The Soil Of Love 2/28/2015

Good Morning,

This has been a busy morning already. The coffee is done and the new flavor for me to try today is Door County Chocolate Caramel Truffle. The jury is out on this one. Maybe I will be able to decide after the second cup if this one will make it back into the cupboard again. A pot of cheddar broccoli soup is simmering slowly in the kitchen. Supper will be grand tonight.

1 John 4:18New King James Version (NKJV)
18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

As I gaze out the window of my den I still see piles of snow covering our vegetable garden. The soil has produced many vegetables throughout the years. Certainly nothing is growing there right now, but the potential is there, after it warms up and the soil is tilled and seeds are planted.

Love is a lot like soil it needs to be warmed, tilled and planted in order to produce good fruit. The prefect unconditional love of Jesus Christ ; Romans 5:8New King James Version (NKJV)
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. is perfect love. We often miss out or are unable to love other people out of fear. The love that Jesus has for us is sacrificial love. He took away the fear of eternal death for those who are saved in Him. That is the ultimate fear for all. So what is there left to fear? Why do we find it impossible to love others?

Well maybe they have betrayed you. Haven't you betrayed Jesus at one time or another? Jesus still loves you. Can't we forgive and choose love?

Maybe some how they hurt you. Haven't you hurt the Son of God with your sins? Jesus still loves you. Can't we forgive and choose love?

Perfect love has no fear. Like soil it needs to be tilled. You have to try love and stick with it in order for it to produce fruit. If I just stare at my garden all summer and wait for tomatoes to grow I might get one plant from a wild seed left over from last year, but that is highly doubtful. Even if it does grow it will be choked by weeds if I don't protect it and nurture the soil.

"Whatever a person may be like, we must still love them because we love God." ( John Calvin)

We often miss out on healing an emotional wound or finding a new friend out of fear. The fear of being hurt again, or the fear of being rejected can and does paralyze our hearts from experiencing the prefect love that Jesus so much wants us to have for others.

You and I need love each day. Jesus loves you but wants you to love perfectly which might be hard for you to do. But that sacrificial perfect love is a step toward removing the fear of risking your heart in love. Go for it. No where in the Bible do I find that Jesus ever regretted loving us.

God bless,

Treasures That Last Forever 2/27/2015

Good Morning,

Friday at last has arrived. As I leave the house my mug is filled with Door County German Chocolate Cake Coffee. I will be trying a new flavor tomorrow. Sometimes you just have to shake up your Saturday.

Matthew 6:19-21King James Version (KJV)
19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:
20 But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal:
21 For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

Last night we had a leadership meeting for this summer's church mission trip. I will be writing about more of the details later this year. As I was driving to the meeting destination memories of all the previous trips I have led or participated in flooded my mind. There are so many great God experiences and wonderful memories of people, places and miracles to remember. During most of those trips I was able to take some photos or bring home a souvenir. As I write this I can look up on the top shelf of my desk and see framed pictures of a few of the trips. A rain stick from Peru sits to my right. I hope it never happens, but if a fire would occur in our home or a tornado struck I would probably lose all of those things. But no one can rob me of the memories or the people I will meet in heaven some day that I met one time in a foreign country and Jesus rocked their world with His love. Those are heavenly treasures that I cannot lose.

Corrie ten Boom said "I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God's hands, that I still possess."

When was the last time that you laid up for yourself a heavenly treasure? What holds you back from service that just might rock the world with Jesus? What is your excuse? It's never too late to get started.

God bless,
Marty

Temptation Coming Through The Door 2/26/2105

Good Morning,

The cup sitting next to me, steaming away is filled with Door County Pumpkin Spice Coffee. My lunch is packed and I am off to work in a few minutes. Gibbs is telling me how much he loves me by wagging his tail. Nice way to wake up.

Philippians 1:9-11New King James Version (NKJV)
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

It has been said that "temptation usually comes through a door that has been deliberately left open."  There is another old saying, "The devil makes work for idle hands". Spiritually you are most at risk and vulnerable when you have little or nothing to do.  The Christians at Philippi were reminded of this by Paul as he made use of their willingness to be his partners in sharing the Gospel. Paul was in prison as he wrote this but reminded them of what was truly important. Stay busy for the Lord. Idle time is dangerous. We can take Paul's advice and apply it still today. If you forge ahead and continue to help others, lead in prayer, participate in the building of the Kingdom, you have very little time for sinful things. You won't be moaning or complaining. There isn't time for that when you are occupied with good deeds. In other words, "use your time wisely lest you fall."

God bless your day. Chin up, pray up and don't give up.

Conversion Experience 2/25/2015

Good Morning,

What would you do if you had the day off from all of your responsibilities today? I would still start my day with a big cup of Door County Carmel Apple Coffee. From there, I am not really sure what I would do with my time. Maybe I would finish a book that would take an hour or two.

Joshua 24:21-23New International Version (NIV)
21 But the people said to Joshua, “No! We will serve the Lord.”
22 Then Joshua said, “You are witnesses against yourselves that you have chosen to serve the Lord.”
“Yes, we are witnesses,” they replied.
23 “Now then,” said Joshua, “throw away the foreign gods that are among you and yield your hearts to the Lord, the God of Israel.”

My conversion experience is a special occasion in my life. July 7th 1981 is a night I will never forget. For me it was quiet reassurance and an indescribable peace that later turned into an emotional ecstasy. There is no doubt that on that night Jesus was given my heart and life. In that holy mystical moment it was the natural thing to do to devote myself to God, as it is with many.

For quite some time I experienced what I called the "Saved By Jesus Honeymoon Period" I couldn't put down my Bible, couldn't miss church, praying wasn't an option, it was life. In the midst of my great joy, I started to get more involved in serving at church. It was at these times that uncertainty and doubt started to creep in from time to time. I couldn't believe that there were times that I didn't agree with other believers at church. From time to time I would experience periods of disillusionment and disappointment. My faith was tested in many ways and I experienced hurt. This still happens but much less now.

