the rest of the kitchen. More pictures to come daily.

Have a wonderful day and enjoy it, because tomorrow it will be history.

Gather Together 12/2/2021

 Good Morning,

Day two of December was greeted with a hot cup of Door County Mistletoe Mocha and a smile.

I promised that for the whole month I would take a picture of some more of the Christmas and winter decorations my wife Rene is decorating our home from head to toe with. Today's photo is of a taxidermied duck I shot.

I love my life! A duck with mittens.

Luke 12:34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

As I prepare for Christmas day and get my heart into the Christmas Spirit I am definitely changing my ideas on "get togethers." Some are just not as important as others and should be chosen wisely.

2. Gather. Spend uninterrupted time with the people you love. If necessary, limit the activities and parties you commit to so that you can focus on time with your family instead. We often rush through our busy Christmas schedules and miss time to really be present in the moments we are together with our loved ones. Make memories together as you celebrate Christmas.

This is no doubt some great advice and one I need to follow. I can get too busy and end up neglecting those I love. Last night I had a long talk with a relative of mine that was just way overdue. I left the conversation with feelings of love and accomplishment. That call was not rushed and I enjoyed every minute of it.

So heed this advice Gather with those you love and do not let things pull you away. Your quality time spent, will show them that they are important to you and loved.

God bless,

Marty

First Day Of December 12/1/2021

 Good Morning,

My day began with a very hot cup of Door County Jingle Bell Java and some Cheerios for Breakfast.

Our house is being transformed into a Christmas wonderland. I can't take any credit for the transformation. My wife has been busy working on this project for several days now. Piece by piece, room by room she has been decorating like an elf on steroids. She has even gotten so bold as to add a Christmas flare to my turf.  My desk now has Christmas nick nacks!!!!

I will take a picture each day of something added to our home just so you get the idea. This first few days of December I want to take time to reflect and set my heart straight for Christmas.

Reflect. Take note of the many reasons you have to be thankful this Christmas. Spend time thanking God specifically for ways He has provided for you—spiritually, relationally, financially, etc. Praise Him for His goodness, grace, and faithfulness in all seasons of life.

Romans12:1-2 I appeal to you therefore, brothers,[a] by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.[b] Do not be conformed to this world,[c] but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Reflecting will be my first step in securing the right heart for Christmas.

It Ain't Easy 11/30/2021

 Good Morning,

I hear the familiar sound of Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee brewing in the kitchen. I am thinking that I should move the coffee maker next to the desk for convenience.

The picture below is one of the many antiques that grace our kitchen. It is an old flour sifter and combination measuring cup.

The device is used to measure flour and sift it finely, thus avoiding lumpiness in the dough. The sifter is cranked and forces the flour through a screen and into a bowl. That flour is more than strained.

Luke 22:31-32New King James Version (NKJV)
31 And the Lord said,“Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

We see in the Scripture above that Jesus is telling Peter that Satan has asked to sift him like wheat. What does that mean for Peter? What does that mean for us today?  John Piper writes

"What does Satan aim to do? What does "sifting like wheat" refer to in real life? The best clue comes in the next sentence where Jesus says, "But I prayed for you that your faith fail not." Satan aims to sift Simon and the others like wheat. Jesus aims to keep Simon's faith from failing. So probably "sifting like wheat" means doing something to make the disciples' faith fail.
We can imagine a picture like this: Satan has a big sieve with jagged-edged wires forming a mesh with holes shaped like faithless men and women. What he aims to do is throw people into this sieve and shake them around over these jagged edges until they are so torn and weak and desperate that they let go of their faith and fall through the sieve as faithless people, right into Satan's company. Faith cannot fall through the mesh. It's the wrong shape. And so as long as the disciples hold to their faith, trusting the power and goodness of God for their hope, then they will not fall through the mesh into Satan's hands.
Therefore the sifting of Simon Peter and the others is Satan's effort to destroy their faith. And this remains Satan's main goal today. It is relatively unimportant to Satan whether we are healthy or sick, rich or poor; what he wants is to sift out our faith. If he can do it by suffering, he will try that; if he can do it by wealth, he will try that. Peter learned a good lesson that night. Some 30 years later he wrote in 1 Peter 5:8, 9: "Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Resist him firm in your faith." Jesus pictured Satan as a farmer shaking Christians in his sieve, trying to tear them apart from their faith. Peter pictures Satan as a lion who can devour anything but faith. The only person that can fit through Satan's sieve is an unbeliever. The only thing that will fit down the lion's throat is an unbeliever. This is the victory that overcomes Satan's sieve and Satan's throat, our faith (1 John 5:4). If we hold it fast to the end, Satan cannot destroy us. That's why John writes to the church of Smyrna in Revelation 2:10: "
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life.
Yes, God does allow us to be sifted, but if we hold steadfast in our faith, our faith grows stronger.  When our faith grows stronger, those who were once weak now become the encourager. Peter was used through his sifting to encourage us through his writing.  There is purpose behind the sifting.

So if today you need encouragement because your faith is being tested, look up to the Author and Finisher of your faith. As in Peter's case, Jesus is interceding for you with prayer.

Hang in there.
