Ending June 6/30/14

Good Morning,

My coffee this Monday is Door County Cherry Crème. This will be a short week. In the United States we will be celebrating our Independence Day on Friday July Fourth. It will be a nice three day weekend.

Can you believe June is over after today is finished? Where did the time go? I was recapping the last six months in my mind as to all that has happened and what I have been through. It has been a busy six months. There are a lot of things that I set as goals for 2014 and even with 6 months left to the year I don't see me finishing a few of them.

But today is the last day of June. I want to finish today strong. I have some work that has to be finished. I also want to make sure that those around me are told that they are appreciated and loved.

I think that this is a good goal and can be accomplished. So to start the day off, if you are reading this, please know that you are loved.

Philippians 3:13-14
Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Have a great day. Pass it on.

Prayer Service 6/29/2014

Good Morning,

Sunday morning and it looks to be a very hot and humid day. Ladies don't worry about your hair in the humidity as you attend church. God doesn't care how your hair flopped today. He just wants to hear from you and see you. My coffee this morning is Door County Cherry Crème. I am nursing a headache and I have the cup placed on my forehead in between sips of this tasty grog.

We will be entertaining family today with a cook out in the back yard. It is a brat and burger day along with other goodies. Strawberries are easy to come by now. So one of the big treats of the day will be strawberries and a whipped dip that tastes a lot like cotton candy. I had a war on my hands last night keeping the Mrs. from sampling the dip after it was done.

Our church has a 5:00PM Saturday evening worship service each week. Once a month after the service we invite people to stay for prayer. Last night was one of those nights. The prayer service only had eight people in it last night. I have seen more in attendance and a lot less. It is always held on the last Saturday of the month. I must say that I wouldn't have traded that experience for anything else last night. It was the sweetest time in the Lord. There were no agendas. Most of the prayer that was experienced was intercessory prayer for others. Many people were prayed for. You could feel the love in the room. The prayers that were said were truly directed by the Holy Spirit.

I am very worried that corporate prayer is becoming a thing of the past. Or it is combined with other things that make gathering more attractive. Last night there wasn't any food to be had. There wasn't any game time or fellowship. This was prayer at it's best, directed by the Holy Spirit. If it takes potato chips and game time to attract people to corporate prayer it will always take a gimmick to keep people praying together.

Friends, join in on a prayer service. Don't miss the experience of devoting an hour or two to prayer with others. Certainly, have your own personal prayer time. Live prayerfully. Pray with your families. But take time to gather with others just for prayer. Take time to prepare your hearts for corporate prayer. If you are running around making strawberry dip to take for fellowship and fixing your hair, prayer has already been made number two for the evening.

Matthew 18:20

New International Version (NIV)
20 For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

Jesus does attend fellowship gatherings, I will not disagree. But last night with that small group, He was the main attraction.

God bless, Pray today!

When God Sends A Message 6/28/2014

Good Morning.

My coffee today is Door County Hazelnut Crème. Saturday and a lot to do today. heading out with the guys for a little clay target shooting and competition among a few churches.

I want to share a little something with you all today. God does speak through His word the Bible. He may also share a word to us through Scripture that someone else shares. No matter by messenger or by reading ourselves and being in prayer, when God speaks one would be advised to follow the message. People can and do bring a world of hurt and calamity on themselves and others by not listening. At the root of it all is a strong will that wants to have their own way or wants to hang on to their sin. "The sins we like to keep"!

God clearly warns us.

Hebrews 4:7
Again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”

We are not to harden our hearts. God clearly expects us to listen.

Nahum 1:2-6
The Lord is a jealous and avenging God; the Lord is avenging and wrathful; the Lord takes vengeance on his adversaries and keeps wrath for his enemies. The Lord is slow to anger and great in power, and the Lord will by no means clear the guilty. His way is in whirlwind and storm, and the clouds are the dust of his feet. He rebukes the sea and makes it dry; he dries up all the rivers; Bashan and Carmel wither; the bloom of Lebanon withers. The mountains quake before him; the hills melt; the earth heaves before him, the world and all who dwell in it. Who can stand before his indignation? Who can endure the heat of his anger? His wrath is poured out like fire, and the rocks are broken into pieces by him.

I guess we have been warned.  I wonder if we are smart enough to heed the word?

God bless,
Marty

Help For Depression 6/27/2014

Good Morning,

I have a busy day ahead with much to do. My coffee this morning is Door County Red Velvet Mocha. The weather is dreary and not much of a pick me up.

Dear Friends, I think that from time to time we all suffer our bouts with depression. It would be real easy to write a blog today and say "suck it up it's not that bad". But that would not be fair and really not realistic at all. We all have our own paths to follow in life. At each turn there can be something that has an impact on us that causes us to wonder if it will ever end. For some one turn in life leads to a barrage of circumstances that are lined up and just seem to be too much to handle.

For many of us depression sets in and we start to take count of our life and wonder where God is in all of this? We even question our existence.  I have made the mistake of saying "what's next"? Not looking for a reprieve but almost wanting another tough blow.

Since from time to time we have all been there in the depths of depression, it should be easy for us to spot someone who is fighting with depression. Then it is our duty to reach out and offer a smile, an ear, a prayer, and some comfort. I can't be with all of you today and you can't be everywhere either. But God can be and He does speak through His word. I have placed below some Bible verses that reassure us that God is with each of us and that we can turn to him and say, "Lord this is getting the best of me. I hurt and need you to comfort me". He will not let you down.

