It Ain't Easy 11/30/2021

 Good Morning,

I hear the familiar sound of Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee brewing in the kitchen. I am thinking that I should move the coffee maker next to the desk for convenience.

The picture below is one of the many antiques that grace our kitchen. It is an old flour sifter and combination measuring cup.

The device is used to measure flour and sift it finely, thus avoiding lumpiness in the dough. The sifter is cranked and forces the flour through a screen and into a bowl. That flour is more than strained.

Luke 22:31-32New King James Version (NKJV)
31 And the Lord said,“Simon, Simon! Indeed, Satan has asked for you, that he may sift you as wheat. 32 But I have prayed for you, that your faith should not fail; and when you have returned to Me, strengthen your brethren.”

We see in the Scripture above that Jesus is telling Peter that Satan has asked to sift him like wheat. What does that mean for Peter? What does that mean for us today?  John Piper writes

"What does Satan aim to do? What does "sifting like wheat" refer to in real life? The best clue comes in the next sentence where Jesus says, "But I prayed for you that your faith fail not." Satan aims to sift Simon and the others like wheat. Jesus aims to keep Simon's faith from failing. So probably "sifting like wheat" means doing something to make the disciples' faith fail.
We can imagine a picture like this: Satan has a big sieve with jagged-edged wires forming a mesh with holes shaped like faithless men and women. What he aims to do is throw people into this sieve and shake them around over these jagged edges until they are so torn and weak and desperate that they let go of their faith and fall through the sieve as faithless people, right into Satan's company. Faith cannot fall through the mesh. It's the wrong shape. And so as long as the disciples hold to their faith, trusting the power and goodness of God for their hope, then they will not fall through the mesh into Satan's hands.
Therefore the sifting of Simon Peter and the others is Satan's effort to destroy their faith. And this remains Satan's main goal today. It is relatively unimportant to Satan whether we are healthy or sick, rich or poor; what he wants is to sift out our faith. If he can do it by suffering, he will try that; if he can do it by wealth, he will try that. Peter learned a good lesson that night. Some 30 years later he wrote in 1 Peter 5:8, 9: "Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to devour. Resist him firm in your faith." Jesus pictured Satan as a farmer shaking Christians in his sieve, trying to tear them apart from their faith. Peter pictures Satan as a lion who can devour anything but faith. The only person that can fit through Satan's sieve is an unbeliever. The only thing that will fit down the lion's throat is an unbeliever. This is the victory that overcomes Satan's sieve and Satan's throat, our faith (1 John 5:4). If we hold it fast to the end, Satan cannot destroy us. That's why John writes to the church of Smyrna in Revelation 2:10: "
Do not fear what you are about to suffer. Behold the devil is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and for ten days you will have tribulation. Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life.
Yes, God does allow us to be sifted, but if we hold steadfast in our faith, our faith grows stronger.  When our faith grows stronger, those who were once weak now become the encourager. Peter was used through his sifting to encourage us through his writing.  There is purpose behind the sifting.

So if today you need encouragement because your faith is being tested, look up to the Author and Finisher of your faith. As in Peter's case, Jesus is interceding for you with prayer.

Hang in there.

Almost An Accident 11/28/21

 Good Morning,

My day is going to be different from the normal routine. I will be training a new hire for the company I work for. I am grateful that they feel I am able to train the "New Guy". So today I will share with him a hot cup of Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee.

Proverbs 22:3 The prudent sees danger and hides himself, but the fool goes on and suffers for it.

Yesterday I was up early and I went outside with our two dogs. The back yard was populated with 4 rabbits. Once the dogs hit the grass the rabbits beat it in four different directions. Our older dog has given up on trying to catch a rabbit. But on the other hand, our younger dog still sees the challenge and accepts it.  Leo our 2 year old hit the yard at full speed and his prey went for the closest fence panel and scooted underneath. The gap between the fence and the ground might be big enough for the rabbit to escape, but it is a definite road block to our Springer Spaniel.

Leo was going full bore and he is one of the fastest dogs I have ever owned. I saw it coming and before I could whistle him to stop he hit that fence like a run away train. Kaboom! He bounced off of the fence and actually wobbled like a prize fighter hit by a right hook, one that lands squarely on the chin.