One day while reading my Bible and praying I learned that all these tough times form part of the Devil's armory that will bombard Christians in hope that their faith will weaken and their testimonies for God will lose power. Serving the Lord in the local church was, and is the right track.

To fight and resist these times, cling to the promise of Jesus that His grace is sufficient for us. Discipline yourself to look to Jesus in all matters, all the time and to trust Him. He will lead you away from temptation  and always to the path of dedication and service to God, who you surrendered your life to. I was no threat to Satan just reading and praying. Once I got involved??? Well I now was a threat to the evil side.

So do not be discouraged. Once you step up, be prepared for the after effects. But know this. You are on the right course!

Charles Spurgeon wrote "Trust Jesus and you are saved. Trust self and you are lost".

Have a great day.

Rejoicing With Friends 2/24/2015

Good Morning,

How great is our God! Sing with me. How great is our God! Today I am still in the mood to drink a celebratory cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee. I wish I could serve the world a cup of it and we could all just enjoy meeting one another. I guess I dream big?

Romans 12:15 New King James Version (NKJV)
15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.

The last couple of days has allowed us to actually live out Romans 12:15. Some dear friends of ours could not find their teenage daughter. She was missing and they had no idea where she was. Many people rose to the cause in prayer and tears while the parents, and siblings were distraught with fear. We really don't need to talk about the particulars, we will leave that up to them. But I saw social media that usually is filled with dribble come alive with Scripture, prayer and true concern. Pictures were posted along with pleas for assistance. I saw the best in humanity. Despite the ugliness of this world, I saw the good in a bad situation.

I am happy to say that their lovely daughter was returned yesterday to her home in one piece. I was blessed to be there last night for a few minutes to celebrate her return. Nothing says welcome home like some submarine sandwiches and chips. Sunday I saw God at work through those who love Him.   They worked and wept. Last night I knew He was present, celebrating with those tired parents and siblings. I am proud to know many of the people who exercised their praying knees and offered help.

God is good and He has one great family.

God bless,
Marty

Facing The Day 2/23/2015

Good Morning,

I hope your Monday is peaceful and filled with blessings. My mug is filled with Door County Cherry Crème Coffee. I rested a little this weekend and kept a slow pace throughout. So Monday came and I am ready.

Each day for all of us has it moments of challenge. For some, the severity of the challenges are much higher than for others. Sometimes it might feel that we are alone.

But we can be there for one another with prayer support and practical support. Many self titled "prayer warriors" are willing to pray and I agree that the world needs more people who pray. But give me a warrior who not only talks the battle, give me one that walks through the battle with me.

This is where today's churches step up and show the love of Jesus Christ in not only prayer but action. It is through the church that our Great God will often show Himself through the actions of others. It is their love for Him that compels people to serve others. God is at work 24/7 and needs no help. But it is His choice to ask us to join Him in His work. God shows His love for all through the extended hand of the church.

Matthew 25:35-40New King James Version (NKJV)
35 for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in; 36 I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and give You drink? 38 When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothe You? 39 Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ 40 And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me.’

Hey! Step up. God wants to use you.

Taken For Granted 2/22/2015

Good Morning,

I can smell the Door County Red Velvet Coffee perking in the kitchen as I write today. I forgot to set the coffee maker last night on automatic for 4:00 AM. So I must wait just a little bit for may daily cup of java. Arrrrrgh!

2 Samuel 2:6 May the LORD now show you kindness and faithfulness, and I too will show you the same favor because you have done this. (NIV)

It is said that " a mind is a terrible thing to waste". I don't think that I have wasted mine. But I do believe that I have used it beyond what it was built for. I've never solved a world problem or cured a disease with this pea brain of mine. But I do believe there are signs that it is worn out. From time to time I try to think and nothing happens. I hope I am the only one that suffers from stooge mania.

It's time to count our blessings today. Did you know that I have not had to iron a shirt since 1986? Our home has never run out of toilet paper since 1986 and we have enough stockpiled for at least two years. I know our home gets dusted and the windows cleaned, but since 1986 I can't even tell you where the dust equipment is.

We do not possess a toilet paper gremlin, or a shirt fairy. The dust bunnies do not get killed by the dog. My wife is the ironing board surfer.

Now I can identify who does all of that for me and right now she is snoring. Rene on the other hand does not have to cook. I am also grateful for that. One cannot live on peanut butter, popcorn or cheese forever. I am the chef of the house.

I think we all go too often without thanking people who do things for us daily. Maybe it is the one who is your caregiver since you can't live alone anymore? Maybe it is an assistant or co-worker that day in and day out does their job and it goes un-noticed? How about the person who loves you enough to just call and check on you? We take for granted that God assigned them to purchase toilet paper as their calling in life. Really??

So today, let's put the pea brains to a task that is very easy. Let's say thank you to God for providing the blessings we take for granted and let's also thank those blessings. It might make their day. You just never know!!! Someone might just walk up and thank you!

God bless,
Marty

Give The Test 2/21/2015

Good Morning,

I love Saturday mornings. In the fall I am usually into my third hour of hunting by now. But it's February and there isn't much to do today but take care of some chores at a slow pace. So my hot Door County Mocha Mint coffee is next to me and there is wood crackling and blazing in the fireplace. Gibbs, my trusty sidekick is at the ready in case I move. He is parked right on my feet. My wife is up early getting ready for a "girls luncheon" which makes me glad that I am of the gender that does not have lace on our underwear. Guys do early morning breakfasts and eat all the bacon and eggs that our wives don't need to know about. The ladies will order some small little piece of lettuce decorated with bits of unidentifiable seafood and a hint of cucumber and then lie about how good it was. When what they really wanted was a juicy burger with raw onions and fries. Go figure.

