Wedding Rehearsal 7/31/2015

Good Morning,

Friday has arrived and I just did a cartwheel (in my mind). Rejoicing while reading from the Word of God this morning and my prayer time seemed better. My cup is filled with Door County Highlander Grog Coffee and I am on my way!

Tonight I will be practicing with a wedding party at their rehearsal. Tomorrow I will be officiating at their ceremony. Tonight will just be a practice. They can go through a couple of trial runs tonight and then tomorrow should be "just right".

Unfortunately this will be the last practice for them. Tomorrow they will be married and each day will be the real thing. No more practicing. There is no backing up and starting any days over. Now you are thinking, "quit being a downer". No, I am a realist. Married life begins tomorrow.

But what a blessing! No more eating alone. Someone to come home to. Someone to share dreams with. If they get it right in practice, they will always remember to include the Lord in every day together. I am sure they will. That lesson learned tonight can carry them through without backing up and trying to start over. Mistakes made, are usually never really forgotten. They are just a marker for the new start. So to avoid anxiety and the need to want to start over this last practice must be perfect and then remembered.

Leviticus 26:12
'I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people.

Have a great day!

Waiting For The Caulk To Dry 7/30/2015

Good Evening,

My coffee this morning was Door County Raspberry Butter Crunch. Then I forgot my thermos filled with that tasty brew. So guess what kind of day it was?

My home internet service should be restored tomorrow. So I should be writing in the mornings once more.

Tonight my grandson and I started to tackle a chore that ended up turning out great but was a little bit of a headache to begin with. I should have started earlier but lost two sets of keys, misplaced my trusty pocket knife and so went the earlier part of the night. This evening just seemed to be an extension of the day.

We were sealing some areas of the house with new weather caulk. My son-in law sent me some super fantastic caulk that turned out great, but until we figured out that this industrial strength stuff was going to stick to anything and quick we almost glued the dog in place three times. What a night!

What started as a fiasco on steroids turned out fine, the caulk job turned out great. The keys were found as well as my pocket knife.  AFTER  WE PRAYED! Prior to the prayer I also burned the bratwursts. ARGH!!!! Lesson learned!

Philippians 4:6-7New King James Version (NKJV)
Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Sleep Well and Better Tomorrows.

When The Phone Is Dead 7/29/2015

Good Morning,

My cup is filled with Door County Red Velvet Mocha Coffee today. I need a chocolate flavor today to appease my flavor buds.

Yesterday I called home just to find out that there was an issue with our phone service. I won't mention the name of the internet and telephone provider. Our service was disconnected due to a mistake that they admitted to being their fault. Worse yet, we lost our phone number and will now be given a new one on Friday. No phone, television, or home internet, until Friday afternoon.

What we did notice however is that we did not receive any annoying telemarketer calls. We did not have the ability to watch television so we did other things. I might find out that we just don't need the services this company provides.

James 1:2-8

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[ whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

What began as a hassle just might be a blessing in disguise. This is all happening as we prepare for a short term mission trip. It seems as if Satan is trying to discourage our team.  This experience of talking on the automated customer service located somewhere in the world has taught me patience through trials.

Well off to work. Don't call me, I'll call you. LOL

Custard And Missionaries 7/28/2015

Good Morning,

The old cup is filled with Door County Jamaican Blue Mountain Blend and I am glad that it is. I am happy to be alive and hoping this day goes better than expected.

Our short term mission trip will be underway next week. Last night we held our last fund raising event at a local frozen custard business. We received a percentage of the profits for three hours. And to be very honest all we had to do was to promote the night, wipe some tables and deliver some food.

Many people from our church came and ate their supper or desserts there. We were also supported by the Christian Motorcycle Association local chapter.

It was great to see all these people support the cause of helping and underfunded senior assisted living home, where no one is turned away regardless of their ability to pay or not. I am not aware of how much money was made for the cause, but I know this. at 7:48PM everything in that crowded emporium stopped, while a few gathered around our team and prayed.  It is a scene I will never forget! No one was ashamed or shy in the public arena to be a Christian.

Romans 1:16New King James Version (NKJV)

The Just Live by Faith

16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Have a great day. Last night made my day yesterday, and today.

God bless,
Marty

Not Used To Nice! 7/27/2015

Good Morning,

How about a cheer for the weekend! Mine was blessed and busy. I had the chance to wind down last night with great conversation and a big, cold glass of lemonade. This morning starts with a cup of Door County Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti Coffee, a big salad packed for lunch, prayer and hope for tomorrow.

This weekend our church was blessed to have two of our missionaries from Brazil home for furlough. Wilson and Lori are amazing people who allow God to call on them and then be used by God for His Kingdom's work. We asked them both if they would speak in our weekend services. They graciously agreed and we were all blessed to hear what God was doing in Brazil through them. Wilson then delivered a message to all of us and it was a challenge to reach out to others by being friendly.

Now I consider myself to be fairly friendly, but I decided that God spoke through Wilson and I needed to up my game a little. Today was a friendly disaster. I left the house very early to pick up picnic supplies and greeted everyone in the grocery store with a "good morning and thank you for being here today". They looked at me like I was crazy. Later at the lakefront a young mom was struggling with three unruly kids and we couldn't help but notice as she was packing up that she needed help. Our grandson popped up and asked if he could help her carry her pile of stuff and she politely turned him down. The kids rode her hard the rest of the day. Now the other couple we were with are about two of the friendliest people you can find. We all did special little things for each other and it was very nice. We enjoyed being nice to them and I am sure they felt the same way. Strangers just aren't ready for nice, just yet!!!!