Leo was also startled and tried running to me. He came to where I was sitting at the picnic table. He tried jumping onto the platform which normally is an easy jump for him. He missed and banged himself again on the chest. I grabbed him and calmed him down. Looked him over and I just held him still for fifteen minutes. He seemed to be coming out of it and he wanted to go inside. Once inside he watered up and laid down on his bed. I checked on him every 30 minutes and within two hours he was back to normal. We kept him quiet for the rest of the day. He is doing fine. Just a few minutes ago, I let the dogs out for their morning business and once more there were rabbits in the yard. Leo saw them and started after them. Half way to them he stopped the chase, knowing he made them run away.  He had learned a valuable lesson.

Friends the point for the day is this. Make a mistake now and then, but learn not to repeat them. There is safety in doing so.

God bless.

Reunion Time 11/28/2021

 Good Morning.

The wind is blowing pretty hard this morning and it didn't take me very long to discover that I wasn't dressed properly for the cold air this morning. Once our dogs decided that they were also cold, I retreated to the den with a hot cup of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee and my thoughts.

Psalm 133:1 Behold how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity.

Last night my wife Rene and I went to a small get together at a local restaurant with several old friends. We hadn't seen some of them for at least fifteen years. Two of our friends were visiting from Colorado, while the rest of us live relatively close to each other. We at times would see two or three of them as our professional lives crossed paths. But to have the old gang together was a great way to step into December. For us it was an early Christmas gift. We caught up on the in between years from the last time we were together. Kids are now in their twenties or more, and then a little talk about the grandchildren. Past antics were discussed and laughed about and I must say as for the two of us it was a great time.

On the way home we talked about the fact that we have been blessed with good friends and there was a fact that I didn't think of but Rene did. "We all have aged for sure. But we are all still standing and no one has passed away. What a blessing!" was her comment.

I thought about that comment last night and decided that Thanksgiving weekend really wasn't over and I was just shown another blessing to be grateful for. It was discussed that this needs to be an annual event when the two from Colorado come to town to visit family. It just takes a commitment to manage the calendar. Make time to visit with your old friends and laugh about the past and celebrate the "Now". It is good for the soul.

God bless,

Marty

Standing Tall. Message For Men. 11/27/21

 Good Morning.

Morning came earlier than usual today so I could duck hunt and enjoy time with my nephew and our buddy. I will be drinking a hot cup of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee in my truck and in the duck blind. Now it is time to write.

1 Corinthians 13:11 When I was a child, I talked like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.

Today's message is for men. Ladies, feel free to pass it on to the guys in your life.

As we struggle and strive to be the men God intended us to be, we need to keep the right perspective and view of ourselves. The everyday pressures of our lives can bring frustration and self doubt. In reality, it doesn't take too much to break some guys down. Each of us suffers from self doubt, but in varies degrees. It is during these times of frustration and doubt that we must realize and remember that we have been created in the image and likeness of God and we were created to stand tall as men. Jesus Christ Our Lord and Savior was the perfect example of what a man should be.

Don Hillis states: Jesus humbled Himself, but he never humiliated Himself. He laid aside His glory, but not His self respect. He was willing to be cursed, but He himself never cursed. He was despised and rejected by men, but He didn't despise or reject Himself. No word of self condemnation ever escaped His lips. Jesus believed that man was God's highest creation and He exalted manhood.

As guys, we will face and endure many challenges and temptations during our lives. What we need to recognize is that our downfalls will often be the result of our own childish desires.

Guys, for your good and the good of those in your family or your close circle, let go of any desire that could cause your downfall today. Anger, pride, inability to forgive, greed, irresponsibility, or lust, let it go. Stand Tall!

An Approved Fence 11/26/2021

 Good Moring,

No coffee for me today, lab work needs to be done and an appointment for breakfast I had for earlier was cancelled. So it's off to work for a bit and then some lab work.

My wife and I had a need to to fence in our yard due to the intrusion of coyotes on a regular basis. Our two hunting dogs were not safe at times while outside at night. Our youngest dog also has a tendency to roam outside of his boundaries. It was very clear after some close calls that a fence was needed.

We started pursuing a contractor to erect a fence for us. That process took about three months. Once we had a plan and a quote we could go to our city and apply for a permit. That process took a little fight to get a fence and in the long run a compromise of the exact location of the fence with the city was agreed upon. Now it was winter and the fence had to wait until spring. The next hurdle was the "supply chain". Lumber and fencing was not available through the spring and summer. Fall arrived and it still wasn't looking too good. The next hurdle was a choice that had to be made. We ordered a four foot fence and that was what was approved by the city. The only fencing and lumber available was 6 foot panels, which was going to cost more. By this time I was just about going to quit on the whole idea. Rene and I prayed about it, and agreed to go ahead and spend more and take a six foot fence. The project was completed and we were satisfied with the work. We paid the bill and then pursued a fence inspection. That took another three weeks to achieve. The day came, it was rainy mixed with a few snow flakes and our fence was inspected and approved. The project from start to finish was a year and a half.