Ok here's the message. Last night we attended a sporting event down town. When we left the event and were walking to ransom our car from the parking lot pirates who charge enough to buy groceries for two for a week, a stranger walked up to us. He began to explain that he was down and out and wondered of we could spare a dollar or two so he could eat. My wife started to reach into her purse and pull out a couple of dollars. I stopped her which alarmed her at first. I asked the young man if he would like ten dollars instead. He smiled and said "sure"!!! I pointed to our car which was just in sight and said "great. The windows on that Jeep are a mess. I just happen to have some towels and window wash in the Jeep. If you help me wash them I will give you the money. It should only take us 5 minutes". He finally made eye contact with me and gave me a dirty look and left. Notice I was willing to work side by side. This man was not handicapped, elderly, or sick. He was fully capable of five minutes worth of work.

Within two minutes we were stopped by another man as we entered the Jeep. The same scenario occurred only with a different man. When I offered the same deal to this man, he asked a question. "You are offering me some work"? I said "yes" but that I would work with him. We washed the windows and mirrors and he was smiling the whole time. We shook hands at the end and the pay was given. He turned back to us and said. "I will pray for the both of you. You fed me tonight and tomorrow, but better yet you gave me some work. Thank you."

Hebrews 13:2King James Version (KJV)
Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.

I guess we will never know about this one????

I don't pass up the red bucket bell ringers at Christmas time. I won't let a veteran, handicapped person  or little kids go hungry without trying to help. I know that if you are reading this my friends you are of the same style. But be wise! Offer some work to an able bodied person. See if you get eye contact. Listen for the excuse. The other man continued down the street asking for money and did not receive any. I gave a bag of clean rags to the other man and my spray bottle. When we left the pirate lot he was washing another set of windows.

2 Thessalonians 3 The Message (MSG)

Those Who Are Lazy

1-3 One more thing, friends: Pray for us. Pray that the Master’s Word will simply take off and race through the country to a groundswell of response, just as it did among you. And pray that we’ll be rescued from these scoundrels who are trying to do us in. I’m finding that not all “believers” are believers. But the Master never lets us down. He’ll stick by you and protect you from evil.
4-5 Because of the Master, we have great confidence in you. We know you’re doing everything we told you and will continue doing it. May the Master take you by the hand and lead you along the path of God’s love and Christ’s endurance.
6-9 Our orders—backed up by the Master, Jesus—are to refuse to have anything to do with those among you who are lazy and refuse to work the way we taught you. Don’t permit them to freeload on the rest. We showed you how to pull your weight when we were with you, so get on with it. We didn’t sit around on our hands expecting others to take care of us. In fact, we worked our fingers to the bone, up half the night moonlighting so you wouldn’t be burdened with taking care of us. And it wasn’t because we didn’t have a right to your support; we did. We simply wanted to provide an example of diligence, hoping it would prove contagious.
10-13 Don’t you remember the rule we had when we lived with you? “If you don’t work, you don’t eat.” And now we’re getting reports that a bunch of lazy good-for-nothings are taking advantage of you. This must not be tolerated. We command them to get to work immediately—no excuses, no arguments—and earn their own keep. Friends, don’t slack off in doing your duty.
14-15 If anyone refuses to obey our clear command written in this letter, don’t let him get by with it. Point out such a person and refuse to subsidize his freeloading. Maybe then he’ll think twice. But don’t treat him as an enemy. Sit him down and talk about the problem as someone who cares.

God bless,

Marty

The Lion Sleeps Tonight 2/20/2015

Good Morning.

Yesterday I celebrated another year of life. It was a very nice day and I was blessed to hear from many friends and family. This morning my coffee pot is gurgling forth with Door County Highlander Grog. That brew will soon be filling my travel cup as I leave home and head to work.

Psalm 127 New King James Version (NKJV)
127 Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.

The weather has been pretty cold in this part of the country. So last night I built a nice fire and watched as our dog Gibbs backed up and rested next to the blaze. Not too long into his rest I could see that he was sound asleep. I wanted to warm up myself so I grabbed a small pillow and joined Gibbs in front of the fire. It wasn't long at all before I dozed off. Maybe an hour later I heard Rene talking to herself and she was laughing. In my dazed state I heard her say, "Look at the two mighty hunters. I guess the Lion sleeps tonight." She padded off enjoying her home grown version of the movie the Lion King. As I woke up from a nice nap and thought about the fire, the dog, my wife and life in general I could not help but be content. For an hour there wasn't any work to do. For an hour there wasn't a bill to pay. For an hour there wasn't any cold weather. For an hour, my small aches and pains were gone. For an hour I was blessed to be at rest. Rest and sleep come from God and I knew last night that I would never again take it for granted. Our sleep is a gift from God.

So when you are tired and need to rest, know that God is calling you to take care of yourself. He loves you so much that He wants you to rest.

God bless,

Marty

Others First??? Part Four 2/19/2015

Good Morning,

Today I felt like making a special cup of coffee for myself. The steaming brew is Door County Cherry Crème. That flavor is like an old friend to me.

Recently Rene was able to purchase an antique biscuit cutter on one of her shopping adventures. Needless to say. "I like biscuits".

