Fertilizer for the Soul 9/30/13

Good Morning,

Today is Monday. What will the week bring? But here's a chance to start the day by spending some time in the Word of God and prayer. My day is also starting with a hot cup of Door County Cherry Crème Coffee.

Yesterday I spent some time aerating our lawn and applying the winter fertilizer. Summer has passed and fall is here. Soon we will be blanketed with snow and ice. But I prepared the lawn for next spring and as it goes dormant it will be fed and come alive in the spring.

The Holy Spirit was sent to Comfort and feed us spiritually. And if we apply Him to our lives we can grow and nurture others. We can be islands of encouragement and hope for others in through Jesus in us.
Isaiah 55:10-13
10 As the rain and the snow
    come down from heaven,
and do not return to it
    without watering the earth
and making it bud and flourish,
    so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater,
11 so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
    It will not return to me empty,
but will accomplish what I desire
    and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.
12 You will go out in joy
    and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills
    will burst into song before you,
and all the trees of the field
    will clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn bush will grow the juniper,

Are you being constantly fed by the Holy Spirit through God's Word?
Are you risking going dormant and allowing the weeds of sin to creep in?

Surprise Visitor 9/29/13

Good Morning,

Not hunting this morning. Not too unusual for opening weekend. I will go for and evening hunt tonight. I am starting today with some sweet Door County Chocolate Melt Down Coffee.

Last night at our Saturday Evening Church Service a visitor arrived. Attendance was down due to a big wedding within the church family. So it was nice to add a another number to the group. I would like to thank the visitor who had come home from Alaska for family reasons but stopped in at our church to say hi. You see Bob (visitor ) and I went to the same high school a thousand years ago. I can't even say if we had classes together or not. Some how and it escapes me now, but Bob looked me up on the Internet and saw that I professed to be a Christian. I received a phone call a few years ago from Alaska and we connected. Bob was checking to see if I was really a Christian. Since then he has taken every opportunity to encourage me through email and phone calls to keep "going and not quit" in my ministry. I must confess that there are times that I wonder if all the work is worth it. I have been discouraged from time to time. Bob is in tune with the Holy Spirit and Bango! a phone call or email comes saying "Don't Quit".

I want to publicly thank Bob for being a stand up man of prayer and support for me and others. What he does, he doesn't have to do. He goes that extra mile. Do you go an extra mile for someone in ministry? Do you compliment your pastor and thank him for the message? Do you send your missionaries an encouraging email or note and brighten their day? Do you thank those in lay ministries such as nursery duty, janitorial, teen workers, children's leaders and Sunday School teachers? Do you pray for all of them?

You might be just the person that stops them from quitting when the hours are long and the fruit is far and few between. Stop today, and write a note, send and email, pray for your ministry leaders, professional or volunteer.

So as I close let me tell you how I feel about all of you in the Words of Paul to the Philippians in chapter one. It is important to know that all of you are loved and for me to encourage you too.

Thanksgiving and Prayer Philippians 1:3-11

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
It is right for me to feel this way about all of you, since I have you in my heart and, whether I am in chains or defending and confirming the gospel, all of you share in God’s grace with me. God can testify how I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus.
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, 10 so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, 11 filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.

Duck Season in Wisconsin 9/28/13

Good Morning,

Greetings to you all. My coffee this morning is Door County Apple Cobbler. I am headed off to the swamp with my shot gun, decoys, duck calls, ammo, dog, nephew and a buddy. My thermos is full and I have a Genoa salami sandwich for lunch, with a side of Oreos. It doesn't get much better than this. Our hopes are high. Duck Season. It's what I have been waiting for all year. By the way if my Doctor reads this. I will be walking about three miles loaded down with all my stuff. That's the cardio work out. One Lipitor will offset the salami and I will need the sugar from the Oreos for energy.



How do I make a devotional out of this? Well I won't but God will. I spent a good part of the week getting prepared for today. Not one thing was missed. I am ready to go! And go we will.

Are you prepared to leave this world? A good duck hunter is prepared at all times to go hunting. It usually does not take a duck hunter  long to get ready and go.

But what about you? My buddies will call and say that they heard a weather front is coming through and we should hunt. I am ready and I go.

What if God were to call your number due? What if tomorrow was your last breath? Are you ready?