Psalms 34:17 When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles.
Psalms 40:1-3 I waited patiently for the LORD; he inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the pit of destruction, out of the miry bog, and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear, and put their trust in the LORD.

God wants to help. Let Him in for a good cry. He will stay right there through it all. Most of all. remember that whether I know you or not, I will pray for each of you who reads this today in a general prayer. You are loved.

God bless,
Marty

Beautiful Rest 6/26/2014

Good Morning,

I must learn to pack coffee along when I travel. I will have some coffee later with breakfast. I wish I had packed some Door County Peanut Butter Crunch Coffee for this morning.

Genesis 2: 2-3 “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”

Exodus 33:14 “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”

I will be the first one to admit that I do keep a hectic schedule. But for the past couple days I have been at rest. I have been blessed to be able to work for an employer that gives us personal time to use for vacations. I was able to take three days off this week and it allowed me to spend time with our grandson and also visit my dad in Michigan. It's been three days of early to bed after some great meals and sleeping in just a little bit. I am a creature of habit and am an early riser. But these last couple of days found me grabbing an extra hour of sleep in the morning. I will say that after this extra rest I do feel pretty good and have recharged a little. Our pace for activity has been slow. I will return to work tomorrow and the pace will pick up. But I know this I will think about this rest and the good it has done. I will be looking forward to the next one.

Friends, God has designed us in such a way that we can go a long time on short sleep, perform long hours of labor and make a difference by doing so. He has also designed us to need sleep and rest. This is a gift that God has given us. During my down time I actually found that I can spend a little more time in prayer with God. There are two benefits rolled into rest. Rest and God.

Take some time, enjoy a nap. Drink a slow cup of coffee. Watch the sun go down. Miss the sunrise once!

God bless,
Marty

Pizza The Common Thread 6/25/2014

Good Morning,

I find myself in a small cabin in Upper Michigan without any Door County Coffee today. But if I was able to make a pot it would be Door County Cherry Crème. I am enjoying some time with my Dad and grandson. My first thoughts were of prayer for  friends of mine who are out on short term mission trips. Two in South America, one in Haiti and one in Pennsylvania. My prayers are with you this day. Hopefully our agenda will be to haul some fire wood home for Grandpa and then practice some clay target shooting with our shot guns. I know one thing for sure dodging mosquitos will be number one on the agenda. Oh my they are bad here!

My Dad will be 82 this year. I am 57 years old and my grandson is a whopping 13. All three of us carry pocket knives, all three actually wear our pants pulled up and none of us have piercings. All three of us like to hunt. So except for the generation gap in age, we have a lot in common.

Last night we went out to eat to a supper club on a big lake. This club makes pizza that is excellent to say the least. All three of us had our fill of pizza before going off to watch a baseball game on television. But while dining I noticed that there were other tables also eating pizza. They too had many years of difference in age sitting at their tables. Everyone seemed happy to be eating pizza.

My thought is this. We have the techno age group. We have the good fortune of still having some of the folks raised during the great depression, and then us baby boomers. Here's an example of one difference that I noted. All three of us have cell phones. One never turns it on. "It is for emergencies only." One of us turns it on and uses it but has no idea what half of the applications are for. The last one has a cell phone also, and knows what all the applications are for and needs them just to figure out what 25% of our bill was so we can leave a tip. The other two had it figured out in their heads.

But all three of us agreed that the pizza was great. We really enjoyed our time last night. So here is the key. Pizza is a common thread that can be used to have generations get together for the good of learning from one another. The table then becomes a comfortable place to talk about anything including our Lord. Yes we discussed a little church and the Lord last night over pizza. I believe God gave us pizza as a tool to be used for good. Praise the Lord and pass the pizza!

Acts 2:39
"For the promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call to Himself

Ok, find the best pizza place and enjoy a night of conversation. Pizza will be the bridge to any age gap. Jesus will be the dessert.

God bless,
Marty

Jesus The Son Of God 6/24/2014

Good Morning from Wisconsin.

My coffee this morning is Door County Highlander Grog. The term grog seems to match the weather and my state of mind. Another foggy, rainy day. If this were only duck season I would claim this as the perfect day. But no complaints here. I am blessed to be off from work today and to be able to spend time with our grandson Dominick. No matter what we do today it will be nice just to have the whole day together.

John 3:16-18(NIV)

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

The Bible verses above are a mouth full. They explain the gift God sent to  you and I that we might have eternal life in heaven. These are beautiful words with an out of this world promise. But yet there is a section that should strike fear into anyone. "but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son."

There are two promises within these passages both deal with eternity. One is heaven and one is hell. God sent His one and only Son to complete the task and give the invitation. Through Jesus the Christian church was established to carry on the message under the power of the Holy Spirit. God did and does so much to let us know that we are loved enough to have His Son Jesus die on the cross for us. He raised Jesus up so we would never have to doubt. Jesus showed us victory over the grave and then invites us to follow Him home to live. The other, not so nice. Without Jesus we are condemned.

These are some of the most memorized verses, ones seen the most on television through sporting events. Yet I believe these verses are also taken for granted because we tend not to appreciate the true price paid for our eternal life.