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”  Galatians 6:22,23

Practice Empathy,
We gave been working all week on developing attitudes that would help us to put others first. I really do like biscuits. Rene knows that. She can bake a mean biscuit. Add a little sausage gravy and I am a happy camper. From time to time things can become overwhelming. Rene will bake some biscuits and say, maybe these will help". She doesn't always try to understand what it is that I am working on or has me perplexed. She knows that she too has those days and can identify with a plate that is too full of troubles or concerns. So she helps soothe the troubles of the day with a biscuit. She doesn't tell me how to respond or act. She has been in my shoes.
Consider the needs of those around you. Try to put yourself in their situation and treat them as you would like to be treated. We call this the Golden Rule and it is found in Matthew 7:12, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.”
We often talk about putting ourselves in someone else’s shoes. That is a good way to think of empathy. When you are having trouble getting along with, or helping someone else, try to picture yourself in the same condition or position they are in. How would you like people to treat you? Treat them the same way and you will become more empathetic to the needs of others. Rene does this. She knows how she would want to be treated. (Peanut Butter Cookies)

Now let's take what we learned the last few days and put it to practice.

God bless,
Marty

Others First??? Part Three 2/18/2015

Good Morning,

The day is starting with some very frigid air today. I am already looking forward to coming home tonight and sitting in front of a warm fire. My travel mug is filled with Door County White Christmas Coffee. I will enjoy this one right to the last drop.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”  Galatians 6:22,23

We have been looking at the attitudes that need to be developed and cultivated in order for us to be successful at "putting others first.

Not Everyone Is The Same. We Think Differently

The picture above is an antique whipping bowl that may have been used for whipping small amounts of cream before serving it with coffee. Rene purchased this on our last shopping excursion for antiques. She thinks that spending the day looking at old things and maybe purchasing one or forty items is a great time. She actually likes for me to come along. She calls it "quality time together".

I on the other hand would prefer to be in a swamp waiting in the rain for some ducks to approach my decoys and my shot gun going firing. Then watching the dog retrieve my supper. Now Rene has tried this and she does look kind of hot in waders but duck hunting is not her cup of tea.

Now in order for her to put me first in her life she rarely asks me to attend much of anything during duck season. Now for me to put her first, I surrender myself to drive her to antique shops. I actually watch for them now and tell her when I found a new one. I know that some day I will drive Miss Rene to it and spend the day eating ice cream and talking antiques.

You see, we both have different ideas as to what is a good time. One of the reasons we find it hard to put others before ourselves is that different people think differently than we do. If my family thought exactly the same way I did then we might have fewer problems, but life would sure be boring. We like the diversity of thought that different people bring to a group. However, it can also be the source of friction. Try to learn see things from their perspective. Walk a mile in their shoes.
Don’t try to force everyone into your way of thinking. That is a sign that you are thinking more of yourself than you are of them. This would not be fulfilling the Fruits Of The Spirit in Galatians 6:22-23.

God bless,

Marty

Others First? Part Two 2/17/2015

Good Morning,

An English muffin for breakfast, two oranges packed for lunch and a Thermos bottle filled with Door County German Chocolate Cake Coffee and I am out the door soon. Blessed to be headed to a job I like.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” ~ Galatians 6:22,23
Today is the second part of a week long devotional dedicated to putting others first. In order to put others first we need to adopt certain attitudes. Yesterday we looked at compassion. Today we will look at serving others.

Cultivate a Servant's Heart
Find ways to serve others. This is the best way to cultivate or develop a servant’s heart. Putting others before yourself is easier when you are serving them. But just because someone is in a serving position does not mean that they are serving with the correct attitude. Maybe you have met the people who are involved in the service industry who don’t enjoy serving others.  Even people in compassionate sounding jobs (working at a homeless shelter or working as a nurse for example) can have the wrong attitude about the people they are serving. Husbands and dads, serving your family does not show weakness. It shows love and strength.
Develop a servant’s heart and attitude. This is the work of the Holy Spirit. You have to yield to Him so that He can work in your life. A servant's heart is found in the Scripture above. Galatians 6:22-23

Jesus is the perfect example of having a servant's heart.

Matthew 20:26-28

26 It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 27 and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, 28 even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Have a day filled with love. Put someone else first today. More on this subject tomorrow.

Others First??? 2/16/2015

Good Morning,

Monday arrived just in time to remind me that the weekend is over. So I look forward to this week and hopefully learning a couple things about Noah and his ark. My coffee that is steaming away is Door County Caramel Apple.

Last Saturday I mentioned that "putting others first" is something we would dive into a little deeper. Let's take a look at that subject.

Putting others before ourselves is not normal, natural, nor comfortable. Yet, as Christians, we believe we are given a new nature at salvation. We are a new creation. Part of this nature is shown to us in Galatians 6:22 and 23. The fruit of the Spirit is really about putting others first.
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.” ~ Galatians 6:22,23
We will look at some advice this week on how to put others first, Step one is to check your attitude.

Do you have an attitude of compassion?

Show and Practice Compassion.

One of the many attributes that characterizes Jesus is His compassion. Of course He was God, but He was also a man who wanted to serve others because of His love for them. Jesus Christ is our perfect example.
We can ask the Lord to develop compassion in our lives. He said to His followers that those who are truly His disciples will show love to one another. It is probably easier to love fellow Christians than those who do not know our Father, but the example that Christ gave was of Him loving everyone regardless of their spiritual condition. Sometimes it's hard to even show compassion to believers.

So the question for today is where are you on the compassion meter? More tomorrow. We will look at this subject through tomorrow.

God bless,

Marty

The Deep Freeze 2/15/2015

Good Morning,

As I write to you today, the fireplace is crackling with fresh logs, the dog is curled up in a ball at my feet and my cup is steaming with Door County Chocolate Cherry coffee. If there is one thing this guys knows, it is how to make the best of cold weather. The temperatures are well below zero this morning.

Since I really don't have to go anywhere in the is frigid weather. We attended church last night which is normal for us. An extra blanket was added to the bed and the wife is still curled up beneath the blanket mound. So all in all we always try to make the best of things.