1. God loves you and has a plan for you!
The Bible says, “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, [Jesus Christ], that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life” (John 3:16).
Jesus said, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” — a complete life full of purpose (John 10:10).
But here’s the problem:
2. Man is sinful and separated from God.
We have all done, thought or said bad things, which the Bible calls “sin.” The Bible says, “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
The result of sin is death, spiritual separation from God (Romans 6:23).
The good news?
3. God sent His Son to die for your sins!
Jesus died in our place so we could live with Him in eternity.
“God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
But it didn’t end with His death on the cross. He rose again and still lives!
“Christ died for our sins. … He was buried. … He was raised on the third day, according to the Scriptures.” (1 Corinthians 15:3-4).
Jesus is the only way to God.
Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14:6).
4. Would you like to receive God’s forgiveness?
We can’t earn salvation; we are saved by God’s grace when we have faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. All you have to do is believe you are a sinner, that Christ died for your sins, and ask His forgiveness. He knows you and loves you. What matters to Him is the attitude of your heart, your honesty. We suggest praying the following prayer to accept Christ as your Savior:
“Dear Lord Jesus,
I know I am a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe you died for my sins and rose from the dead.  I trust and follow you as my Lord and Savior. Guide my life and help me to do your will.
In your name, amen.”
Did you pray this prayer?

If not and you reject Jesus as Lord and Savior, you are not ready to go. If you die you will spend eternity in hell separated from God.

Happy Anniversary 9/27/13

Good Morning,

Friday at last. My coffee this morning will be Door County Cherry Crème.

Today is our wedding anniversary. I thought I would share with you the verse that we had written on our wedding invitations. It has come to be a way of life.

Ruth 1:16-17
“Entreat me not to leave you,
Or to turn back from following after you;
For wherever you go, I will go;
And wherever you lodge, I will lodge;
Your people shall be my people,
And your God, my God.
17 Where you die, I will die,
And there will I be buried.
The Lord do so to me, and more also,
If anything but death parts you and me.”
 
I can honestly say that the two of us have lived this verse and I can speak for both of us and say we intend on living this one until the end. We have had our ups and downs like every couple, but the ups outweigh the downs. When one cries the other can taste the salt of the tears. But if you ask us individually what held us together and what continues to hold us, is our God. To Him be the credit and glory.
 
Our prayer today for all of you is that you can find happiness in God being your God.

Wittenberg Wieners and Family Dinners 9/26/13

Good Morning,

Thursday morning and I am starting to smell the weekend. My coffee today is Door County Chocolate Meltdown.

I often write about family dinners of the past. Today I want to talk about family dinners present and future. This coming Sunday the Mrs. and I have invited my brother and his family over for lunch. We will be having some Wittenberg Wieners from Nueskes a Wisconsin provider of sausages and smoke meats. www.nueskes.com There will be a side of tortilla chips and fresh salsa. I am not sure what else will be there but what is important is that we will all be together. The lunch is not a huge expense and is not the greatest dinner that we have shared together. But again we will all be together. You see things do not need to always be a pain or elaborate to be good.

I enjoy my brother and his family. We have shared many good times together and have carried each other through bad times.

I am looking forward to it.

Lack of Support the Last of the Dream Killers 9/25/13

Good Morning and God Bless,

Today finds me starting the morning with a hot cup of Door County Coconut Crush Coffee.

Many a good man or woman hears a call from God and expresses to his family, friends, or church what God has called him or her to do. Opinions are like noses, everyone has one. Many a good man or woman will also quit before even getting started because of lack of support. I am not just talking about financial support but emotional support, material support, prayer support and just plain old friendship. Many people are discouraged by their closest loved ones or even their church. Oh they all mean well. I found myself doing this once. A close friend of mine told me that she was called to missions in Yemen. I told her to reconsider and think it through. "That's not an easy region to be a missionary". Fortunately she did not listen to me. When she would come home for visits and we would meet I noticed that I had never seen her more alive. She would tell of hiding Bibles under her skirt and how many children relied on her to love them. Her eyes twinkled with excitement. But I would have had her stay home. God called her home to be with Him and her eulogy confirmed for me to fulfill my calling to short term mission trips as a leader. Her life spent as God desired had a huge impact on many.
We need to encourage one another to listen for God and obey. Give each other support not discouragement.

1 Thessalonians 5:11
Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.
Romans 12:13
Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality.
Acts 15:32
Judas and Silas, who themselves were prophets, said much to encourage and strengthen the brothers.
Hebrews 10:25
Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

You never know. The life others impact might be yours.

Fear the Other Dream Killer 9/24/13

Good Morning,

Does it feel like morning yet? Not to me. Maybe after this first cup of Door County Cherry Crème Coffee I will concede to it being morning.

Fear is another weapon that Satan uses to kill the dreams of Christians. Fear paralyzes many from committing to stepping up and out with their faith. Fear also comes in disguises. It comes in the disguise of excuses. "I am too old. I can't afford it. I don't have the education. Now is not a good time." Satan is happy to have us live a life that does not have a positive impact on God's Kingdom.
Fear robs us of seeing God at work and experiencing Him in ways we cannot imagine.