Think about it for a moment. Most kids really never know what price was paid for a gift given to them by their family. Some without means don't know that Dad's work shoes are held together with glue while they ride a new bike. Or how many mothers don't eat so the kids are fed. They just know that there is some food or a bike. We tend to forget what this gift cost God and Jesus.

Today's thought is this. Be thankful for the gift of Jesus. If He never ever did another thing for you didn't He already do enough?

God bless,
Marty

Cleaning the Car 6/23/2019

Good Morning,

Monday again and it will be a very busy day. It was a very nice weekend and my coffee today is a salute to next weekend. I am drinking Door County Hazelnut Crème. One does have to set personal goals. Next Saturday our church will participate in a sporting clay competition with four other churches. We all look forward to the fellowship and just a little "smack talk" among friends.

Yesterday afternoon the weather was kind enough to let me clean the car. I had help from my able bodied number one grandson. The foggy weather along Lake Michigan cancelled our outing to the Milwaukee Air and Water Show. But it was better to the West.

Well my Jeep really needed a cleaning from top to bottom. Time constraints being what they are hadn't allowed me to really clean that monster since hunting season. We found plenty of feathers and some muck left over from one of the many marshes we trod in October and November. I really had let this go too long. I could tell exactly what my grandson was thinking. " And you tell me to clean my room"??????

We all need to take time to set good examples. On this one, I missed the boat. I knew we were in trouble when he asked "does this thing have back seats?" Young eyes are upon us at all times.  I need to do better on this one. Teach them right. We only have one chance.

Titus 2:7 (NIV)

In everything set them an example by doing what is good. In your teaching show integrity, seriousness

Hey the Jeep smells good now! God Bless your day!

Rain, Rain Go Away. 6/22/15

Good Morning,

Job 38:28

Does the rain have a father? Who fathers the drops of dew?

Job 37:6 (NIV)

He says to the snow, ‘Fall on the earth,’
and to the rain shower, ‘Be a mighty downpour.’

Sunday and I am up early, drinking Door County Chocolate Meltdown Coffee. My thoughts this morning are prayerful. I am remembering our church mission team who is in Brazil for a short term trip to represent Jesus Christ and start the building process for a small church.

I have tried to figure out this weather we have been experiencing so far this summer. It has been raining now for about a week. Everyone is wondering when it will stop for awhile.

I have the answer. The answer is !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When God wants it to. We might be experiencing more rain so the Great Lakes can provide water for people to drink. Maybe there is a drought coming and this is the way God is filling up the reservoirs. Maybe God loves mosquitos.

I am not sure what He has planned, but I know this, He has one. So I will trust that He knows best.

So enjoy your day. This is the day the Lord has made.

God bless,
Marty

Spicy Hot Wings 6/21/2014

Good Morning,

Saturday is here and time for an extra coffee this morning. My flavor today is Door Count Peanut Butter Crunch. I will be meeting with a dear old friend today to shoot some clay targets. I am looking forward to the time.

Last night for supper we made a little bit of everything that all three of us might like to eat. I mentioned before that our Grandson Dominick is here for an extended visit. He really likes chicken wings. So for his third of the supper we cooked up some buffalo hot wings. From across the room I could smell that they were pretty spicy. But in the interest of being a team player I downed a couple myself. I think that sweat running from my face proved to him that the spices were hot enough. Dom ate a plateful and at this time I am still chewing Tums. There was a time in life when the food was never spicy enough for me. But as I get older just a little dash of pepper is enough.

I have to admit that I can't eat the things I used to. I have to become more disciplined to say no to these spicy foods that cause discomfort.

Great thing about the Bible. There is a verse for every cause or issue. The story above is true. The lesson is this. Seek out all answers for life in the Bible.

Proverbs 23:2
And put a knife to your throat if you are given to appetite.

Now that is a severe answer!

God bless,
Marty

Complaint Department Closed 6/20/2014

Good Morning,

Friday has arrived and right on time. I have a lot of driving to do today so I am starting my day with some extra strong Door County Cherry Crème Coffee.

I was listening to a lot of people this week talk about the weather. There's too much rain. It's too hot, and then the inevitable, it's too cold. There is a saying in Wisconsin " if you don't like the weather wait fifteen minutes and it will change.

My belief is this. In general, people like to complain. My car is old. My husband isn't affectionate. My kids don't understand me. My job is boring. Winter is too long. The summer is too hot. The Packers played terrible even though they won. My feet hurt. We all just love to complain. Try to take note of what you say for the first four hours of today. Then see how many times you complained or whined. Listen for the complaints of other people. Add them up, the amount will surprise you.

Friends, the Bible has some wisdom to share on complaining.

Philippians 2:14

Do all things without grumbling or questioning,

Ephesians 4:29

Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

James 5:9

Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.

Numbers 11:1-4

And the people complained in the hearing of the Lord about their misfortunes, and when the Lord heard it, his anger was kindled, and the fire of the Lord burned among them and consumed some outlying parts of the camp. Then the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire died down. So the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the Lord burned among them. Now the rabble that was among them had a strong craving. And the people of Israel also wept again and said, “Oh that we had meat to eat!

The bible has much to say about complaining. Here is the truth. God does not like it when we complain. So for the rest of today. Close your complaint department. Try it. You might just find yourself happier.

God bless,
Marty

Ketchup and Fries 6/19/2014

Good Morning,

Thursday and I can see Friday just over the top of my glasses. My coffee this morning is Door County Red Velvet Mocha. It has been a tough couple of days in our area of the world. Severe storms tore apart the Midwest the last two days.