Later as I was grilling at home and two people my age were riding their bikes through the neighborhood. We still had an ice chest filled with cold bottled water and I waved and offered them two drinks. They didn't even wave back! They looked at me like I just jumped off of planet crazy.

My conclusion on this being nice thing is this. People are not used to other people being friendly anymore. It now is burned in my brain that I need to not give up and try harder. It is a crying shame that people do not know how to react to nice. We have lost the golden rule!

Luke 6:31New International Version (NIV)
31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

God bless,

Marty

In the Still Of The Night 7/26/2015

Good Morning,

I am sitting at my desk, looking out the window at a hazy morning, with the sun just starting to rise. All is quiet in the house except for the coffee pot as it brews my morning cup of Door County White Christmas Coffee. That will be the last Christmas in July cup for me. Where o where is Christmas?

Psalm 121

A song of ascents.

I lift up my eyes to the mountains—
where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.
He will not let your foot slip—
    he who watches over you will not slumber;
indeed, he who watches over Israel
    will neither slumber nor sleep.
The Lord watches over you—
    the Lord is your shade at your right hand;
the sun will not harm you by day,
    nor the moon by night.
The Lord will keep you from all harm
    he will watch over your life;
the Lord will watch over your coming and going
    both now and forevermore

Last night I went to bed early. Exhaustion took over and it was only a few seconds after my head hit the pillow that I was sound asleep. About 2 AM I awoke with my head clear and my eyes wide open. The Holy Spirit laid on my heart to pray for someone right there and now. I really don't argue with God over such matters even when it interrupts the best sleep I have had in weeks. Shortly after praying I was back asleep but knew I had spent some intense time with God. I rested knowing that despite His timing our God doesn't sleep. He is aware of where I am 24 hours a day. The experience also reminded me of a vow I had made many years ago to the Lord. "Anytime, anywhere, just call, and I will answer and go". Vows are made to be kept.

The best rest is the rest God gives after He calls and you say yes Lord.

Have a wonderful day!

Teaching The Younger Ones! 7/25/2015

Good Morning,

This morning my cup of Door County Raspberry Butter Crunch Coffee is raised in honor of some young men reaching out and teaching today other men, womwen and kids.

2 Timothy 2:2
And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.

It is always nice to see a well orchestrated team perform a task or duty. This morning our church is sponsoring a Hunters Safety Training in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Our church team is headed up by a young man and he is training others to be instructors. He has a passion for hunting, gun safety and kids.

I on the other hand as the elder over the Men's ministry like seeing our church used to provide a service and also reach out to the community. This does both. Even better, I like the fact that I can entrust the lives of others to fully capable men without worry. The biggest part that I play in this whole weekend is to bring the donuts for breakfast. I can then go home and work on a wedding message that is coming up next weekend. All will be well. This is how it supposed to go. Proud of these guys.

Have a great day. I know that I will.

Very Important Visit 7/24/2015

Good Morning,

No work for me today. I am off to the gym for a swim and then downing a big cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee. Today I will be at the airport picking up our Grandson who will be visiting for a few weeks.

Colossians 3:23New International Version (NIV)
23 Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters,

We have tried a few adventures in his short life but we will be embarking on perhaps our most important one together in a week from now. We will be going together on a short term mission trip with a team from our church. I called our daughter last night to go over some arrival details and I was quite tired. She reminded me to get rest and not feel obligated to entertain the teenage grandson to the point that I am exhausted. LOL.

I am resting up now because I plan on giving this short trip my all. I want to be exhausted from performing the Lord's work, helping others, leading the team, and setting a good example for the younger ones. If I end up beat, sore and tired,  I will say mission accomplished. If any of these kids decides to go on to more of these trips, I will say mission accomplished. If we change the course of eternal destiny or plant the seed for even one person, I will say mission accomplished.

Get some rest, I think you all need it. I know I will, and I will be happy!

Flowers, A Painting For The Soul 7/23/2015

Good Morning,

I started this day with ambitious thoughts. I hope it stays that way. My coffee is Door County Jamaican Me Crazy. I hope that doesn't describe the day.

When I came home last night I saw Rene weeding her flower garden and sniffing a few blossoms. I laughed a little when I opened the car door. She greeted me and said that when the flowers are in full bloom she actually sees the handiwork of God in their beauty. I knew right then, there would be a message in that statement somewhere for this blog. She continued to say that she wondered how after seeing beautiful flowers, anyone could deny the existence of God.

Acts 14:17 “Yet he did not leave himself without witness, for he did good by giving you rains from heaven and fruitful seasons, satisfying your hearts with food and gladness.”

God reigns supreme over all of His creation and yet those who live in willful disobedience refuse to repent and trust in Him.  He has the power of life and death
(Ecclesiastes 8:8) and knows the day that we’ll die (Hebrews 9:27).  Since you are still drawing breath, He is giving you time to repent and trust in Him because “The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance” (2 Peter 3:9) so while there is still yet time, come to Him for eternal life (John 3:16) or regret your impenitence forever (Revelation 20:12-15).

Rene doesn't say much, but when she does it pays for me to listen. She spoke a lot of wisdom last night. The least I could do is pass it on.

God bless,
Marty

Why Not Join? 7/22/2015

Good Morning,

I can hear the coffee pot brewing a hot pot of Door County Jingle Bell Java in the kitchen. I forgot to set the automatic brew last night. Argh!!! I am still celebrating Christmas in July and am looking forward to December with a long pause in October and November for a little duck hunting.

1 Corinthians 12:19-20King James Version (KJV)
19 And if they were all one member, where were the body?
20 But now are they many members, yet but one body.