The Bible has much to say about fear and our need and ability to conquer it with God.

NKJV)
Joshua 1:3-9
I promise you what I promised Moses: ‘Wherever you set foot, you will be on land I have given you ... No one will be able to stand against you as long as you live. For I will be with you as I was with Moses. I will not fail you or abandon you. Be strong and courageous, for you are the one who will lead these people to possess all the land I swore to their ancestors I would give them. Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Truly when we look through our eyes and circumstances we can be convinced that fear is the logical choice. But when we see things as God does, He removes all fears. We do not conquer our fears alone. God does it for us and never leaves our side.

Doubt the Dream Killer 9/23/13

Good Morning,

Monday already? How does it get here so quick? This morning my coffee is Door County Coconut Crush. I heated it a little longer in the microwave just because of the chill in the air today.

Doubt. Only five letters in this word but it could be one of the most powerful weapons that Satan uses to discourage us when first attempting to put out the fire and passion within a Christian's heart for their church, calling, and Godly lives. He is so slick that he will often use others in Christian authority to plant doubt within by using concern and good intentions to stop us.

God is very clear on doubting and what happens.

Proverbs 3:5-8                    
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

James 1:6                    

But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind.

Matthew 21:21                    

And Jesus answered them, “Truly, I say to you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what has been done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

Matthew 14:31                    

Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?”

Jesus clearly tells us not to doubt in Him. James writes that when we doubt we have very little chance of succeeding and we will quit.

But there is hope and hope is sometimes all we need to keep the flame going.

Philippians 4:13
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Tomorrow we not only study fear but we will learn to conquer it.

Church on Fire 9/22/13

Good Morning,

Sunday morning and it's early. Both of my hounds wanted to play and decided it was time for me to get up. There's nothing like a cold wet nose sitting next to the bed nudging at your face to get you moving or yelling. I chose to move and get up. They are both hunting dogs and we have started our hunting seasons. So they don't understand the "day of rest concept". So I brewed a pot of Highlander Grog Coffee from the Door County Coffee Company and here I am.

I hope this finds you blessed and preparing for a day of worship. Speaking of that, our church held a wedding yesterday and somehow after the ceremony one of the wedding candelabras went up in flames with intense heat. It took a fire extinguisher to put it out. The smoke had to be evacuated and the mess from the fire extinguisher was everywhere. Our custodian had his hands full trying to get the sanctuary ready for today. We moved our Saturday evening service to another large room for this week and made do.

But all that got me to thinking. In some instances it only takes a small extinguisher to put out a big flame, but it really makes a mess.

I started to wonder how many people might have sat in the chairs of our church totally on fire for God and passionate to do his work or make a decision to move forward in ministry when Satan launched an extinguisher at them. How many lives would be different if the fire hadn't been put out? How much more would the fire have spread in passion for Jesus if the fire hadn't been smothered out?

The extinguisher Satan uses contains four poison chemicals, sin, doubt, fear and lack of support. It only takes a little to take a passionate heart and a calling from God to turn it into a mess.

Over the next few days we will take a look at the four chemicals and their impact on putting the Holy fire out.

Today we look at the first Sin. 

Romans 6:23 (KJV)

23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Note that this verse is often used to lead someone to Jesus and is a very good verse to use. Without Jesus and the forgiveness He provides for our sin, our lives are doomed to eternity in hell. Yet this verse also speaks to the fact that sin puts to death ministries that are vibrant and producing fruit for the Kingdom. We must be careful to avoid the first poison Satan uses to extinguish the flame the Holy Spirit has started. Nothing destroys a reputation and kills a calling quicker than exposed sin.
One can be forgiven, yet never obtain the fire and passion that once was there because of the consequences of the sin. This the flame dies out.

We must protect ourselves at all times knowing fully well that we fight spiritual battles.


Ephesians 6:10-18 (NIV)

The Armor of God

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14 Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15 and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

So today stoke the flame in you with prayer and fasting. Protect your calling.

Chicken and Dumplings 9/21/13

Good Afternoon,

I started my day without computer access so this is a little late. My coffee this morning was some Door County Cherry Crème.

Over the last few days I have been visiting my Dad in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The plan was to hunt grouse and relax. The weather is seems had different ideas for us. We did hunt a bit but we were constantly nagged by rain.

On Thursday we stopped in to eat supper at a small diner and I was quite surprised to see that they had chicken and dumplings on the menu. For me it was a pleasant surprise because that is one of my favorite meals. As I was eating I could not help but think of some of the times when my mother would make that same dish for my brother, my nephews and me. Those were some fond memories. The one thing we never counted on is that she would be gone some day and we would not know how to make that savory delight. Her recipe and technique passed away with her.