My point today is this. Patience was needed. I forgot to mention "Covid". The fence crew had covid run through the crew and that also delayed things at least a month.

Ecclesiastes 7:8 Better is the end of a thing, than it's beginning, and the patient in spirit is better than the proud spirit.

There were times in this project that I just wanted to quit, get my down payment back, scream at the city, I even considered moving to a new location.

But the fence is in now. It is paid for. The dogs are safe and we have more privacy. So in the long run it was worth waiting for.   I had to be patient.

Being Thankful In All Times 11/25/21

 Good Morning,

Our two dogs Gibbs and Leo are asleep right at my feet and a hot cup of Door County Pumpkin Spice Coffee is next to me. Today I have the coffee in a cup that was gifted to me years ago from people I am thankful to call friends. I doubt they even remember giving it to me. I drink from it on special occasions.

Our fireplace is crackling with a hardwood fire and the house is warming up nicely. It is so quiet right now, except for a few low flying flocks of geese flying over the house as they head South for the winter.

My thoughts for this Thanksgiving Day are many. My mind is like a busy train station with trains coming and going. I have lots of thoughts going through my mind. They stop in for a moment and like a fast train they are gone again.

The one that has stuck with me is this one. I for one have much to be thankful for and to count all my blessings is a joy. I have been married for 1000 years to a wonderful person. We have one parent left. We have a daughter and grandson who are doing well. We still have  siblings, nieces and nephews.  We have friends, our church, and income in these later years of ours. There is firewood stacked outside, food in the pantry and freezer. Two great dogs to help me hunt and amuse me. Our health is pretty good.

Most of all, we know where these blessings come from and we want to say thank you to our God who loves us.

Colossians 3:17
And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

James 1:17
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.

We both know of the heaven that awaits us some day and having that reassurance is comforting during hard times and tragedy.

My last thought for today is this. I am thankful for whoever reads this. I am thankful for you. I pray God blesses your day.

Pumpkin Pie And The Heart 11/24/21

 Good Morning,

My eyes tell me it is time to be awake, but the rest of my body is not on the same time schedule today. I just sat down with a hot mug of Door County Autumn Spice Coffee and now it is time to write.

Psalm 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds their wounds

Our home state has been in the news just a little too much lately with a high profile murder trial that was politically charged with two sides with different opinions, and as of late, this Christmas parade tragedy. The impact of both has stretched far and wide, especially if you know of people who are suffering the loss of a family member. I was driving home from work when the news flashed that another person passed away yesterday from his injuries sustained from the parade mess. It just so happened that I was driving right past the hospital where many children are still fighting for their lives. I will admit to having a tear roll down my cheek as I prayed for his family and those healthcare workers taking care of him.

Last night my wife Rene asked if I thought we should forego Thanksgiving dinner in lieu of the tragedy. I gave it a thought for a moment and replied "no". I said "your mother is 94 years old, you just had your brother pass away. We couldn't gather safely last year. If mother is up to it, we need to gather and be thankful. We have much to be thankful for. Evil will not be allowed to ruin the day."

So sometime today the house will be filled with the aroma of pumpkin pie and apple pie in the oven baking to perfection. I for one will enjoy it. My mind will wander to happier days and I will rest on a couple of memories. I will pray again for those who cannot even taste pie or turkey because pain and sorrow have numbed their senses. I will pray for their hearts to heal.

So tomorrow, if at all possible cherish the moments and let those around you know you are thankful for them and tell them they are loved. And if need be, have a little more whipped cream on your pie.

Love to all,

Marty

Tragedy In Waukesha 11/23/2021

 Good Morning,

I am here at me desk, drinking a hot cup of Door County Autumn Spice Coffee and contemplating what I should write today.

Last Sunday during a Christmas parade in Waukesha Wisconsin, evil got into an SUV and drove over people at the parade. Evil did not discriminate by age, beliefs, or stature. Young and old alike were mowed down by evil and many were severely injured and at the time of this writing 5 people have passed away.