I haven't spoken much about church membership, but today is the day. Many people call themselves Christian by name but won't join a good Bible believing church. They love to quote Scripture but won't practice it. They come up with all kinds of excuses, and I have heard them all as to why they won't officially join a church and get involved. They attend, but won't join. They attempt to serve but their witness is weak because, well basically they are not in line with Scripture.

The church of Jesus Christ is a body of believers working together for the good of the Kingdom of God and other believers.  Note again, it is a body of believers. Like the human body they need to be joined together. Can you imagine having your hands in your pocket, pulling them out to grip a pencil or a shovel and your fingers decided to stay in your pockets? How would you ever scratch your ear?

The eyes don't decide to work alone, they need the brain to transmit vision.  As dysfunctional as a human body would be if each part did their own thing without supporting the other parts of the body, the non church member becomes dysfunctional in their ability to join together for the good of others.

Pastors were called to shepherd a flock. A shepherd keeps the flock together, so they can be fed, safe, corrected, taught or helped.
A pastor is someone who has spiritual care over a congregation.  The English word occurs only once in the Bible in Ephesians. 4:11, “And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers.”  The word in Greek is poimen and literally means shepherd.  Poimen occurs 18 times in the New Testament.  For example,
  • Matt. 9:36, “And seeing the multitudes, He felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and downcast like sheep without a shepherd.”
  • Mark 14:27, "And Jesus *said to them, “You will all fall away, because it is written, ‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’
  • Luke 2:8, “And in the same region there were some shepherds staying out in the fields, and keeping watch over their flock by night.
  • John 10:11, “I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.”
  • Hebrews. 13:20 “Now the God of peace, who brought up from the dead the great Shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the eternal covenant, even Jesus our Lord.”
Therefore, a pastor is a shepherd of God’s flock who is to instruct, teach, and protect the people under his charge.  Pastors are elders and you are the flock.
Now for the hard statement. Choosing not to be a functional member of a Bible believing church is not Scriptural. So what are you waiting for? Prior to receiving Jesus as Lord and Savior you probably weren't a member of a church then. You now have received Jesus Christ and haven't joined a church. Makes me wonder. "If you is where you was, then maybe you ain't".

So take the plunge and do what is right.

God bless,

Marty

Inner Strength. 7/21/2015

Good Morning,

The day has begun and I look forward to seeing it through with gusto. I just poured a cup of Door County Red Velvet Mocha Coffee. I packed a lunch of nuts, mushrooms, and cheese for the day. My physician would be happy with my lunch. My stomach screams "where's the beef"?

"Inner Strength". I recently listened to the account of an American prisoner of war who was captured in Vietnam and how he and others endured  the inhumane treatment given to them at the hands of their captors. The meager portions of rice and fish guts that they ate daily were urinated on by their captors while the prisoners watched. They endured beatings and solitary confinement as well as hard labor.

I asked this man, "what kept you going"?  He replied. "All life is a gift from God, and like many gifts I have been given, I chose to make this one last as long as I could. I relied on inner strength that only God could have given me to carry on.". I replied "that is amazing". He smiled and said "I have to rely on that strength every day. I really needed it when I knew deep down inside that I would never heal unless I forgave my captors. I actually pray for them now. That was the hardest thing I ever had to do, until my son died recently. I needed that strength again." My next question was "where did you find that strength? " His answer was swift and to the point. "In God's word that I hold sacred. My captors took my Bible but God's word lived in my heart. They could not steal what I had memorized. This verse gave me inner peace and strength even during my beatings."

Philippians 4:13New International Version (NIV)
13 I can do all this through him who gives me strength.

Do you need inner strength to go on today? Call out to Jesus and know because He strengthens us you will make it through.

God bless,

Marty

Thought For Monday 7/20/2015

Good Morning,

I am a little sore and sleep escaped me last night. The old football knee is really acting up and has thrown my whole body out of synch. My coffee is Door County Coconut Crush to wash down the ibuprofen.

As we age, all of the fun of our youth seems to catch up with us in the form of aches and pains. I have prayed about this one and am seeking medical attention. I find this injury somewhat peculiar as it comes right before I launch into a mission trip where my legs are needed. So as I pray and rest my leg one verse comes to mind that I would like to share for others riding in the same boat.

2 Corinthians 12:9-10 New King James Version (NKJV)
And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore most gladly I will rather boast in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in needs, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

This verse needs to carry us through one day at a time.

God bless,
Marty

In The Quiet Of The Den 7/19/2015

Good Morning,

I am moving pretty slow this morning. It seems as if this left knee of mine just wants to be pampered today. My coffee mug has my picture on it. It is a photo someone took when I was little boy. It is filled with Door County Jamaican Blue Mountain Blend Coffee. I wonder if that little boy in that picture ever thought that he would be considered a relic?

I write this daily blog about 90% of the time from my den. I like to go outside and write from the back yard quite often, but today is too damp to do so. In my den I have a desk, our computer, and many dead animals, stuffed and mounted on the wall. I am surrounded by books, paintings, and photographs of friends and family. There are my guns and knives all locked up and a few hats adorning the area where I write to you. You could say that it is my own personal museum. Rene spends very little time up here. So I guess "there's no place like this place, anywhere near this place, so this must be my place."

What makes this place of mine the best is that it is quiet and I can gather my thoughts, feed my soul, and pray for others and myself usually without interruption.  The other things this den has held over the years are words from God, words to you and occasional tears for myself or others. It has bottled up within it's walls an emporium of different emotions. Peace, love, joy, anger, grief, and fear all have visited here.