There are many days that I wish I could make one last phone call to her and say some of the things that I never got to say and maybe even ask for the recipe. I do recall her wanting to show me how to make it, but of course I was too busy.

Friends take some time to "smell the dumplings". Spend time with your loved ones. One thing is certain we will all die some day. It could even be you that goes first. Our days are numbered. make the most of them and don't forget learn from those who can teach you something. Love hard, love fast, love soon.

Banana Bread as a Gift? 9/19/13

Good Morning,

Starting my day super early with a hot cup of Door County Maple Coffee in my hand.

Last night our home was filled with the aroma of banana bread baking in the oven. My wife had just started baking the bread. Her goal is to send it to my Dad in Michigan. He lives alone now and was used to my mother baking for him. He mentioned once while we were visiting that her baking was one of the things he missed most about her now that she has passed on.

My wife listens closely to conversations. After returning home she said "I am going to start baking breads or cookies and send them to your Dad. I can't take Mom's place but I can do a little." I have to tell you that she sends the bread priority mail, and when it arrives in Michigan I get a call right away. The local Post Office even calls my Dad to tell him that "the bread is here". He thinks the priority packaging is very funny.

But what is more important is that a loaf of banana bread brightens his day. We all need to listen closely to others. What you actually hear might help you to bless others with an act of random kindness. But listening only, without action is fruitless.

Decisions and God 9/18/13

Good Morning,

Last night was a long one for me. So this morning I am going to start my day with more prayer and sip very slowly some Door County Blueberry Cobbler Coffee.

I must admit that I have been burning the candle at work and church on both ends. It is usually at times like these when one or the other will need lots of attention. So in many cases especially at work I need to make decisions that impact patients, budgets, employees and communities as well as how they impact me and my family.

Decisions, decisions, decisions!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Argh. That's pirate talk to say that making decisions is not one of my fondest chores.

So, what to do when facing the challenge of making decisions? Make sure the decision is a Godly one.

