Good Morning,
I must say I am enjoying my hot cup of Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee at my desk today and it is time to write.
Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others as more significant than yourselves.
Any typical Tuesday night I attend our Men's Bible Study at our church. Last night was an exception by choice. The plan to meet was changed and it was decided to make up two groups and visit two church members who are considered shut ins. Last Saturday night these two were prayed for during a prayer service. Someone in that group said " I need to go and see them. " Well when that was said I always believe the Holy Spirit it prompting action. That's where the plan was hatched to send a couple of groups to the two sites where our friends are living now. I was able to be a part of the team that visited our friend Karen.
Karen is in a hospice facility after she requested her husband to make arrangements for her to stop all treatments and allow her to go home to heaven. This happened a few weeks ago and Karen is now waiting on the Lord to take her home. As long as I have known Karen she has been suffering physically. And as of late it has taken it's toll. So our visit went well. Karen was alert and smiled a lot as we read scripture to her, prayed and sang some hymns.
Karen shared a few things on her mind with us and as much as she is still suffering and has death knocking at her door, she reached out to us to let us know that she worries about her husband. She is concerned about his welfare after she is home in heaven. Here with a boat load of her own woes she is more concerned about him than she is about herself.
The lesson for today is this. I know this is an extreme case. But for her to be in hospice and it was not the elephant in the room, we all know the future. This lady did her best to smile and encourage us. She is placing her husband ahead of her own problems in the most unselfish way I have ever witnessed.
Are you placing your spouse first in your life. Or are you being selfish and making everything about you? It was an honor to visit her, but who got the most out of it?
Food for thought,
Marty