Why am I sharing this story about a den with you? Because anywhere, somewhere, needs to be a place where you can go just to escape from the world for a little while and leave feeling better. It needs to be a place that you can go to daily. It might be the kitchen table, a spot under a tree, the bathroom, who knows where, but you need a place like that, Some use the public library or the local coffee house. Some go to mountain tops, my knee won't let me do that. But you need a place!

My friends, what good is having a place to go if you don't go there? Good intentions and a decorated room are useless if not used. God isn't within good intentions. He desires to meet, listen, speak, console, correct, love, discipline, teach, encourage anywhere. You just have to give Him the time.

Romans 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world,  but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

So what do you say? Can you find a place to go where your mind, heart and soul can be renewed?  Will you dedicate time to God in that place?

Tomorrow we will talk about church membership.

Enjoy your day. You all made mine!

Marty

Words Aren't Always Needed 7/18/2015

Good Morning,

Drinking a little Door County White Christmas Coffee to start the day, then it's off to two ministry events. Definitely a lot busier that I wanted to be. Some how with the scheduling we packed two into one day.

This week my good buddy lost his mother to a stroke. Normally he is with me for these two events and can't be today. It is totally understandable. We do a lot of things together especially in ministry. No one works harder than him. Sometimes even when things aren't going right we can encourage each other and keep moving. Last night I visited my friend and there was hurt in his eyes. He bears up very well and is as tough as nails. We didn't say much to each other but we definitely knew what each of us was thinking. No matter what we were going to say, it was understood that I hurt with him.

Proverbs 18:24New King James Version (NKJV)
24 A man who has friends must himself be friendly,
But there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother

As many are preparing for a clay target shooting event this morning, and fireworks tonight, my mind is on the one who hurts and to be truthful, my mind is miles away. I know his prayers are with me and he knows my prayers are with him. To be honest I would rather be drinking coffee with him and munching on some pastry than doing all the activities of this morning. But my friend would push me on and I would do the same for him. He would expect me to move ahead with these events. Tonight will be a first in many years that we are not serving together. I know exactly what he would say to me. I pasted the verse below.

Luke 9:62New King James Version (NKJV)
62 But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.”

So have a day that honors God despite circumstances.

Cutting Through Like Butter 7/17/2015

Good Morning,

My day has begun with a hot cup of Door County Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti Coffee, prayer, Bible study and an agenda for making it through the day on time, every time.

Hebrews 4:12New King James Version (NKJV)
12 For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

The picture above is that of an antique butter cutter. Rene and I have a few butter molds also. I still use this to serve butter slices when we entertain from time to time. The wires within the cutter slide right through butter, making perfectly matching slices each time.

I believe that many Christians rely on their own words when encouraging, comforting, correcting, instructing or witnessing to others. Now, you do need to engage in conversation to do all of the above. But what we neglect is to leave the person we are working with a passage from God's word. This is a lot like taking an aspirin when a stronger pain killer is really needed. The aspirin does some good but not enough.

The reasons that many Christians do not pass on the Word of God is that they have not prepared to engage others with the Word by knowing Scriptures to use. They haven't memorized the Word either.

Our words, although very good and needed do not have the same impact as the Word of God. The Word of God penetrates like no other and does not turn back.

The best book for "chicken soup for the soul" is the Bible. Dust it off. It is just waiting there for you and has a great treasure within to be mined and shared.

Have a great day,

Marty

The Cake Top 7/16/2015

Good Morning,

Thursday it is! God served up another day for us to be blessings to others. How is that working for you? My mug is filled with Door County Raspberry Crunch Coffee.

Matthew 5:13-16

13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.
14 Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.
15 Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

The picture above is the top from our wedding cake. It wasn't one we purchased, but one we made. A few friends helped us along the way. Despite it being a little untraditional you knew that the cake was definitely a wedding cake. Without the cake top, the cake really could have been for anything.

Christians have the indwelling of the Holy Spirit that leads us into all truth. Christians also have the assurance of an eternal life in heaven through Jesus Christ. This should stand out and be noticeable to the rest of the world. The light within is the Holy Spirit who is always working to lead others to Jesus. Yet, many times it is hard to see this blessed assurance in Christians because we let the world swallow up our joy and we walk through life like everyone else not shining with our blessed assurance showing. It is sometimes very hard to spot Christians in the middle of a group because we have chosen the back wall to hide or avoid telling others where they can find a relationship with Jesus. Our lights don't shine and we are like cakes without tops. Good on the outside but without a purpose statement.

So today let the love of Jesus shine from you to others. Make a difference in their life. Let them see the cake top and start to desire the filling!

Have a cake kind of day.

Marty

Fighting The Fight 7/15/2015

Good Morning,

Have you ever woke up and felt like you haven't slept, even though you did?  My cup is filled with Door County Highlander Grog Coffee. It's on days like those that the coffee not only tastes good but is medicinal.

2 Timothy 4:7New King James Version (NKJV)
I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

I have often studied the passage above and wondered how it applied . What is a good fight? I have been in a few physical fights in my day and a few spiritual battles also. But what makes it a good fight?
A good fighter does not know the words "I quit". A good fighter knows that a fight will probably hurt but yet sees a need to go and fight. A good fighter knows how to protect himself to avoid cheap shots that can cripple. A good fighter prepares for the fight. A good fighter never underestimates his opponent. A good fighter can take a hit and get back up swinging.

I finished the race. In order to run in a race a person needs to know the rules. In order to not be disqualified the runner must follow the rules all the way, right to the finish line.