CBN.com We all make decisions every day. Some of them are minor, like what to wear and where to go for lunch. Others are major, requiring much thought and prayer. Remember, big decision require big prayer -- and they require a thorough reflection on the seven keys to hearing God's voice.
After all of the seven keys have been considered in the decision-making process, the time comes to make the actual decision — but even then, it's still imperative to hear God’s voice and receive His guidance.
The prophet Jeremiah prayed a prayer in the Old Testament asking God for guidance, and it's still a good prayer for us to pray today.
I know, Lord, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course. So correct me, Lord, but please be gentle. Do not correct me in anger, for I would die. (Jeremiah 10:23–24 NLT)
The immature Christian goes where he or she wants to go. The mature Christian goes where the Father wants them to go. We must all adopt the attitude of John the Baptist who declared of Jesus, “He must increase, and I must decrease” (John 3:30).
When you are in the midst of making a major decision, you need to ask the Lord to give you grace to walk in holiness so that there will be nothing hindering you from hearing His voice.
Un-confessed sin, including pride, un-forgiveness, and anger can blind you. Also ask the Lord to help you live at peace with those around you. Be aware of the devil’s schemes to stir up trouble with your family, friends, business associates, and others when you are trying to make a decision. The more critical the decision, the more likely you will find the nest stirred, either to distract you, or to make you yield to anger, jealousy, or unforgiveness.
But if you stumble into sin during these critical times remember the promises of God: There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit (Romans 8:1). And: If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9).
Prayer is essential when you are facing a crossroads in your life. Don’t just pray here and there during the day, but have a special time each day set aside to commune with the Lord. But don’t just speak prayers out loud, listen for the voice of the Lord as well. Keep a journal so that you can write down what the Lord speaks to you in these special times.
During times of important decision-making, you may also want to fast as the Lord leads you. Fasting combined with prayer is an essential Christian discipline that should be a part of every mature believer’s life.
It is important, however, to understand that we cannot manipulate God into performing the way we would like Him to in any given situation. Fasting doesn’t impress God, but it helps you to overcome your flesh, and it purifies you so that your spiritual senses are more keen to hear God’s voice. You can’t manipulate God when you fast and pray, but participating in this spiritual discipline does please Him.
The Lord will often honor your efforts to become closer to Him, to be obedient to Him, and to strive to walk in a holy manner.
Bill Bright of Campus Crusade once said that fasting is the “atomic bomb of the spirit.” Do you want things to happen in your life? Spend time in fasting and in prayer.
While the Holy Spirit will be active in our lives, revealing His will to our hearts and then confirming that will through the other keys of God’s guidance, He will also be communicating through the passive aspect of His presence and the peace of God in our lives. As we have said, the Holy Spirit will tell us whether we are “safe” or “out” in any guidance we are considering.
Be careful that you don’t allow certain concerns to keep you from moving forward in a decision. Some Christians mistakenly believe that you must come to a place of “perfect peace” before you can move forward with a commitment or a decision. They think that if God is speaking to us, there will be no fears or doubts whatsoever. The Bible does promise the peace of Christ, but it never guarantees complete peaceful feelings. There are often concerns in a decision, but the Lord gives us an underlying assurance that He will be with us and guide us through.
Blaine Smith wrote the following about the peace of the Spirit:
His peace is the grace that transcends our fears, allowing us to move ahead in spite of doubt. Emotional peace will not be experienced until after we step out in faith. Furthermore, waiting for absolute peace before making every major decision would be paralyzing. Taking the first step is vital to experiencing peace — and God’s blessings. Biblical faith is the resolve to forge ahead, despite the fear of change.
Once we have submitted ourselves to God, and made things right in a spiritual sense, it is time to practically consider the decision we are making.
We have examined the decision in light of the seven keys: the Scripture, what the Holy Spirit has revealed to our heart; godly counsel; the peace of God; personal prophecy; confirmation; and circumstances. Before making a final decision, carefully examine the entire situation using your God-given intellect. Ask yourself these questions:
  • Is this new direction biblical?
  • [If you're married] Is my spouse in agreement with this decision?
  • Does it complement my spiritual gifts?
  • Can I use my God-given talents and abilities in this new role?
  • Does this new direction line up with the long-term desires of my heart?
  • Do I have the personal resources to move forward in this direction? Will I have to wait on God’s timing to bring those resources to me or to my organization?
  • Do I have the experience necessary to excel in this new area of responsibility? Or is God asking me to go out and gain the experience needed to move into this new venture?
  • Is it ethical? Is it legal?
  • Do I have the peace of Christ — not necessarily a complete and total freedom from concern — but do I have an assurance from the Lord that He will guide me in this new path?
  • Will my decision fulfill a desire that has been planted in my heart?
  • What are the key people around me saying about this new direction — parents, pastors, professors, mentors, and friends — how has my decision been balanced on the scales of their opinions?
  • Are the circumstantial doors opened or are they closed?
  • If the doors seem to be closed, does that mean I should back away, or do I have enough assurance through the other keys to wait in faith for God to bring the circumstances in line?
  • If the doors seem to be open, do I have enough assurance through the other keys for me to move forward in this decision?
  • Am I willing to die to my own desires if the Lord directs me in a way that I did not expect?
  • Am I willing to allow God to give me the desires of my heart, even if it means new, possibly frightening challenges and a loss of my comfort zone?
Once you are confident that you know God’s will, and you have His peace to move forward, take that step of faith and watch what God will do. Just like He did with Peter, when you lift your foot over the edge of the boat and step onto the water in obedience to His call, grace will come on the scene and God will do what it takes to see His will accomplished in your life.
 
 
Hearing God's Voice
The Seven Keys
Scripture: "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work" (II Timothy 3:16-17).
The Holy Spirit speaking to our heart: "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts. and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach everyone his fellow citizen, and everyone his brother, saying, 'know the Lord,' for all will know Me, from the least to the greatest of them" (Hebrews 8:10-11).
The Prophetic (word of knowledge, word of wisdom, personal prophecy): "Do not quench the Spirit; do not despise prophetic utterances. But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good" (I Thessalonians 5:19-21).
Godly counsel: "Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counselors there is safety" (Proverbs 11:14).

Confirmation: "By the mouth of two or three witnesses every fact may be confirmed" (Matthew 18:16).
The peace of God: "Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful" (Colossians 3:15).

Circumstances/Timing: "After these things he (Paul) left Athens and went to Corinth. And he found a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, having recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla, because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to leave Rome. He came to them, and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and they were working; for by trade they were tent-makers" (Acts 18:1-3 -- this relationship between Paul, Aquila and Priscilla -- which happened as a result of circumstances -- became one of the most important strategic partnerships in the book of Acts).

Sunrise on Lake Michigan 9/17/13

  Good Morning,

I am starting this day with a hot cup of coffee from the Door County Coffee Company. I am drinking Chocolate Meltdown wishing I was in Door County sitting along Lake Michigan watching the sun come up.

I watch the sun come up quite often and it amazes me. I looked up some facts about the sun.