Evil chose to maim, kill and destroy, without hesitating. Evil took the breath away from those left behind and a parade might not ever be the same joy as it used to be for some.

Evil chose to tarnish the face of good and dash the Spirit of Christmas. That won't happen. I know the end of the story for evil.

So as I have been doing, since first hearing about this tragedy, I will continue to pray for the victims and their families. I will stay steadfast in my devotional reading and look for ways to assist and help the families of this atrocious tragedy. I will turn to God and draw close to His side and long for the day when there will be no more evil to deal with.

Matthew 25:41 The shall he say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, who are cursed, into the eternal fire, prepared for the devil and his angels .

My heart breaks for those who are hurting now, but as for me I will rest knowing that one day, evil will not exist anywhere but in Hell.

A Good Way To Start The Week. Pray. 11/22/21

 Good Morning,

The aroma of the Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee has been arriving to my nostrils and it is an aroma worth waking up to.

Monday it is, and I have a busy three days before Thanksgiving arrives. I was putting my week together to see if I could organize myself a little better. There is a lot going on and I found myself fretting over a few things needing to be done. Once that mode set into my mind I knew it was time to shut down and pray about my schedule and how it should be laid out.  Once I laid out my concerns to God, He took over and helped me to organize my time and it included a little rest as well.

I need some peace of mind and heart. There is no room for anxiety this week.

Philippians 4:6-7 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition , with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends , all understanding will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

I asked God to place a guard around my heart and mind so that I think and know that He is in all that I need to do. Maybe we should all adopt this Biblical truth every day, especially Mondays and the day before Monday.

Jelly Beans And Potatoes 11/21/21

 Good Morning,

My desk and chair are a little cold this morning as I sit and write to all of you. There is some light snow and rain falling from the sky, mostly rain. I have a hot cup of Door County Caramel Apple Coffee next to me and our two dogs are sleeping on my feet. I should be warm pretty soon.

Matthew 18:20 For where tow or more are gathered in my name. I am there among them.

Last night after our church service, we held a small fellowship gathering which centered around baked potatoes. Your meal consisted of a baked potato and whatever you wanted to put on top of your potato. There were so many choices of items to top off the potato that it is hard to recall all of them. Several different cheeses , veggies, meat, and chili were there to garnish the spuds. One topping that stood out was a bag of "Jelly Beans".

We held a potato night a few years ago and a young girl started telling me weeks in advance of the event, that she would be bringing jelly beans for a potato topping. I thought she was kidding me. But on the night of the event there was a bag of jelly beans there to be eaten. This family has since moved away and we have only seen them twice since the move. I received an email last week letting me know that they would be visiting and they would see us at church on Saturday night. In my reply I mentioned that we would be once again having a potato night and they should plan on staying and eating with us.

Low and behold our little version of Shirley Temple was there last night, except that she all of a sudden wasn't that little girl who always sat in the third row with her family on Saturday nights. She is now 13 years old and a lot taller than the last time we saw her. During the service I kept wondering if we would see some jelly beans at the buffet and much to my amazement, she did not let us down. Her family brought the jelly beans. I did see some folks munching on a few including this older friend of ours.  I for one threw a few on top of my hot potato and they melted, leaving a crimson, red and blue coloring on my meal.

What's the point here. Amidst all the high inflation, violence, and natural disasters it was nice to see this wonderful family again. It was funny once more to be eating jelly beans on top of jalapenos and cheese on my potato. It was a simple night that made for a lot of smiles. I for one can't wait until our next little event in January. You see dear friends, Jesus and worship are why we gathered last night. Add in some fellowship time and all you can say about that is "Sweet". Old friends and jelly beans.

God bless,

Marty

Never Out Of Work. Prayer For Saturday. 11/20/21

 Good Morning,

I am taking some extra time to enjoy my hot cup of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee this morning, waiting for the sun to come up. It seems a little slow today for some reason.

In my lifetime I have have experienced a few times when work was hard to find, yet somehow, someway I was always blessed with enough to pay my bills. God provided just enough to get by. I am truly grateful for that.

Now and then I like to take a psalm, read it and use it as part of my prayer time. I have done that today.

Psalm 139:23-24 Search me O God, and know my heart; try me and know my thoughts. 24. And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Every time I read and pray this passage God shows me something that I should change or could improve on in my personal life. Unfortunately there is always something in the self improvement standards according to God's word I seem to never be out of work. This morning He has charged me as guilty in a couple of areas  that need changing. I need to get chopping at my wooden heart that doesn't want to change. A couple of attitudes need to leave.