I kept the faith. The runner/fighter knows God loves him or her so much that He sent His Only Son to die for him or her. That faith in Jesus Christ as Savior carries the fighter/runner to the end. It is this faith that pushes many to persevere despite circumstances.

Are you in the fight? Are you running the race? Are you keeping the faith? If not, you are probably just on the sidelines cheering for others or taking shots at those who passed you by.

Run, fight and keep the faith.

Pool Therapy 7/13/2015

Good Morning,

Monday arrived, I prayed it wouldn't, but such a foolish prayer should always be answered with a NO! I just had a great time with my weekend that I did not want it to end. So I raise my cup filled with Door County Raspberry Butter Crunch Coffee and salute Monday. It only leads to Friday!!!

On hot days when the temperature is too warm for the dogs we will take them for a swim in the local river or a pond. To get a small puppy used to water we used a small pool for him to jump in and out of. This also worked well to cool off our older dog when swimming became a little tough on him. They loved just laying in the cool water . The younger one liked biting the hose. We had to replace it the following year. There were many times that Rene and I sat near the pool and watched those two go in and out of the water. Often next to our chairs would be a cold glass of iced tea or Diet Dr. Pepper for her. Those times were most relaxing and were an excellent "wind down" from hectic days.

Psalm 23:2-3New King James Version (NKJV)
He makes me to lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside the still waters.
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name’s sake.

Friends, have you taken time to slow down lately and let God lead you to a place of rest and therapy for the soul, heart and mind? Have you spent time reflecting on His love for you, feeding on His Word, or allowing Him to lead each day?

You might not believe this but you are worth it to Him and to those around you. Take an hour and spend it beside the still waters of His love. You will find that once you do, you will visit that pool more often.

Love to all,

Marty

The Right Kind Of Friends 7/14/2015

Good Morning,

The coffee pot just finished brewing some delicious Door County Coconut Crush java. My day has begun with a prayer for my friends. My mind went back to last Sunday when a few of us got together and practiced shooting at flying clay targets so we can compete twice this next weekend.

I tend to hunt, pray and hang out with some good guys. They are all solid men who are honest and trustworthy. Once in awhile we mix in a lady or two as we are not unwilling to share our outings with the opposite gender. I have been blessed to have good men around me and that makes it easier for all of us to behave. It is a great accountability group.

Psalm 1:1-4
Oh, the joys of those who do not follow evil men’s advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at the things of God. But they delight in doing everything God wants them to, and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to follow him more closely.
They are like trees along a riverbank bearing luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and all they do shall prosper.
But for sinners, what a different story! They blow away like chaff before the wind. They are not safe on Judgment Day; they shall not stand among the godly.

I look forward to spending time with these guys and eating wild game together. There is nothing like hanging with the right kind of friends. These are just a few of the many good men who have had a good influence on my life.

Choose your friends wisely.

Have a great day,

Marty

The Good Old Days Of Voices 7/12/2014

Good Morning,

This day has started bright and sunny. I was up very early and busy as usual. From where I am writing in the den I can smell the herbed chicken baking. My goal is to make a cold chicken salad for supper tonight. I just poured myself a cup Of Door County Jamaican Blue Mountain Blend Coffee. This one is very robust in flavor and is just what I needed to kick start this day. The picture below is one I took of a couple of old telephones that my wife has collected. We have actually had kids into our home that asked us to explain how they work. I laugh and tell them that those were the first cellular phones, but they were hard to wear on your belt or too heavy for purses. One kid still believes that they doubled as a conceal carry weapon. Argh!!!! They didn't fall for "the only way Adam and Eve could call for a pizza though.

Jeremiah 33:3New Living Translation (NLT)
Ask me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come.

I don't know about you but I am old school. Todays versions of communication just about drive me on a short trip to insane. You call for service on anything or information and you are prompted to punch in numbers like 1 for a directory of languages to choose from, 2 for a directory of names, 3 for a call back, 4 if you want to wait 3 hours for someone to talk with you, and 5 if you want them to send Jimmy Johns with a sandwich while you wait. Then they just direct you to a computer and tell you to solve all your problems online, when it was the computer being broke that you were calling about.

Then the latest craze that needs to go is letting your fingers, especially your thumbs talk for you. It is hilarious watching two people text each other from across the room. Get up and walk your under exercised butt over the ten feet and talk. Texting is so impersonal, or instant messaging with abbreviations. It took me two years to figure out what LOL meant,  still trying to figure out IDK, I still don't know and don't care. TBT, BFF, now we speak in code. I hope I am already in heaven if God starts texting in code. I am pretty sure He won't. Not saying He couldn't but I have my doubts that He will send me a text with IDK.

There is nothing like hearing the voice of a loved one. We often hide behind text messages and emails and rob each other of the voice that is more of an emotional experience. I do save some cards and letters that have been written to me from time to time as treasures, but truly enjoy listening to a voice on the other end.

You know, God still speaks, and desires to answer us. We need to listen and we need to speak back.

1 Kings 19:11-13Living Bible (TLB)
11 “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him. And as Elijah stood there the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain; it was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his scarf and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.
And a voice said, “Why are you here, Elijah?”

Are you accessible to friends and family? Can it be more than a texting and email? Do you take time to listen to God and call on Him through prayer? Or have you put Him on hold? Does He have to go through layers and filters to reach you? When He does call on you do you answer IDK, NRN, ?

Have a great day! Call someone, it might make their whole day and yours better. If you have to go high tech do a video conference , but don't talk with your thumbs while doing it.