Facts about the Sun

One million Earths could fit inside the Sun:
If a hollow Sun was filled up with spherical Earths then around 960,000 would fit inside. On the other hand if these Earths were squished inside with no wasted space then around 1,300,000 would fit inside. The Suns surface area is 11,990 times that of the Earth’s.
The Sun will one day be about the size of Earth:
After its red giant phase, the Sun will collapse, retaining its enormous mass, but containing the approximate volume of our planet. When this happens, it will be called a white dwarf.
The Sun contains 99.86% of the mass in the Solar System:
The mass of the Sun is approximately 330,000 times greater than that of Earth. It is almost three quarters Hydrogen, whilst most of the remaining mass is Helium.
The Sun is an almost perfect sphere:
There is only a 10 kilometer difference in its polar diameter compared to its equatorial diameter. Considering the vast expanse of the Sun, this means it is the closest thing to a perfect sphere that has been observed in nature.
Light from the Sun takes eight minutes to reach Earth:
With a mean average distance of 150 million kilometers from Earth and with light travelling at 300,000 kilometers per second, dividing one by the other gives us an approximate time of 500 seconds, or eight minutes and 20 seconds. Although this energy reaches Earth in a few minutes, it will already have taken millions of years to travel from the Sun’s core to its surface.
The Sun travels at 220 kilometers per second:
The Sun is 24,000-26,000 light years from the galactic center and it takes the Sun 225-250 million years to complete an orbit of the center of the Milky Way.
The distance from the Sun to Earth changes throughout the year:
Because the Earth travels on an elliptical orbit around the Sun, the distance between the two bodies varies from 147 to 152 million kilometers. The distance between the Earth and the Sun is called an Astronomical Unit (AU).
The Sun has a very strong magnetic field:
Solar flares occur when magnetic energy is released by the Sun during magnetic storms, which we see as sunspots. In sunspots, the magnetic lines are twisted and they spin, much like a tornado would on Earth.
The temperature inside the Sun can reach 15 million degrees Celsius:
At the Sun’s core, energy is generated by nuclear fusion, as Hydrogen converts to Helium. Because hot objects generally expand, the Sun would explode like a giant bomb if it weren’t for its enormous gravitational force.
The Sun generates solar wind:
This is a stream of charged particles, which travels through the Solar System at approximately 450 kilometers per second. Solar wind occurs where the magnetic field of the Sun extends into space instead of following its surface.

The sun is simply amazing. It warms me, lights my way, creates a wind. But more amazing is the One who created such an awesome sun.

He determines the number of the stars; He gives to all of them their names. Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; His understanding is beyond measure (Psalm 147:4-5).

Lift up your eyes on high and see: Who created these? He Who brings out their host by number, calling them all by name, by the greatness of His might, and because He is strong in power not one is missing (Isaiah 40:26).

When you look up into the sun and feel it's warmth. Remember who hung the sun. That One is truly amazing. Say thank you Dear Heavenly Father God. He hung that sun with you in mind

Jesus and the fish. 9/16/13

Good Morning,

I hope your weekend was a good one. Monday once more and I am starting my day with a hot cup of Door County Apple Cobbler Coffee.

This morning I want to talk about Jesus feeding the Five Thousand. Please read the verses below and notice where they mention a young boy who had five loaves and two fish. Now think like a little boy.
He was off to hear this man Jesus.
His mother packed him a lunch.
He was supposed to eat it.
But the Savior had a need.
This boy, probably poor, gave up his lunch. His lunch was a valuable item to the family. Yet Jesus used it and fed everyone including the boy. And there were left overs.
What we see is that Jesus decided to use the boy and the boy gave up his valuable possession and it was used in a miracle.

What has God asked you to give up in a day that could impact a miracle? How would you be used by God. The boy "gave it up"! God is calling you today. "Give it up" whatever it is.

10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down (about five thousand men were there). 11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over by those who had eaten.

Get ready and listen for Jesus to call you today. And then give it up.

Trust 9/15/13 with a recipe for Comfort Food

Good Morning,

Sunday morning, and I hope this finds you all spiritually ready for church and a wonderful time of praise and worship with God. It is a cold and rainy morning in South East Wisconsin. My coffee cup is filled with Door County Coconut Crush.

Trust is a word that has heavy implications but is used all too often flippantly in conversations. "Trust me" is a phrase used many times to sell someone else on a particular service or the purchase of an item. "Trust me this is the best".  But when we say those two words we are putting our name on the line. When we say trust me to someone we have hurt " that will never happen again, you can trust me" our word needs to be good. Many times I have witnessed people who have been wronged forgive others without blinking an eye and yet the bond of trust is broken. Teens will often in a fit of self pity say "you don't trust me" while lobbying their parents for permission to do something that has been rejected by the parents. Now again too often the teen has not yet proved they can be trusted yet or the trust bond between the parent and teen has been broken.