One thing I am going to be sure to do is to warm my heart. The Bible is the word of God and is powerful and life changing. The promises of God start with 2 Timothy 3:16 when God tells us that all Scriptures in the Bible are inspired by God.
This is the beginning of the heart warm up for me. I know when I read my Bible, that it is God speaking to me through His word. On a day like today I tend to read the following verses. They remind me of the many promises of God found within the pages of my Bible. Each one in it's own way always warms my heart.

2 Peter 1:4
And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires.
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
Matthew 11:28-29
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
Isaiah 40:29-31

He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.
But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength.
They will soar high on wings like eagles.
They will run and not grow weary.
They will walk and not faint
Philippians 4:19
And this same God who takes care of me will supply all your needs from his glorious riches, which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.
Romans 8:37-39
No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Proverbs 1:33
But all who listen to me will live in peace,
untroubled by fear of harm.”
John 14:27
“I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.
Romans 10:9
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
Romans 6:23
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.

The promises of God are powerful and awesome to grasp. I pray that these scriptures about God’s promises were helpful to you today.

Valentine Gift 2/14/2015

Good Morning,

There is no doubt in my mind this fine morning that it is cold outside. When our dog goes out and does not have to be whistled at to come in, it's cold. He went out and was back at the door in seconds.
I am drinking a hearty cup of Door County Hawaiian Hazelnut Coffee as a write. The house is plenty warm and the pot of soup is already simmering.

Today many people will exchange a gift or two, to participate in Valentine's Day. I am not gong to write about the day itself, whether it should or should not be observed that's a personal preference for each of us to consider. I for one was at the jewelry store last night. "Every kiss begins with Kay".

One gift that we both learned to give each other many, many years ago on an as needed basis was to communicate with each other in a way that would honor God.

Now every couple will have differences. I wish Rene was perfect but she isn't. Although I like to think that I am perfect she will step up an admit for me that I am not. So over the years our lack of perfection has caused from time to time differences. We will both have an opinion of what is right or wrong. But long ago we decided on a Biblical ground rule. "We will talk it out".

Proverbs 15:1 New King James Version (NKJV)
15 A soft answer turns away wrath,
But a harsh word stirs up anger.

This meant we needed to add some ground rules to the ground rule. When angry with each other, we stop and pray out loud together asking God to show us how to handle the situation. We pray for ourselves. This avoids a prayer that preaches to the other person and becomes a null prayer. We ask for the Holy Spirit to calm our hearts and minds. Notice the prayer happens with each of us in the same room. We also agreed to not practice the "silent treatment tactic". Take Note that the Bible verse above says "a soft answer" it does not say "no answer". The silent treatment just stirs up more anger the same as a harsh word does. This has worked for us as we from time to time struggle through my imperfections and Rene's self proclaimed perfections. We have been married for a 1000 years now and we are looking forward to 1000 more till death do us part.

So if today you are exchanging chocolates and goo goo eye looks at each other how about giving the gift of communication during troubled times and do it with a Biblical approach? This works with spouses, friends, and family too. It just needs to be seen as God's way to communicate during differences. It takes two willing partners. I think it is easiest in a marriage though where two people are committed to putting the other first. But that's a whole different message for tomorrow.

Well enjoy the day.

Life Is a Box Of Chocolates 2/13/2015

Good Morning,

Happy Friday to each and everyone of you. Today's coffee flavor is Door County Mocha Mint. I have settled in my mind that today is going to be cold, leading to colder tomorrow and so the plan is to bring in more firewood, drink hot coffee and make some chili.

1 Peter 1:13-15
Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,

I see many a man walking out of stores this week with a decorative box of chocolates. Tom Hanks in the movie Forest Gump said "Life is like a box of chocolates. You just never know what you are going to get".  These are words that ring true. In a box of assorted chocolates it is hard, almost impossible to tell what type of chocolate and flavor you are getting until you take a bite. By that time it's on to the teeth, passed the tongue, look out stomach here it comes. Some of those assorted chocolates might appeal to you and others might make your face twist in "yuck convulsions". But you pull through and if the truth be known you will dip into the chocolate box again next year hoping that you find the ones you like before the rest of the family does. You are playing "chocolate roulette" with your taste buds. I for one after 58 years have learned to leave the chocolate box lottery for others. I am usually the one making faces and wanting to spit. So I just move on, away from that which does me no good.

In life many people stray away from the yuck of life, but tend to try it just one more time and hope for different results. For instance the alcoholic, might think that one drink won't hurt, until he or she is drinking daily and is out of control. Their life just took a repulsive, convulsive turn for the worst.

Here's the point. You know what is bad for you and could make you squirm and spin out of control. So stay away from it. Why gamble on a different result. The box of chocolates called life sends different things at us each day. By now you know what is good for you and what is bad. Avoid every temptation. Don't put yourself into a position to see just how much you can take.

Have a great day!

Spice For Life 2/12/2015

Good Morning,

Wow, it is cold here and I am not surprised that my choice of coats was the warmest one I own. My coffee this morning is Door County Pumpkin Spice.

I really like to cook and what I enjoy most is food with real flavor. I am one of those collectors of spices. I am very particular about the spices I purchase. As much as I would like to save money and purchase in bulk, I don't. I like to keep my spice supply as fresh as possible. Too much of any spice will just sit there and no matter how hard I try it weakens with time and loses it's flavor.

Last night we had buttered vegetables for supper. The spice blend I used had some saffron in it. The spice blend also needed to be ground. I believe that the grinding of the spices gets to the purest of flavors and should be done as needed. Once all the vegetables were cooked and had finished simmering I noticed the aroma of the dish. I had just returned from the outdoors and my nose was cold and runny. I could really take in that aroma. It was so pleasing. Rene remarked that she noticed the aroma and that it was very enticing. She usually doesn't say too much about any of our meals, but last night she mentioned a couple of times that she was ready to get her plate and please her palette.