So last night we pampered ourselves with some frozen custard at one of the local emporiums. While we were munching on our frozen treats I could not help but watch a toddler across from us eating away on a bag of French fries. He had his own unique style. He would dip his fingers into the ketchup and then pick up some fries and eat them. Besides being amusing to us, I found that he was very proud of his technique and quite satisfied with life.

I got to thinking about his style. I said to myself, " who says that the little guy is wrong"? It seems to work for him and he would rather dip his fingers than his fries. At the moment all that mattered to him were his fries and ketchup. He had no idea what a war was, our what it meant to go to work, he hadn't broken up with a girlfriend yet. He had no idea what abortion is, murder or rape.

I paused and looked up and prayed for that kid. "Lord I do not know his name, but please spare him from seeing the ugly side of life."

You know if we all thought like a little child wouldn't the world be just a little easier to stomach? We would just sit down eat our fries, share some, and down a Coke. Is that too much to ask?

Matthew 18:2-4

New International Version (NIV)
He called a little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

Have a great day. Be a kid.

Take Off Your Shoes 6/17/2014

Good Morning,

I am writing this morning with a song in my heart and a cup of Door County Hazelnut Crème Coffee in my mug. We are really enjoying some great time with Dominic our grandson. He has been a big help.

After a long day at work the first thing that comes off after my tie are my shoes. After a long day of hunting the first thing that I take off after coming home are the heavy boots I wear. There is just something nice about walking with bare feet in the summer or in a pair of heavy socks in the winter. Better yet my camouflage slippers let me know for sure that I am home. We are sending a Mission Team to Brazil to build a church and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. They will be doing a lot of walking. I will be praying for their comfort and safety as they leave this Friday. Although they will have tired feet, their feet are blessed.

Romans 10:15 (ASV)

15 and how shall they preach, except they be sent? even as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that bring glad tidings of good things!

So next week when you get home and pull your shoes off and rub your feet, pray for those you know who are out on the mission field walking for Jesus. Let your feet be used as reminders to pray.

God bless,
Marty

Aiming High 6/16/2014

Good Morning.

Monday again and I don't quite see Friday in my glasses just yet. My coffee this morning is Door County German Chocolate Cake.

I had a wonderful time yesterday shooting sporting clays with my grandson Dominic. It was his first time out and he was a little apprehensive at first. He was a little disappointed at the first stand. But the apprehension left when he pooped that first clay target on the next stand. I must admit that the course was pretty tough yesterday. As we were teaching Dom to anticipate the targets path and shoot above, below, or swing through laterally I did say that on the next shot to "Aim High". We told him to follow through and let his eyes lead his arms.

Hebrews 12:1-2aTherefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”

That is how it should be in our Christian walk. We should always be aiming high to be more like Christ every day. We all have a starting point in life, and God isn't finished with any of us.

We need to "Aim High" and try to achieve the goal.  Take a look at where you are in your walk. Where would you like to be?

Like Dom, we can hit the target for our walk as long as our eyes are on Jesus. Follow through.

God Bless.

Our Father Who Art In Heaven.6/15/2014

Good Morning,

Coffee outside on the patio on our trusty picnic table. What a great way to start my day. My coffee of choice this morning is Door County Red Velvet Mocha. My wife and our grandson are both still sleeping, our Springer Spaniel Gibbs is sitting right next to me forever watching the sky for that first sign of fall. It is Father's Day here in America.  I sit back and reflect and  I am thankful for the hard working man I call Dad.  My brother and his boys are visiting him today and I will see him in a couple weeks. I look forward to that time. Our grandson will be with me and the three generations will share in a few days of fishing.

The prayer that Jesus gave us is called the Our Father. In the title for today I just wrote the first part of the opening statement. The second part of the opening verse is Hallowed Be Thy Name.

I am pretty sure that I cannot do written justice to those statements at all. First of all Jesus gave them to us. What could be added? Secondly they stand out alone as two of the most loving verses in the Bible.

The fact Christians can say "Our Father" at all is amazing. This right of adoption into God's family was paid for by suffering and love that surpasses all understanding. The next point is "Who Art In Heaven". Who doesn't want to see their Dad? This means that  we have a trip ahead of us and the family will be there. God will only take us to the best place. But then comes the "Hallowed Be Thy Name". We are reminded of Who loves us. Our Father is Holy, and deserves to be called in the most affectionate names. As we chew on that today, we are reminded how many times the name of God is abused and used in vain. When this is done by us or others it is speaking slander and malice toward our Loving Father. So as you observe Fathers Day today remember our Heavenly Father desires to be loved, respected and obeyed. That's all He asks for. So if you haven't sent a card yet and you really can't just open your mouth and say. Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Your name.

It has instant delivery and is never late.

God bless,
Marty

Welcome Home Jesus 6/14/2014

Good Morning,

Saturday and it's going to be busy around the house today. We still are doing yard repairs from last winter's barrage on property. My coffee this morning is Door County Heavenly Caramel.

We are have a few people over this week for a cookout. Some of them will be heading to Brazil the next day for a mission trip. My wife is already in "cleaning mode". The place has to look it's best for company.