I challenge you to do the same today and ask God to show you what you need to change, lose, or bring in. You might end up leaving a burden at His door step. God never leads you to something if He doesn't intend on bringing us through it.

Isaiah 41:10 Fear not, for I am with you; Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, Yes I will help you, I will uphold you with me righteous, right hand.

Enjoy the day God has given you. With Him you can do it.

If You're Happy And You Know It! 11/19/2021

 Good Morning,

I just finished pouring myself a hot cup of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee. Our dogs have been outside and it is time to write.

Proverbs 15:13 A glad heart makes a cheerful face.

One of the childhood songs that I can even recall singing is "If You're Happy And You Know It". For instance, we would sing "If you're happy and you know it clap your hands." The next line might be, if you're happy and you know it stomp your feet. We would, on command to the tune stomp our feet, clap our hands adding a new command each time and speeding up the tempo. Before too long you were sing clap your hands, stomp your feet. twirl right, jump up etc. etc. etc. At the end of the choruses we would sing "If You're happy and you know it than your face will surely show it."

I am sure some of you are recalling that song right now and it has either caused you to smile or have violent seizures this morning.

In a time when wearing masks seems to be the norm, the smiles we once were accustomed to are hidden for the most part. I work part time in healthcare now and we wear masks all day long. Yet our eyes can give away our emotions. The other day while walking through a medical center I ran into a lady I haven't seen in two years.  As we passed each other in the corridor, our eyes met and we both started smiling under our masks. Our eyes gave our emotions away. It was so nice to see her again and catch up for a few minutes. Now, we don't wear masks 24/7 so here is my thought for the day. Smile when needed with your eyes. Smile when you can show it without a mask. If you are happy let people know with that big smile and twinkling eyes.

What good is it if you are as happy as a kid with an all day loli pop and two tongues, if you don't express the happiness to others?

Enjoy your day and share the joy, whenever you can.

Thanks For Even The Little Things 11/18/2021

 Good Morning,

The day has begun and it came in with gusto. I have a long day ahead of me and I am looking forward to Friday. I will be pouring a large cup of Door County Cherry Creme Coffee and then hitting the road.

Yesterday I was able to have lunch with a close friend. He and his wife have had a rough couple of years with work issues and health problems. To be able to go out for lunch with him wouldn't have been a big deal five years ago, but yesterday was a first in a long time. My friend felt well enough to go out and eat, and survived the whole day without issues  from the food. We were blessed with him being able to enjoy one good day. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but I did not think it would happen,

Ephesians 5:20 Give thanks always for all things to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

My lesson for today is to remind us all to be thankful to God for all things, even the little things. We need to have thankfulness on our lips and in our minds.  If you are going to work today, be thankful for a job. I for one will be thankful for a warm vehicle,

Friends, lets remember to thank God for all He does, even the little things.

City On The Edge 11/17/2021

 Good Morning,

I have retreated to our den this morning to spend time praying, writing, and enjoying my cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee.

This morning a city in Wisconsin is awaiting a verdict from a trial that has drawn national attention. We live within 45 minutes of that city. This trial is filled with tension and the city is on edge. There are clearly two different sides, and opinions as to what happened, and what the verdict should be. Demonstrations for both sides were held at the courthouse yesterday and people were already highly agitated with each other. It wouldn't have taken much to ignite some violence. This trial is racially charged with emotional dynamite and could have consequences nationally. The National Guard is in wait if needed to quell any civil unrest either way.

My opinion on the case will not be mentioned here and it really isn't important. What is important to me is that people use common sense and do not have a replay of the rioting, looting and eventual killing of people in expressing their disappointment in the verdict no matter what the outcome is. There are peaceful and legal ways to show displeasure and air their emotions.

You can count it a fact that both sides will be tempted by agitators sent from hell itself to stir up emotions to the breaking point.

In Psalm 23 David acknowledges God's goodness and protection in his life. David has come to learn the comfort in depending on God. He recounts this experience as equating God as a shepherd to him,- leading him through despair and protecting Him. We too can have this confidence in God at this time if we seek His way and His leadership.

Psalm 23:3 He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for His name's sake.

There is a road less traveled and it is the one of peace. I pray for this city, this state and this nation.

God bless,

Marty

Joy, Comfort And Peace. Not Just A Commercial To Me 11/16/2021

 Good Morning,

My Door County Highlander Grog Coffee is plenty hot and I am ready to write.