Christians are a lot like spices. We represent Jesus and from time to time we get encompassed by the world and it's ideas. Deep inside the Christian still exists, but the sweet aroma just isn't there. The world has polluted what everyone sees. The skin of the world needs to be ground off to get to the real Christian so that the sweet aroma of Jesus can be presented to others.

John 15 New King James Version (NKJV)

The True Vine

15 “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

This can be painful at times, but Jesus is very clear that He expects us to be fruitful and in order to do so the Father continues to address issues in our lives and correct them. He does this that we might be more effective in our daily walk with the Lord.

How does it smell around you today? Flat and stale, or vibrant and alive?

God bless,
Marty

You're Gonna Miss This 2/11/2015

Good Morning World,

The middle of the week has arrived already and it seems like I need more time to catch up on the first two days. I can smell the coffee brewing from my den. The flavor today is Door County Mocha Mint. I haven't had a cup of that one in a long, long, time.

Last night I made it home after an elders meeting at church and it was pretty late. As I sat in the kitchen with some milk and a couple biscuits that Rene baked earlier, my mind wandered in prayer. As I looked out the kitchen window and watched some icy snow pellets fall I could not help but rehash our elders meeting. We spent some time talking about the many ways that God has been blessing our church. Then I got a little depressed. You are probably asking yourself, "God is blessing them and he's depressed?" I am very pleased that God is at work within the church and through the men I sat with last night.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18English Standard Version (ESV)
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

My mind was elsewhere though during our meeting. My thoughts and prayers were for two young men who possess much talent and have so much potential. Two guys that I know well who have fallen away from church and their faith. A few of us have been trying to reach them with little or no response. They have really shut down. I always saw these two and still do hope that someday they would be two of the younger guys to replace us "has beens" as church leaders. As I was listening to all the things that God is doing and participating as well, my only thoughts were of those two. "You're gonna miss this".

They need to get on track or they will not be there to hear or see what God is doing. I know the proper English term would be "You are going to miss this". But I am in a Country Music mood and it's "You're gonna miss this"!  This morning a piece of my heart seems to be missing. But here's what I can do about it. Pray, pray and pray. I can split a piece of twisted oak firewood usually with one swing. I can shoot ducks with the best of them. I can still swing a pretty good pipe wrench. But with this issue none of what I possess as gifts or talents will help. Strength, skill, or a strong will are all useless right now. The best thing I can do is ask God to help and do what I cannot do. I thank Him for humbling me to my knees.  Late last night I realized that I just need to surrender and lean on the Master. Then I fell asleep. He'll fix the piece of my heart too!

God bless,
Marty

Saying Goodbye 2/10/2015

Good Morning,

My cup is crying out to me to fill it with some of the Door County Cherry Crème Coffee that is brewing in the kitchen. I am going to give in and answer that call.

Every now and then in everyone's life it just seems that there comes a time to part ways and move on. Sometimes it is by choice but many times the parting takes place because of circumstances. It could be a job change that requires a move to another city. It could be health reasons that cause someone to move to a different climate. It could be the loss of a spouse that requires a change. It could be that God has placed a call to you and He desires your service elsewhere. No matter the reason change comes whether we like it or not. Sometimes, even during our happiest times we need to say goodbye.

One person that I have always admired is Abraham. He had that type of faith and resolve that God looks for. When God asked Him to move, there was no hesitation.

The Call of Abram

12 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.
“I will make you into a great nation,
    and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.
I will bless those who bless you,
    and whoever curses you I will curse;
and all peoples on earth
    will be blessed through you.
So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he set out from Harran. He took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan, and they arrived there.

You will note in the verses above that Abraham actually left some people behind. He had to say goodbye. Saying goodbye is never easy, but from time to time God calls us elsewhere. We see Abraham's obedience is accompanied with a promise. All of the Earth would be blessed because of Abraham. So don't be surprised that in order to be a blessing to others, God might require you to make some kind of logistical change. Sometimes goodbye can be painful, or it becomes the next adventure in God's directions for your life and a time of cheer. Whatever the call or new goal, embrace it with prayer and be obedient.  God wants to bless others through you.

God bless,
Marty

Where's The Beef? 2/9/2015

Good Morning,

Monday already? Where do the weekends go? I am starting the day extremely early in anticipation of a lot of work. My mug is filled with Door County Highlander Grog Coffee. Off to work in a few minutes, deep in thought.

"Where's the Beef" was a popular phrase used in advertising more meat on hamburgers by knocking the other burger places as not having enough meet on their burgers.

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Where's the beef?" is a catchphrase in the United States and Canada. The phrase originated as a slogan for the fast food chain Wendy's. Since then it has become an all-purpose phrase questioning the substance of an idea, event, or product

First airing on January 10, 1984, the original commercial featured three elderly ladies examining an exaggeratedly large hamburger bun topped with a minuscule hamburger patty.

So what does this have to do with a daily devotional? I am a meat and potatoes kind of guy. I can do a salad occasionally, but it's the meat that I enjoy. So most of the salads I eat have some type of meat in them. Blueberries and alfalfa sprouts are best left to feed rabbits in my book.

I was listening to a radio sermon yesterday and the speaker was very eloquent and quite dynamic. I can see where many people would want to listen to him. Although it was entertaining, the message was lukewarm at best. The content was missing and although it could provide a "warm fuzzy" for a little while there was no meat? It was designed to hold a place, not advance. It was so politically correct that it was Biblically weak. At the end there was a second speaker who came on and advised people that if any part of the message brought them to a point of needing more that they should call a local church for assistance or a toll free number and someone would talk with them. Not once was the name of Jesus mentioned as the answer to a need. Jesus is the meat needed in today's world of chaos and confusion. Anything less is a blueberry salad mixed with tofu. It lasts a little while but really won't sustain you very long. So be careful to have a Spiritual diet that contains Jesus, anything less is just an air biscuit.