Many times I hear people say that Jesus lives within them through the Holy Spirit. I ask where does He reside? They reply proudly "within my heart". I always smile because I like their answer and they show that they know and love Jesus. But here's the question. If Jesus were coming to live in your home, and you were to give Him his own room would it be clean? Would their be dust under the bed?  Would the walls need painting? Would their be dirty socks on the floor? The answer is this, probably not! You would give him your best. But why is it that we believe that Jesus lives within us and we harbor things inside that really make our hearts a messy place to live? Anger, lust, greed, laziness, and un-forgiveness are just a few of the house guests that often have to live with Jesus. Wouldn't we want Jesus to live in a clean house?

Sit back today and reflect on what should be tossed from the home of Jesus. In our town Saturday is the day we can take things to the dump to be disposed of. No one ever goes to the dump and brings back what they took. How about making this a run to the dump day.

Matthew 5:8
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.

Have a great day in a clean home!

Installing New Windows 6/13/2014

Good Morning,

Happy Friday to you all. My coffee this morning could only be Door County Cherry Crème. I am looking forward to the weekend and working a little and playing some too.

Recently we had to install new windows in our home. The old ones were worn and allowing too much of the cold Wisconsin winters through the sides and seals. The glass in one of the windows had become fogged and did not allow the best views to the outside anymore.

After the windows were installed and we could see clearly, my wife (Rene) commented on the installation process. She told me that as the old windows were coming out is was very apparent that the windows were beyond repair and that there was some rotting taking place. We never knew what had crept into the window cavity. They gave every impression that they were just old and getting weak. No way did we know that they were rotting on the inside. Fortunately we caught it before there was permanent damage within the walls.

Sin is like that. It gives the impression on the outside that it causes no harm. But on the inside sin starts a decaying process within a persons ability to have a personal relationship with God that is intimate and loving.

James 1:15
Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

Like a cancer that goes untreated we might not be able to see the cancer but it is rotting organs and flesh waiting to finish it's grim goal, sin is the same way. It might not be seen at first but it takes a toll until it beats down the believer convincing them that there is no hope.

But like windows, cancer now can be treated and sin can be replaced with life through Jesus Christ.

1 John 2:1
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous.

We have hope for a new start through Jesus. Our Spiritual life can be rebuilt, and resurrected in Jesus. We only have to call on the Carpenter. He makes house calls 24/7, 365 days per year.

Why have a life full of holes when it can be "holy" instead?

Food for thought.

God bless.

And The Kid Grows Older 6/12/2014

Good Morning,

Door County Highlander Grog is in the coffee mug today. It is a cold rainy day in Wisconsin. Last night it was so cold that the fireplace needed to be fired up for warmth.

We picked up our grandson at the airport last night. He is visiting for and extended period this summer. He comes from Florida, so to say the least this climate change has been brutal for him. We are looking forward to some fun time with him. Dominick is 13 years old now and stands taller than me. I guess that I  can't call him "Little Crapper" anymore. It wasn't long after we were home that Grandma had him on a project helping her to hang curtains. He found the tools and started in on the project with Grandma as the supervisor.

I wanted so bad to jump in and help, but in all honesty they did not need me. The boy has picked up some skills and was proud to put them to use. I remember the first bird house we made together when he was a little boy. There was more paint on him than on the bird house.

So, to see him tackle a job that most men struggle with made this old man feel pretty good. I will be taking him out and teaching him to shoot his new shot gun this weekend. I wonder how long it will be before he can out shoot me at clay targets?

Here's what I have to say. Young people, if you have a skill use it. Develop new ones and don't be afraid of trying new things.

1 Timothy 4:12(NIV)

12 Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.

God bless,
Marty

Acknowledging The Holy Spirit 6/11/14

Good Morning,

Didn't get everything done that I wanted to yesterday. I will give it a good try today. My coffee is Door County Peanut Butter Crunch. While visiting Door County last weekend I found a supply of leftover Door County Christmas Coffee. I plan on breaking a couple of those bad boys in July. I will start the holidays early.

I think we all know plenty of people who read their Bibles daily. Yet it doesn't seem to make a difference to them or in their lives. It has become a habit, not a matter of life itself.

Deuteronomy 8:3 (NKJV)

So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the Lord.

People who really get this verse realize that when they read God's word and it speaks to them, and it causes a reaction or action, it is the Holy Spirit leading them. They know that there is no real life outside of God's word. You will never find theses people bored with life and their Christian walk. They do however hunger and thirst for more of God each day. The Holy Spirit within is ready and willing to fill every gap and more.

John 14:15-17
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

There is no end to experiencing God through the enlightening of the Holy Spirit. Yet this Blessed Helper is seldom acknowledged, used or appreciated. Many look for help during a crisis but not during times of plenty. Their diet of God is sporadic and basically incomplete. They wander and search never really knowing or experiencing God. They read and pray but do not expect to hear. Or if they have heard they might have decided not to obey what they heard. This is choosing the world over God and really not living the Spirit filled life. For instance we all know that we can get angry, but to enact our anger in revenge or hate is not submitting to the leadership of the Holy Spirit. How can one read God's word and not know to forgive? People say they have forgiven others yet refuse to speak to that person. Well God forgives us and desires to have us know Him in a relationship through Jesus. He sent the olive branch of atonement. Yet people are miserable and then make others miserable. Definitely not the Spirit filled life.

Galatians 5:22-23(NIV)

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

So are you tired of wandering in life, bored with Christianity or just a plain old miserable person who claims to be a Christian? Pray and confess your situation to God. Clear your head and heart, open God's word and ask the Holy Spirit to take the written information and illuminate it for you. Then obey what it says to do.