God bless,

Marty

Heather, Paul, And The Gift 7/11/2015

Good Morning,

The sun has come up and our neighborhood is just about as silent as it would be on a below zero morning in January. It looks to be a grand day, with hotter temperatures and later tonight some much needed rain.  I am draining the cup dry of my Door County Cinnamon Sugar Biscotti Coffee. There will be two cups today in my future.

Song of Solomon 8:6-7New Living Translation (NLT)
Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm.
For love is as strong as death,
its jealousy as enduring as the grave.
Love flashes like fire,
    the brightest kind of flame.
Many waters cannot quench love,
    nor can rivers drown it.
If a man tried to buy love
    with all his wealth,
his offer would be utterly scorned.

Later today I will be attending the wedding of two friends. I have been praying for this day a long time. I thank God that two nice people have found each other and have decided to share their lives with one another.

Weddings usually are a day when those celebrating with the couple bring gifts to them. We will be doing that today as well as many other people will do. But the two most important gifts given today were already given.

The first gift was given by God. He made two individuals and placed them on the Earth. He gave to both of them the ability to love others. He then orchestrated a path that would have Heather and Paul meet. The ability to share love then took over. Today they celebrate that gift of being able to love others.

The second gift that was given was a choice that Heather and Paul made before announcing their wedding day. They chose to share their individual lives with one another on this day. Not out of need, mind you, but a choice to be together in good and in bad. To choose to share your life with another person is perhaps the greatest gift you can give. To choose to share your life out of love is even greater.

People marry for many reasons. Infatuation, need, desperation, greed, lust and loneliness could be some factors, I am afraid for many marriages. But the choice to love and share your life is the best reason.

This marriage will survive because of that choice and their faith based on God being the head of the marriage.

There are many weddings that I get dragged to and I sit there praying more than enjoying the day because I see the reasons for the wedding and the lack of God  and love as the foundation.

But today I attend with joy. I will still pray for Heather and Paul, but my prayer will be different. It will be a prayer of happiness thanking God for putting two people in the right place at the right time who will love Him first and each other second. Their love for each other will grow even more than what they know of today. This is a happy day!

God bless,

Sad Movies Always Make Me Cry 7/10/2015

Good Morning,

I want to give a shout out for the upcoming weekend. Woot woot! Rene and I will be partaking in some Bastille Days Festivities in Down Town Milwaukee. Then in just a couple of weeks Festa Italiana comes to town. Lots to look forward to. My Friday cup of coffee is Door County Red Velvet Mocha.

Colossians 3:12New International Version (NIV)
12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

One of the things I love about my wife is her compassion and heart for the hurting. We can't watch a sad movie without her eyes filling with tears. On the other hand she also cries when watching a war veteran come home and reunite with their family. She tears up when a new puppy comes home to live with us or when she has to say the final goodbye to our faithful pet.

As for me I subscribe to the theory that "real men don't cry". I can watch a real sad movie or be touched by a beautiful story without crying. What saves me from crying is how my convenient hay fever allergy kicks in and so the only tears I shed are from allergies. Real men don't cry. They have hay fever attacks.

A young man asked me this week what originally attracted me to my wife. I replied that I witnessed in her a lot of compassion for people. We used to work together at the hospital and many times I saw her hold a patients hand who was scared or worried.

Then we went to see a movie and it was somewhat sad. I saw a tear roll down her face during the saddest part.  No don't get me wrong, she can be as tough as nails. But she has compassion and that is what attracted me to her and still does.

How would you rate yourself in the compassion area? Does your compassion move you to tears and then action? When we become aware of a need that we can assist with Rene is usually the first to do something about it.

Young men, if you are looking for wife material, look for one with compassion.

Have a beautiful day.

The Apple Of His Eye 7/9/2015

Good Morning,

There is nothing like waking up to smell the Door County Blueberry Cobbler Coffee brewing like an old steam locomotive in the coffee pot. The house smells great, there is a little spring in my step after a good night of rest and I believe there is a smile on the dog!

Psalm 17:6-9

I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God;
Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech.
Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand,
O You who save those who trust in You
From those who rise up against them.
Keep me as the apple of Your eye;
Hide me under the shadow of Your wings,
From the wicked who oppress me,
From my deadly enemies who surround me

Have you ever thought of yourself as the "apple of God's eye"? Probably not. But God sees you that way. Like a mother who runs to the crib at the first sound of a baby throwing up, God dotes on us and is willing to carry us through life's battles. How do I know that He dotes on us.? He desires to spend eternity with each of us. He sent His son Jesus to pay our way through the atonement of our sins, with His death, burial, and resurrection. Now that's real love. A love that desires for it to last forever.

That makes me smile and be humble at the same time, knowing that I am loved enough, that someone died for me. If that isn't love than the world isn't round and the oceans all are dry.

So go out and face the day with the assurance that you are loved beyond measure.

God bless,
Marty

Good Morning Lord! 7/8/2015

Good Morning,

My day was long yesterday and today might be the same. So I pray for strength and for my Door County Peanut Butter Crunch Coffee to last a little longer than yesterday.

I decided to pen a prayer to God today.

Dear Father In Heaven,

Good morning,

I come before you a humble sinner in need of forgiveness as always. I thank you for my family and friends. I lift up the ones who are physically ill and in need of healing. I want to ask for spiritual healing for those who are struggling with issues of the heart. I thank you for your daily provisions given to me. I pray for world peace and for my enemies. I ask for your wisdom in dealing with those who don't care for me. So much to pray for Dear God and You have heard it all before. But have I told you lately that I love you? Because I do.

Matthew 22:37
And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.