John 14:6
Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me

Acts 4:12
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

God bless,

Marty

Hopping From One Leg To The Other 2/8/2015

Good Morning,

It sure would be nice to be sharing a cup of my Door County Jingle Bell Java with you this morning. Wouldn't that be a hoot?

Clint Walker once said in the Television Western Cheyenne "You people have been hopping from one leg to the other so much you forgot how to walk straight."

He was describing a town's people who out of fear, laziness and unwillingness to get involved, forgot what was really important to them.

Revelation 2:4-6New King James Version (NKJV)
Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love. Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.

Now you just learned a little bit more about me. I like to watch old Western television shows and movies. Hang on there Pilgrim, don't judge. I also watch educational shows like the Three Stooges and Bud Abbott and Lou Costello. Now you know Who's on First!

Anyway this applies to many of us. We claim to be Christians when it is convenient. I have watched this over and over. Now pull up your big boy or big girl britches cause this cowboy boot might just land on the saddle side of your anatomy.

Every year we host Christmas caroling to some nursing homes. A lot of people will come to our home for the caroling and then some fellowship. Every year I listen to someone say "we need to go there more often, I want to get involved." I always politely say call me when you are ready we will set you up. I am still waiting for that phone to ring.

Or there are those who need help in a crisis and our pastoral staff along with the elders drop what they are doing because of their holy calling and  rush to aid, counsel, console, deliver food, for whatever need has come about. Then within a few weeks or months you don't hear from the party that called until the next crisis.

Or there are those that I call the "drippy faucets". They desire to get closer to God. At first they drip with enthusiasm and then pour forth holiness like a faucet that can't be shut off. The church doors open and they rush in like ants at a picnic. Then out of nowhere the world's plumber comes in and fixes that gusher with other attractions in life, booze, adultery, anger, laziness, greed and many more to interrupt their walk. Have a person hop on one leg and go by you. See how little effort it takes to knock them over with a tiny push. Down they go. Now really don't try this at home. This takes highly trained professionals like the Three Stooges.

Once again I hear the drippy faucets call of "where is God, I don't feel it anymore, this walk doesn't work." I turn them around and ask them to quit hopping around on their one leg of commitment and Christianity and take them to the verses above. You just can't keep a walk moving forward hopping around from idea to idea, from fad to fad from temptation to temptation.

Ephesians 3:17 (AMP)

17 May Christ through your faith [actually] dwell (settle down, abide, make His permanent home) in your hearts! May you be rooted deep in love and founded securely on love,

Well stranger pass this on to someone who needs it, if you don't. If this hit you hard, well pull my boot out of your saddle pad and get going. Make a commitment and vow to make it stick.

1 Kings 19:11-13King James Version (KJV)

11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

Ecclesiastes 5:4-6
When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands?
Well in closing. The last two verses are two that I title. God speaks softly but carries a big stick!

Have a great day!
Marty

When The Water Is Like Glass 2/7/2015

Good Morning,

Today will start with fresh maple oatmeal, an orange and some Door County Red Velvet Mocha as I write to you and then read some of God's word. Such a quiet morning.

Psalm 23:2-3New King James Version (NKJV)
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.

This is a picture of a cold November morning. That  is me setting decoys in the early morning when the ice was just starting to form along the shore. I was with my nephew Nick who snapped this photo. That was a great day for duck hunting.

I recall reading Psalm 23 on my smart phone that morning while waiting for the ducks to fly. It was so calm out there that the water was like glass. I was thinking about how stressful work had been that week and that I needed a restful weekend. Nothing rests me up better than some quiet time in my boat while sipping coffee, eating a donut, and being accompanied by another good man and my dog. God knew just what I needed. He led me to still waters, my mind was on Him and I could not help but pray and be thankful for the peace granted to me that morning. Not only did I read about the still waters, God gave me a photo to visualize the Shepherd's gift of calm for me.

God desires to have us trust Him daily. One day at a time, we must trust Him. Doing that will always lead to a peace and loss of fear that surpasses all understanding. It is in that trust that we can lose stress, fear and anger. That is the still waters spoken of in Psalm 23.

May the ripples of life be small today.

God bless,
Marty

Applesauce Memories 2/6/2014

Good Morning,

I knew Friday would return to me. It always comes right on time just after Thursday. My coffee this morning is Door County Caramel Apple. I placed and order for more coffee yesterday. Can't wait to have a little Highlander Grog in the pantry.

Last night we dined on some light Italian Sausages and applesauce. The applesauce was preserved for this winter last fall. We had a pretty large apple harvest  and we are still enjoying the fruits of our labors. We were blessed by God with an abundance. As I was eating the applesauce my mind started to wander and I recalled just how much I love to see the lilac and apple blossoms when they explode on to the scene in our yard. I don't believe that there is any other time that I enjoy our yard more than that short time when all is blossoming. It gives me great peace to see it.

I ran into a man last week who came up to me and asked me if I remembered him. I struggled with my memory. He looked familiar but it wasn't coming to me as to just who he could be. When he told me that I was his youth leader 30 years ago and that he was 44 years old now, married and the father of four I was amazed. I started to recall him as a teen. I didn't see a bright future for him although he had great potential. He went on to tell me about his family and their accomplishments and how proud he was of them.  He also was proud to say, "ask me if I attend church". I always told all the kids that when they ran into me later in life that I would hold them accountable for their church life and Christian growth.  I asked him about church. He replied that he was a church starter in third world countries and had gone to Bible school later in life just to discover that God had placed a call to him for service in missions. I almost fainted! He thanked me for teaching him to listen for God. I always have tried to teach kids that lesson. I never would have thought that he listened even one little bit.  I can't take any credit for launching him into life as a missionary. God did all of that through the Holy Spirit. I do revel in the fruits of my labors though. I was with him the night that he received Jesus as Lord and Savior. Unfortunately his family and us both moved in opposite directions and I lost track of them. Of course I did nothing to "save him" but I told him about Jesus. Jesus did the rest.