God bless,
Marty

Old People and Young Dogs 6/10/14

Good Morning,

Today is going to start with a cup of Door County Hazelnut Crème Coffee and a mad dash out the door for work. I am hoping to get an early start and get home at a decent hour so I can shovel wood chips from five stumps that were ground out this weekend.

Our neighbor Jeff owns a Red Labrador who's name is Murphy. Murphy is just about the same age as our Springer Gibbs. At night Jeff will take Murphy for a walk on the other side of our street. They stop for a few seconds and wait. Gibbs usually is watching out the window next to our front door. We know when Jeff and Murphy are across the street when Gibbs barks and whines a little.

When we open the door Murphy drags Jeff across the road and then we let Gibbs out. The two dogs run and wrestle for about a half an hour. They play for awhile and then stand by the garden hose until they get some water and then the circus starts all over. What is amusing is that our elderly neighbors move to their window to watch the two dogs play and run. When their window is open you can hear them laugh. Last night I heard them say "I hope they don't take them to the back yard, we can't see the dogs play back there." We had no idea that these two hunting dogs that like to play were also important to the neighbors. What is a good way for the dogs to exercise is also entertainment for some folks who can't get out much. We stayed in the front yard and intend to do so from now on.

I am glad that we are a part of the day that they look forward to. We both have great hunting dogs. The neighbors will never hunt over the dogs and see a bird flushed or retrieved . But they are appreciated by the older neighbors who just like to watch dogs. When you think about it, the play between the dogs is innocent. Two people sharing a laugh watching our two clowns is just plain joy.

1 Timothy 6:17 (NIV)

17 Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment.

Smile and enjoy an older person and a  dog today. They are gifts form God

How Good Is Your Name? 6/9/2014

Good Morning!!!

I hope your coffee is hot or your juice cold and tasty. My coffee this morning is Door County Cherry Creme.

I just found out that you can actually purchase a book that has over 1000 names that you might want to consider when naming your child. I never knew that there was such a book. Inside they actually explain the meaning of the names in several languages.

But what does God have to say about names?

Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man. – Proverbs 3:3-4

Do you want to win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man? Put others before yourself. Be diligent and prompt at work. Love others despite their faults, always looking for the best. Be a friend when others run out. To have love and faithfulness bound around your neck means that these qualities can be seen in you always. You will be very valuable to your family, your church, your profession, God and your friends.

You may have a name given to you by your parents. But what names would others call you?

God bless,
Marty

Visiting A Church 6/8/2014

Good Morning,

May your Sabbath be blessed, quiet, and restful. I am starting this day off right with a big cup or two of Door County Raspberry Butter Crunch Coffee.

My wife and I are taking some time to rest in one of the most peaceful spots in the world, Door County Wisconsin. We will head home after church. Our plan is to attend church in Ephraim Wisconsin with friends and then go home.

I like to attend church while away from home for two reasons. I want to gather with other believers and worship. I also want to relax and listen to someone else. I always hear God speak when I have time to listen and enjoy a message from an anointed Pastor.  Vacation can be some of the best church experiences you might ever have. God knows you will be there for one Sunday only, maybe two. This message might be just for you. Take advantage of the get away. You might be one who serves in your church all the time for others and your worship time is cut short. God might have something special for you on your day of rest.

1 Kings 19:11-13

New King James Version (NKJV)

God’s Revelation to Elijah

11 Then He said, “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; 12 and after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice.
13 So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Have a great day. I am looking forward to being part of an experience that God has planned for us. Listen hard.

God Completes What He Starts 6/7/2014

Good Morning,

This comes to you from Door County Wisconsin today. Of course I am drinking some Door County Coffee Company " Breakfast Blend" given to me by our host on a bright sunny morning. I can't wait until I hit the coffee shop and pick up a good supply of Cherry Crème Coffee and a bowl of baked oatmeal.

This morning I want to encourage all of us. We all have personality traits that annoy us and others. We don't like the way we act or handle certain situations. These traits often cause issues within the family, at work, church, or with friends. They raise their ugly heads and cause chaos, hurt, fear and disappointment.

One thing I do know for sure is that if we are serious about "self improvement" we have a resource that doesn't quit on us until the job is done. I have to say that for some of us these battles might last a life time. But they do not have to plague us that long.

There are a few simple steps to "self improvement Xanadu."

First admit you have a problem with a personal trait and come to God and ask for help.
1 Peter 5:7 (NKJV)
casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.

Secondly you have as a Christian the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. Now here's the question. Are you a Christian? Have you received Jesus Christ by faith into your heart and experienced the forgiveness of your sins through his death, burial, and resurrection? If not do so by praying and inviting Jesus to come in.

John 1 10-13 (NKJV)
10 He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11 He came to His own,[c] and His own[d] did not receive Him. 12 But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

Romans 10:13 (NKJV)
13 For “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.”[a

Now we can move on. If you just asked Jesus into your hear I rejoice with Heaven for you.

You now have the Holy Spirit dwelling within you giving you the power and help to overcome your issues. He will remind you that your trait is starting to show and that there is a better path to take.

Ezekiel 36:27
"I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances.