What is the cure for this? This is a personal thing for each of us. Our word needs to be good. Our word goes with our name.

When we break our promises time after time we remove from our "Name Bucket" another portion of trust that is hard to refill. If this weren't important, God would not have included it in His word many times. The verse above is just a sample of two of them.

Protect your name, keep your trust bucket full. Let your word or vows be kept. It makes for much better relationships and makes us easier to love.

I have a thought. Nothing makes a house smell better than something that is baked, especially on a cold morning. Here's one that is sure to bring smiles and a good aroma to the home. This is one I make and consider it "Comfort Food"

Baked Oatmeal.

Prep: 10 min. Bake: 40 min.
YIELD: 9

Ingredients

  • 3 cups quick-cooking oats
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground Tone's® Ground Cinnamon
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • Additional milk

Directions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, combine oats, brown sugar, baking powder, salt and cinnamon. In another bowl, whisk eggs, milk and butter. Stir into oat mixture until blended.
  2. Spoon into a greased 9-in. square baking pan. Bake 40-45 minutes or until set. Serve warm with milk. Yield: 9 servings.

Dreams That Come True 9/14/13

Good Morning.

Saturday morning in the goose blind. Nice and chilly out here. Today is a celebration for me. I broke out the first of my Door County Maple Coffee to really enjoy this cooler fall weather. Nothing like being with good buddies, our dogs, hot coffee and cookies.

But the topic for us today is dreams. As an avid hunter of waterfowl, days like today are only a dream in the spring and summer months.

The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace

So as often as I find myself dreaming of mornings like this, I have to sit back and say that I am blessed to have God make the dream come true. The sun is on the horizon, the coffee is steaming from the cup, I am at peace and know that I am loved today. "Let the dream continue".

Words to Live by 9/13/13

Good Morning,

Friday at last. My coffee cup is filled to the top with steaming hot Door County Blueberry Cobbler.

Well Friday is pretty much the start of the weekend. What do you have planned? Maybe some golf, hunting, shopping, one last picnic or yard work? No matter what you might be doing, chances are you will interact with other people. Some of the interactions might be pleasant and maybe some others won't be so nice. But no matter what let me suggest the "Golden Rule".

31 Do to others as you would have them do to you.

Get some nasty, don't pay back with nasty. Get short changed. don't cheat the waitress.  Treat others the way you would like to be treated.

Just think how much better school, the work place, or church would be if we just followed this simple rule.

Confrontation Is Not Always Easy 9/12/13

Good Morning,

Today I am very tired and the coffee will be a strong cup of Door County Cherry Crème. I can smell it brewing right now.

We will first read Acts7:51-60. In these verses we find Stephen. Who was Stephen?

Saint Stephen (Koine Greek: Στέφανος, Stephanos; sometimes spelled "Stephan"), the first martyr of Christianity, was, according to the Acts of the Apostles, a deacon in the early church at Jerusalem who aroused the enmity of members of various synagogues by his teachings. Accused of blasphemy, at his trial he made a long speech fiercely denouncing the Jewish authorities who were sitting in judgment on him and was stoned to death. His martyrdom was witnessed by Saul of Tarsus (later renamed Paul), a Pharisee who would later convert to Christianity and become an apostle.

What we see in Stephen is that he had one chance to speak up to the Pharisees and he did it. They rejected the Holy Spirit and the Good News of Jesus Christ right up to killing Stephen. But he delivered the hard message. Notice he did not even hold a grudge as they were stoning him.

Stephen knew his calling and was not ashamed to go at it for Jesus. He was not ashamed of the Gospel nor did he fear what men could do to him. Despite the danger of offending them and suffering their wrath he went forward and obeyed God.

Many people look for a hero as a leader. I suggest that Stephen was a real hero. One endorsed by God. How heroic are you feeling today? Gospel delivery anyone?

I started this day with some Door County Blueberry Cobbler.

Today marks a day of tragedy for the united States and I suppose the world. I choose today shorten the devotional and ask you all to recall where you were on 9/11/2001. Lets devote this day to prayer and peace.