Enough said for this morning. Have you told God that you love Him? I am sure He would love to hear from you.

God bless,
Marty

Time For Root Beer Floats 7/7/2015

Good Morning,

I did not make it home from work until pretty late last night. I missed the best part of my day. I did not get a to spend anytime with the Mrs. She was in bed and asleep when I made it home from work.
So all being said, I am in pretty good shape for considering how long the day was.  I will coffee up with some Door County Raspberry Butter Crunch and set my sights on another day.

When I was in high school one of my favorite places to hang out was at the local root beer stand. They still had car hops that waited on us as we sat in our hot rods looking cool. I think I liked that place the best because of one particular cute car hop who delivered a mean root beer float. But that subject is best left in the pages of my dull memory bank.

When Rene and I are vacationing or just plain old spending time together we will often stop for ice cream and I will usually order a root beer float. She has a scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with pecans. We talk and make plans for the day or the next day. The time is spent talking and enjoying each other's company.

Whenever I notice that we seem to be short tempered with each other and the stress of living with me gets the best of her, I know it is time for ice cream. The beginning of a conflict is a cue to slow down, relax, and admit that whatever was going wrong is just not worth getting stressed about. Time outs work not only with children but even better with adults.

Proverbs 27:9
“The heartfelt counsel of a friend
is as sweet as perfume and incense.”

I believe if adults would take a time out sit down to ice cream and talk things over we would solve half of the world's conflicts.

Are you having issues with someone else? Take a time out and just plan a time of fellowship together. You might find that whatever the issue was, isn't really an issue.

Have an ice cream kind of day.

He Makes The Stars Fall On Cue. 7/6/2015

Good Morning,

Cheerios and a banana washed down with a cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee, Bible time and some prayer has set this day in motion for me.

Have you ever witnessed a falling star coming down from the heavens? I had that distinct pleasure a few times so far in my life span. Just to fathom that God knows where He hung each star and when He wants it to fall is mind boggling. If you have witnessed a falling star, God also knew that you saw it. He put it in motion for those He wanted to witness it.

This may not come as a surprise to you, but God is speaking to you right now. Maybe not in the same way He did when He spoke creation into existence. Or when He instructed his disciples on the hillside. But let me assure you, His voice still goes forth.
All you have to do is look up, look down, and look in. Look up. God is speaking to you through the inspiration in His creation. Look down. Read and meditate upon the words of instruction He has given through His word. Look in. Allow your heart, your soul, and your mind to be illumined by His Spirit.

Jeremiah 31:35
35 Thus says the Lord,
Who gives the sun for a light by day,
The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,
Who disturbs the sea,
And its waves roar

Have a great day. Seek God and you will find Him.

Mindset and Pork Loins 7/5/2015

Good Morning,

As I sit down to write this morning, I am enjoying a cup of Door County White Christmas Coffee. I am celebrating Christmas in July. No shopping, no presents, and no Christmas tree, just enjoying the thoughts of peace, love and joy. Those thoughts come from above.

Yesterday I started the process of smoking some pork loins, by mixing a marinade and basting the loins before refrigerating them for 24 hours. About three hours ago I started the smoking process in the dark of the morning with my trusty sidekick Gibbs and a cup of Christmas coffee.

Before the pork loins could go into the smoker I had prayer and some time was spent reading God's word. You see before I can face most days I have to make sure that my mind is in the right place. I do most of the preaching for our church's Saturday evening services. So, unless I miss Saturday's service or am needed on Sunday for some reason, I pretty much stay home and have my Sunday time with my wife or by myself. She works weekends at the medical center so she attends on Saturday nights with me. God before pork! In order to get my mind set on above I had to set my alarm clock for an early wake up. My time with in prayer and visiting with God was awesome.

Today I was filled with joy when a friend called at 6AM to explain that he would not be meeting me for some clay target practice. He missed church last night and our church went to one later service today with a picnic. This would not allow him the time to go and practice. He had to choose. He chose to go to church and not go shooting. This tells me he has the right mindset. The Lord comes first! God is number one in his life. This fella has had some tough times this last year and it seems that life sucker punches him too often. But he always finds some joy in the circumstances. He always serves the Lord with gladness.

How does he do it? How does he have the right "mindset' despite circumstances? How does church come before a morning out with the boys?

Ephesians 4:21-24New King James Version (NKJV)
21 if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: 22 that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

Romans 12:1-2New King James Version (NKJV)

12 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God

These two Bible passages explain the "right mindset". My friend loves the Lord. God comes first in all things despite the circumstances. He does not struggle with choices. His body will honor the Lord in service. How does he and I renew our minds. Time spent with the Lord, learning to understand His ways, our weaknesses, and relying on Him to assist us through days when life is tough. Prayer, fasting and Bible reading are the key elements.

Romans 8:31New King James Version (NKJV)

31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

Isaiah 40:30-31New King James Version (NKJV)
30 Even the youths shall faint and be weary,
And the young men shall utterly fall,
31 But those who wait on the Lord
Shall renew their strength;
They shall mount up with wings like eagles,
They shall run and not be weary,
They shall walk and not faint.

Why did I write this today? God told me to. I know there are others out and about today without purpose, struggling with life.  It is an attempt to reach those who are just thinking that life is not fair and need a push toward God.  Nothing else, but God carries us. Not hobbies, not the opposite sex, not money, nor will good times have the power to sustain us in our journey through life. These are all vapor and disappear with the wind. But God is faithful.

Have a blessed day and think this one over.