I have seen immediate changes within people and then there are some that it seems to take a long time. But here's hope for everyone. God does not quit and He sees it through to completion
Philippians 1  (NKJV)

Paul and Timothy, bondservants of Jesus Christ,
To all the saints in Christ Jesus who are in Philippi, with the bishops[a] and deacons:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
I thank my God upon every remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine making request for you all with joy, for your fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; just as it is right for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart, inasmuch as both in my chains and in the defense and confirmation of the gospel, you all are partakers with me of grace. For God is my witness, how greatly I long for you all with the affection of Jesus Christ.
And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment, 10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ, 11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which are by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.

We are not in our struggle alone. God will provide accountability partners if we ask him to. I believe that is the third step if you are serious about changing.
Why go another day, month or year not liking the "you that you are"? If it needs to go, now can be the day.

God bless,
Marty

Walking Away 6/6/2014

Good Morning,

It is Friday and I knew there was something I always loved about Thursdays. They are just a day ahead of Friday. My coffee is hot and tasty. This morning my flavor of choice is Door County Heavenly Caramel Coffee.

Well yesterday was a highlight. I finished a project that started 9 months ago in a small town in Wisconsin. One of the hospitals in our system needed help and I was asked to go. Yesterday as we finished up and the big inspection was passed with flying colors, it was time to head home and take care of business at the new hospital I have been assigned to.

When this project started a group of my friends and relatives started to pray for me and the project. Many times last winter I would call them in a snow storm asking for more prayer as I tried to make it home. Many, many times the two hour trip would take four to five hours because of road conditions.

When the inspector called today and said he would be there in the afternoon afternoon, I was two hours away. Again my friends prayed and I arrived in the parking lot just as he showed up.

When all was finished there were big smiles on everyone's face as I left. We had accomplished a goal together. ( Maybe they were just happy to see me leave). We thanked each other and I walked away to the parking lot. I looked over my shoulder at the sun setting in the West. I felt empty. I remembered who I had forgotten to thank. I stopped and looked up, remembered all those who prayed for me, and the One who answered their prayers. I spoke out loud and said. "Thank You Father God. You brought me through this storm". I then knew the job was complete.

Psalm 7:17

I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, And will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High.

Have a great weekend. God bless,
Marty

French Fried Authority 6/5/2014

Good Morning,

Up with prayer for a day that hopefully will see the end to a successful project. My mug is filled with Door County Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti Coffee and I am out the door and headed North to Sheboygan Wisconsin.

Yesterday I had kind of a food theme going so I will continue with that thought for today.

Romans 13:1-7
Let every person be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those that exist have been instituted by God. Therefore whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad. Would you have no fear of the one who is in authority? Then do what is good, and you will receive his approval, for he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God's wrath on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.

Authority? In the average Christian home how would you imagine that respect for authority is taught to the children?

Let's take a look. Tax time, do we include all dollars made on the side as income? Or do we burn the authority of government like a cheap hamburger? What do the kids see?

Sick days at work? Do we call in and say we are sick just so we can relax or go somewhere? Do we cheat the authority of our employers and toss aside  rules like a well tossed salad? A salad where we just eat any meat we find and throw away the rest of the salad. We like a pay check but don't want to submit to the rules?  What do the kids see?

How about that drive home after a Sunday Church service and while in the car we just rip the pastor for his sermon or plea? We French Fry the poor guy in front of the kids.

How about at school? Is the teacher ever right anymore? Or do we run and blame the teacher every time little Johnnie or Gertrude gets a bad grade? We come in and make enough noise to flop any cake in any oven.  That's teaching the kids respect.

I could go on for hours on this subject. But kids follow the examples we set. Think about that the next time you say "make sure your seat belts are fastened, we are late and we need to go very fast to get there". Now that's a winner! As you speed off setting the cruise control for just 6 mph over the limit. Now that's road kill for supper mentality. What do the kids learn?

It's your choice. They will respect you as much as you show respect to your authorities.

God bless,
Marty

A&W Root Beer 6/4/2014

Good Morning,

I am praying for a productive day and the positive close to a project at work. My coffee this morning is Door County Chocolate Meltdown.

Last night was a perfectly good night in the Milwaukee Wisconsin area. The weather was a picture of what summer should be. Not too hot, not too cold. It reminded me of nights when I was young and we would as teens do, hit our hang out spots. On my side of town there were plenty of good spots. We had an A&W Root Beer stand with car hops and ice cold mugs of root beer. We can still purchase the root beer and they still have restaurants, but not many close by with the old fashioned car hops. We could also drive over to Big Boy's for a burger and fries. If Custard was our choice we had a place named Leon's. If we were out late there was Suburpia Subs.  We used to hangout and cruise with friends. Our cars all had Thrush Mufflers (Glass packs) so we could hear the roar of the engines in those vintage 1960 cars . Your girlfriend sat right next to you. She was so close that you had to teach her how to shift so you wouldn't get slapped by being fresh. Or she had to move over and that wasn't cool.

So what's the point? How doe this fit a devotional? Well here goes. All those things took place many years ago. They were fun times and I would do most of them all over again. But we all grew in different directions, some to the military, some on to school and then work, some right into the work force, some right into marriage and families. We really don't get to drive to Big Boy's ( They all closed) Leon's is still there but a seat belt separates me from my wife. My car has so many emission gadgets that it doesn't roar but sounds more like a Hoover Vacuum Cleaner on steroids. A&W now serves breakfast and no one on roller skates waits on you. Well Suburpia is back but if I eat more than one in a week I have to take more Lipitor. Things change and we grow older and we can't stop it. But one thing for sure is this. God's Word will last forever. What Jesus promised will always happen.