The September 11 attacks (also referred to as September 11, September 11th, or 9/11[nb 1]) were a series of four coordinated terrorist attacks launched by the Islamic terrorist group al-Qaeda upon the United States in New York City and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area on Tuesday, September 11, 2001.
Four passenger airliners were hijacked by 19 al-Qaeda terrorists so they could be flown into buildings in suicide attacks. Two of those planes, American Airlines Flight 11 and United Airlines Flight 175, were crashed into the North and South towers, respectively, of the World Trade Center complex in New York City. Within two hours, both towers collapsed with debris and the resulting fires causing partial or complete collapse of all other buildings in the WTC complex, as well as major damage to ten other large surrounding structures. A third plane, American Airlines Flight 77, was crashed into the Pentagon (the headquarters of the United States Department of Defense), leading to a partial collapse in its western side. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, was targeted at Washington, D.C.,[2] but crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania after its passengers tried to overcome the hijackers. In total, almost 3,000 people died in the attacks, including the 227 civilians and 19 hijackers aboard the four planes. It also was the deadliest incident for firefighters in the history of the United States.

Italian Food with a Recipe 9/10/13

Good Morning ,
This day will start early and run late. Time to coffee up with some Door County Cherry Crème.

I thank my God every time I remember you.

The other day I was recalling some fond memories from my childhood and I could not help but smile when I recalled my grandmother. Grandma was a short little Italian woman very proud of her heritage. One my best memories was when we would get together with her sister Jeanette and they would make a feast of gnocchi, meatballs, and garlic bread. Those were the days. Did you ever notice that some good things will always get passed on to the next generation? I make that dish, and so do other members of my family.

Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me—put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

Friends it is good to recall fond and wholesome memories. Those memories are gifts from God to be cherished. Sometimes I can still smell the marinara sauce.

Here's the recipe.

Gnocchi!!!
Scant 2 pounds of starchy potatoes (2 large russets)
1/4 cup egg, lightly beaten
scant 1 cup of unbleached all-purpose flour
fine grain sea salt
Fill a large pot with cold water. Salt the water, then cut potatoes in half and place them in the pot. Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes until tender throughout, this takes roughly 40-50 minutes.
Remove the potatoes from the water one at a time with a slotted spoon. Place each potato piece on a large cutting board and peel it before moving on to the next potato. Also, peel each potato as soon as possible after removing from the water (without burning yourself) - I've found a paring knife comes in handy here. Be mindful that you want to work relatively quickly so you can mash the potatoes when they are hot. To do this you can either push the potatoes through a ricer, or do what I do, deconstruct them one at a time on the cutting board using the tines of a fork - mash isn't quite the right term here. I run the fork down the sides of the peeled potato creating a nice, fluffy potato base to work with, don't over-mash - you are simply after an even consistency with no noticeable lumps.
Save the potato water.
Let the potatoes cool spread out across the cutting board - ten or fifteen minutes. Long enough that the egg won't cook when it is incorporated into the potatoes. When you are ready, pull the potatoes into a soft mound - drizzle with the beaten egg and sprinkle 3/4 cup of the flour across the top. I've found that a metal spatula or large pastry scraper are both great utensils to use to incorporate the flour and eggs into the potatoes with the egg incorporated throughout - you can see the hint of yellow from the yolk. Scrape underneath and fold, scrape and fold until the mixture is a light crumble. Very gently, with a feathery touch knead the dough. This is also the point you can add more flour (a sprinkle at a time) if the dough is too tacky. I usually end up using most of the remaining 1/4 cup flour, but it all depends on the potatoes, the flour, the time of year, the weather, and whether the gnocchi gods are smiling on you. The dough should be moist but not sticky. It should feel almost billowy. Cut it into 8 pieces. Now gently roll each 1/8th of dough into a snake-shaped log, roughly the thickness of your thumb. Use a knife to cut pieces every 3/4-inch . Dust with a bit more flour.
To shape the gnocchi hold a fork in one hand  and place a gnocchi pillow against the tines of the fork, cut ends out. With confidence and an assertive (but light) touch, use your thumb and press in and down the length of the fork. The gnocchi should curl into a slight "C" shape, their backs will capture the impression of the tines as tiny ridges (good for catching sauce later). Set each gnocchi aside, dust with a bit more flour if needed, until you are ready to boil them. This step takes some practice, don't get discouraged, once you get the hang of it it's easy.
Now that you are on the final stretch, either reheat your potato water or start with a fresh pot (salted), and bring to a boil. Cook the gnocchi in batches by dropping them into the boiling water roughly twenty at a time. They will let you know when they are cooked because they will pop back up to the top. Fish them out of the water a few at a time with a slotted spoon ten seconds or so after they've surfaced. Have a large platter ready with a generous swirl of whatever sauce or favorite pesto you'll be serving on the gnocchi. Place the gnocchi on the platter. Continue cooking in batches until all the gnocchi are done. Gently toss with more sauce or pesto (don't overdo it, it should be a light dressing), and serve immediately, family-style.