No! Never Alone, Never Alone. July 4th 2015

Good Morning,

My mug is steaming hot this morning. It is filled with Door County Almond Toffee Coffee. This is a new flavor for me to try. The jury is still out on this one. I see this as more of a December type coffee for me.

Loneliness is a disease of the heart. And it is well known that the heart is the source of life flow through the body. My metaphor this morning is this. The heart is a body organ but we all refer to it as where our love or hatred is held. Both come from our souls within. So for today, hang with me and let's pretend that our heart can be diseased by emotions.

Once a heart is diseased it becomes lazy or restricted in its ability to pump the life blood through our arteries. A heart needs exercise and the right diet to stay healthy.

A hear that suffers from the disease of loneliness is one that is undernourished and lacks exercise. As with many heart diseases medication is available for help, but medication should be the last resort. Many heart diseases are irreversible. Loneliness is not. It can be cured.

You are as ill as you choose to be. Do you wait to be called or do you call someone? Do you stay at home or venture out? Do you spend time in prayer throughout the day with God?  He is available 24 hours a day. Do you read your Bible and let Him speak to you? Do you know that you are a treasure chest of love that you can share with others? You have the ability to make people happy by just being there for them.

The signs of loneliness setting in are .
1. You become unapproachable.
2. Your chair is your best friend.
3. Sleep is your daily date.
4. You can't sleep at night.
5. Food is nothing to get excited about.
6. You end up liking to be alone.
7. You can't function with others.
8. No one wants to be around you.

If you have these symptoms you are in danger of becoming a dinosaur and extinction is inevitable. You will be rarely seen and people will forget that you exist.

God doesn't forget you. He knows what you are doing, at all times. He created us to be social beings in need of each other. He is the best place to start to warm your heart and prepare you to get back into the world He created for you.

Once He warms your heart get out there and greet the world and all it has to offer. Get involved in and organization or cause. Offer your talents and gifts to others in need.

Everyone struggles with loneliness at some point. Whether you are going through something hard that you don't think anyone else understands or you are facing a change in life where you just feel alone, God's Word provides hope and strength. There is someone who is closer than a brother and is always with You - Jesus Christ is our friend and comforter!

Deuteronomy 31:6New International Version (NIV)
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

There are lots of parades today in the United States. There are good things happening all over the world. Telephones and email are all working. Don't wait for a call, make one.

You are as lonely as you choose to be. A good time is only a prayer away.

God bless,

Marty

S'mores 7/3/2015

Good Morning,

I can't wait to get this work day started. It's only going to be a half of a day to work. So let the weekend begin. My Coffee this morning is Door County Red Velvet Mocha.

Last night we had our windows open and there was a distinct sweet smoky smell coming from our neighbors yard. They had a few friends and family over for a bonfire and S'mores.

A s'more is a traditional night time campfire treat popular in the United States, and more recently, Canada, consisting of a roasted marshmallow and a layer of chocolate sandwiched between two pieces of graham cracker.

A s'more just seems to go with night time, bonfires and friends.  Three great ingredients, sandwiched together makes a heavenly sandwich of goo and sugar.

2. Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 So I concluded there is nothing better than to be happy and enjoy ourselves as long as we can. And people should eat and drink and enjoy the fruits of their labor, for these are gifts from God.
3. Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For who can eat or enjoy anything apart from him?

So be a kid and enjoy a treat. All good things came from God.

Have a great day.

Playing Doctor 7/2/2015

Good Morning,

My cup overflows with Door County Red Velvet Mocha Coffee.

Many little children amuse themselves by playing doctor. Today I am going to play doctor and write a prescription for us.

One day of prayer with plenty of Bible reading is the cure for any ailing ego, bruised heart, or angry mind,

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18English Standard Version (ESV)
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

Have a healthy day. take two more as needed.

Is It Christmas Yet? 7/1/2015

Good Morning,

I am happy to say that I am breaking out my July supply of Door County White Christmas Coffee. Only six months until Christmas!!!!!
Have you ever wondered why people call you on the telephone? I am not talking about sales people, politicians, or survey takers. I am talking about friends or relatives. Here's the answer. They call because they want to talk to you. They call because they care enough to share part of their God given day with you. Or it could be that they value your thoughts and just need to talk? Or they are led by the Holy Spirit to call on you and check your condition in life. I have noticed this though, during  my many years on this Earth, sometimes the call comes when it is the least convenient for you. You need to put others first.

I heard someone say once that they were lonely. I noticed that when I called them I always felt as if I had to apologize because I called. So I quit calling and then I heard that they were lonely.

Here is a simple math equation. You are as friendly as you choose to be. In turn you are as lonely as you choose to be. You are in control of your own loneliness meter. In order to be a friend and to be befriended you need to be approachable and ready to be friendly.

The Bible has much to say about friendship. I have attached some great Bible verses below. Use them as a test to see what kind of friend you are.

John 15:12-15 “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.

Greatest Friend is God

James 4:8 Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.

How To Pick Your Friends

Proverbs 12:26 One who is righteous is a guide to his neighbor, but the way of the wicked leads them astray.
Proverbs 13:20 Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Proverbs 14:6-7 A scoffer seeks wisdom in vain, but knowledge is easy for a man of understanding. Leave the presence of a fool, for there you do not meet words of knowledge.
Proverbs 22:24-25 Make no friendship with a man given to anger, nor go with a wrathful man, lest you learn his ways and entangle yourself in a snare.
1 Corinthians 15:33 Do not be deceived: “Bad company ruins good morals.”

How To Treat Your Friends

Luke 6:31 And as you wish that others would do to you, do so to them.

Colossians 3:12-14 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.

Go ahead, be a great friend.