Isaiah 40:8

King James Version (KJV)
The grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever.

It will stand a lot longer than my 1961 Ford did.

God bless,
Marty

Losing Your Marbles 6/3/2014

Good Morning,

Started my day with a cup of Door County Red Velvet Mocha Coffee. Come to think of it I haven't had any Door County Cherry Crème coffee in a long time. That's going to change soon.

There is a story told to seminary students wishing to become youth pastors. They are given a bag of marbles. Then they are told to fill their mouths with marbles and begin to teach and preach with clarity. Then every time a young teen can clearly understand what they said they can spit out one of the marbles. When they have lost all their marbles they are then youth pastors.

Seriously, the most underpaid in many churches, you guessed it the youth pastors. The ones who catch more flack from parents than anyone else in the church, you guessed it the youth pastors. The ones typically with the least experience???? The ones who tend to last only five years or less in the ministry???? Yup it's the youth pastors. The ones with the most souls to win or lose. Yup it's the youth pastors.

Today is a day I declared "Pray for the Youth Pastors, Lay Youth leaders, Short Term Leaders of Mission Trips for Teens  Day."

Let's take time to encourage them, love them, and assist where we can. In my many years of youth work  experience I can say that most of the time it is a long, long time before you see the fruit of your work.

There was a boy that I had to draw a hard line with a few years back. We actually asked him not to come to youth group because of his behavior. I now see him every Saturday night in church. He spends a lot of time helping others with computer skills that he learned in school. Now I look forward to seeing him every Saturday. He is a good man. God took him through some hard times and now he mentors others. I never thought I would see that one! But deep down, he was listening. He came back.

I see the food pantry in our church that three teen girls prayed into existence 8 years ago. It has fed so many. When I look back at those girls, there were times that they drove me bonkers.  Given the time and support, much can be done through youth workers and youth pastors with teens for the Kingdom of God.

Thessalonians 5:25 "Brethren, pray for us, greet all the brethren with a holy kiss, I adjure you by the Lord to have this letter read to all the brethren, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you."

Paul writes "pray for us" . I think every youth pastor would scream that from the pulpit. Pray for us!!!!!!!!!  They have the future of the church in their hands. They are closer to stopping an abortion or suicide than anyone. Pray for them!

It is a difficult calling that God has given them. He has also given them us. Bring this subject up in prayer in your homes, in your small groups, in your prayer meetings. Pray, Pray and then pray again.

God bless,
Marty

June Already? 6/2/2014

Good Morning,

Monday Morning and I am headed out the door with my mug of Door County Highlander Grog coffee.

6 months into the year already. June is going to be a busy month at our house. We plan on getting away for three days, the grandson is coming to visit, new windows in the house, sending a mission team to Brazil, a family cook out and a charity trap shoot. Before you know it, July will be here. It seems as if the days just rush by. It won't be long until the boat, dog, and my shot gun will be traveling to North Dakota for duck season. Too much in June!

I need to make sure that I have time to stay grounded. This schedule could be a disaster if I lose sight of God as my priority.

Lamentations 3:25 The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him; (NIV)

In all that will go on this month it would be easy to shorten time with God. One needs to guard against that. That "one" is me.

This is sound advice to all. Slow down and remember Your Creator. Don't let the summer come and go and don't let it consume you.

God bless,
Marty

Enjoying The Quiet 6/1/2014

Sunday Morning and it started with a cup of Door County Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti Coffee. Let me say to all, good morning and God bless.

Earlier in the week I promised that I would post a picture of a chair that was re-purposed from trash to useful. It took a little more work than I thought it was going to take to get it just right for my wife.
I was up and out of bed before the sunrise this morning. With my coffee in hand, Gibbs (Our Bird Terrorist English Springer Spaniel) and I went outside to watch the sun come up and enjoy the quiet.

Last night after our Saturday evening church service we held our monthly prayer service. It was great and many people were prayed for as well as many righteous causes. I enjoy the prayer service.

But what I also enjoy is the quiet time outside watching this two year old dog chase birds through the yard. I swear those birds just wait for him to come out and play hide and seek. I enjoy the quiet time spent outside. This morning I reflected on the prayer requests of last night. I couldn't recall any that were spoken of that were for the people who gathered to pray. These prayer warriors were lifting up requests and interceding for others. The prayer service lasted about and hour and a half. The warriors gave up their time to pray for others.
Charles Spurgeon said, “All the Christian virtues are locked up in the word prayer.”

One of the main tasks of the Christian is prayer, to have direct communion with God
.

Sitting in the dim light of an early sunrise with the world quiet around me let me have time to think. If I have any Saturday nights left in me I want to make sure that on at least one Saturday a month I allow myself the luxury of spending time in prayer with people like the ones who gathered last night.

It was a special time. God then gave me a peaceful setting this morning to relive the prayer experience in our yard. I realized that I don’t pray enough and I don’t pray very well. Yet prayer is so important. Indeed, every revival comes on the heels of prayer. For instance, God poured out the Holy Spirit at Pentecost after His new church was on its knees together for 10 days. And later, “When they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit” Acts 4:31 NKJV. We need to pray more as a church and in our own lives.

Have a great day,

Marty