Friends like the apple trees, we are never assured of a harvest yet I wait each fall to see what comes. Sometimes it is great and other years not so hot. But each year I prune, water and fertilize in hopes of a harvest. It's the same way with evangelism. We are not assured of a harvest, but we plant a seed and hope. Sometimes you never know just how big or small the harvest will be. But we need to plant   faithfully. Like the apple harvest, we just have to wait and see!

Matthew 28:16-20New King James Version (NKJV)

The Great Commission

16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted.
18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore[a] and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen

So today, don't wait to tell others about Jesus. You never know when they will move and how the harvest might not be reaped because you did not plant the seed.

God bless,
Marty

Praying Knees 2/5/2015

Good Morning,

It is super cold today. My bones are cold to the core this morning. My Door County Christmas Coffee is warming me from the inside out. My wool hat will be pulled on tight. I believe that a man loses his hair just so he can appreciate his wool hat more.

Psalm 34:1-4

34 I will bless the Lord at all times;
His praise shall continually be in my mouth.
My soul shall make its boast in the Lord;
The humble shall hear of it and be glad.
Oh, magnify the Lord with me,
And let us exalt His name together.
I sought the Lord, and He heard me,
And delivered me from all my fears.

In today's Bible verses the Psalmist writes that despite what the circumstances are, good or bad,  he
will praise the Lord and bless Him with his words at all times. The Psalmist gives us an invitation to join him in his praise to the Lord.

The Psalmist also expresses that he was brought through his worst fears. This he proudly exclaims was because he sought out the Lord.

Again what stands out to me is that the Psalmist invites us to join him in his praise and adoration of God. The writer wants us to share in his joy.

When was the last time that you asked people to join you in praise and excitement. We often ask for people to join us in prayer. I think this is a very good idea and would never discourage prayer meetings. I happen to love prayer meetings. But when was the last time that you threw a "Praise Party"?  When was the last time when things looked darkest that you asked others to join you in praise?

In the verses above we see a trust level in God that is second to none. We see a willingness to accept the circumstances because of a love that is second to none. We also see that there is a humility level that is proud to be humble.

I once heard a preacher say that he was blessed to be needy and humbled by circumstances. It helped to keep his praying knees from getting lazy. It was during these times that he spent more time with God.

Just like I said. I enjoyed the hair on my head when I was a youth. But with it's loss I appreciate wool even more. So don't laugh at my hat, join me in praise that I need one and have a nice one. LOL

Sometimes life's trials take us closer to the Lord. So let's all try to praise Him right on through to the end. Let's ask others to join us as we draw closer to God.

God bless,
Marty

He Could Have Called 2/4/2015

Good Morning,

Another little snow storm dropped a good sized amount of snow on our driveway last night. What a blessing to have a neighbor who was there when I got home and was using his new snow blower to help us out. How nice is that?
My mug is filled with Door County German Chocolate Cake Coffee this fine morning.

Matthew 26:53
"Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?

Psalms 91:11-12

For He will give His angels charge concerning you, To guard you in all your ways. They will bear you up in their hands, That you do not strike your foot against a stone.

Jesus came from Heaven to die for the sins of the world. Did you ever think about that lonely time before His death on the cross? Jesus could have called  1000 angels to take Him down, seal His wounds and fight His captors. But He didn't. What kept Him there? Was it the threat of the Roman guards? Was it fear of their spears and swords? Was it the nails that held Jesus to the wood of the cross? No! It was none of these. What kept Him there was love. Love for His Father and love for you and me.

1 John 4:19-21New King James Version (NKJV)
19 We love Him because He first loved us.

Romans 5:8New King James Version (NKJV)
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

So if today you wonder if you are loved, He could have called, but He didn't. That's how much you are loved.

God bless,
Marty

Getting To Yes 2/3/2015

Good Morning,

My cup is filled with Door County Caramel Apple Coffee today. My warm coat and hat are ready and I will soon be headed off to work. One of the luxuries that I really enjoy on a cold day is my wool coat and my wool hat. There is nothing better than to be wrapped warmly in wool on a cold day.

Isaiah 6:8New International Version (NIV)
Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? And who will go for us?
And I said, “Here am I. Send me!”

How heavy my heart gets when I hear people respond to a call from another Christian for service within the church body. "I will pray about it" is usually an answer that means probably not. "When I get my bills all paid, I should be able to help out" usually means probably not. "When the kids are older" usually means probably not. "After I study and know more, I can help" usually means probably not. "That isn't what I am interested in" usually means probably not.

But yet when we pray for immediate needs we expect an answer right away. We want that yes now. But yet we ask God to wait until we "get to yes".

In the meantime while He is supposed to wait for our yes, another person passes away without hearing about Jesus. Another teen gives up on life and commits suicide instead of us answering the call to help in Youth Groups. Another wife takes a beating while He waits on us to make calls to those we haven't seen in a long time. Another elderly person doesn't make it to church because we are too busy to give them a ride. When we are less busy we can get involved, probably not.

God is looking for people who can get to yes right away when He calls. What's your excuse? What happens when God doesn't wait? Well here's the answer. You miss out on seeing God at work and you live a life that emits  never "getting to yes".  You live in a void that lacks the power to let God rearrange your life. God does not arrange His schedule to meet yours. He is God, and He expects you to meet His schedule, or He moves on and you miss out.

So when someone seems to be asking the impossible, ask God to show you how He will get you to YES.

God bless,
Marty