I am not one who watches too much television and if I do it is with a purpose. I don't turn the television on unless I am specifically going to watch something and right after that it gets turned off. But while watching a football game on Sunday, JC Penny aired a commercial that just stuck with me. It has neighbors, family and people you would meet in a store wishing each other to have Joy, Comfort, and Peace. It is now my favorite Christmas commercial.

When I think of Joy, I think of Jesus and how He desires His joy to die for our sins so we might share the joy of heaven with Him. John 15:11 These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

When I think of Comfort, I think of Jesus. He is the Great Comforter and no one can comfort us like the loving arms of Jesus. Matthew 5:4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

When I think of Peace. I think about the One who is Peace. I think of Jesus. Philippians 4:7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Soon we will be approaching the Christmas Season and I for one will be hoping your hearts are full of Joy, Comfort and Peace. I hope you are filled with Jesus/

Have A Great Day!

Dinner Was Great. The Time Spent Priceless 11/15/2021

 Good Morning,

Today began with a smile on my face and a prayer on my heart. It also started with a hot cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee. Now it is time to write.

My wife Rene and I were invited to my brother's home for dinner last night. When asked what we could bring, he said "nothing" he had everything covered. I have always said that I really liked eating my brother's cooking, I was looking forward to dinner all day long. My brother also introduced us to a lady friend of his and right from the start of the evening we hit it off just like we knew her for years. Before dinner began this lady prayed and listening to her prayer was a refreshing moment in my day. The prayer was elegant yet simple and you could tell just from the prayer that her love for God was genuine.

Ecclesiastes 9:7 Go eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine with a merry heart, for God has already approved what you do.

I left, full from eating too much salmon, and yet I was content with being blessed with a great night. I am looking forward to more family dinners. It has been a long time since I ate a dinner with joy. If you are debating whether or not to accept a dinner invitation for Thanksgiving or Christmas, say yes and go. Don't be robbed of the experience of being with family. You just might have a dinner approved by God and the memories are priceless. Don't let another month go by without reuniting with family. If something has happened in the past, bury the hatchet, forgive and forget, and say "It's good to be here."

Enjoy life. It is too short not to,.

Someone Is Always Watching. 5/15/2021

 Good Morning,

The house has a chill in it this morning, and our two dogs seem a little sluggish. As for me, I am both a little chilled and sluggish to get started. Maybe the cup of Door County Autumn Spice Coffee I am drinking will take care of both of my issues.

Ephesians 5:15-17 Be very careful, then how you live, not as unwise, but as wise, 16. making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is.

I will be speaking very frankly this morning. If you are a church going , God loving, Bible reading person, you will be the first to admit that we aren't perfect. You can't help but be all three of these character traits without knowing that we aren't perfect. We strive hard to be the perfect example of God's children but all too often we fail. God expects us to improve as we walk with Him, and knows that as hard as we try we will give in to temptation. I am not excusing faltering in life, I am just stating a fact.

There is another source of help for us. It is a simple thought, from a simple man. "Someone is always watching"  You say, "of course, God is always watching". This is true and should be enough to stop us from falling.  But, I am speaking about those who are just watching for our imperfections so they can apply the label of hypocrite to  those trying to walk the line. Our children and grandchildren and maybe our spouses have assumed the right to be judge and jury of the lives they grew up with. I believe that is why many young people have fallen away from churches, and they tend not to apply roots to a church family. They see what they see and judge that those of faith can't be sincere if they fail.

So we must be aware that our lives are on display for the world to see and do our best to set the example of Godly living in a world run amuck. So when you fail, admit it. Don't let it become a habit and be sure to make amends of any mistakes and fallen moments.  This too, is watched and is the example for regaining your credibility before those with eager eyes and judging hearts.

Food for thought.

Don't Worry Hon 11/12/2021

 Good Morning,

The sunrise is right around the corner and I am sitting in my den drinking a very hot cup of Door County Autumn Spice Coffee. It is time to write.

Luke 6:31 And as you wish others would do to you, do so to them.

Later this morning I will be pheasant hunting with our two dogs, getting some exercise and hopefully shooting supper. A person who hunts needs a backup plan for dinner, if the game doesn't come home with him or her. My backup to roasted pheasant is a pot of potato soup and some French bread.

About a month ago, my mother in law asked my wife Rene if she was available this weekend to help her with her booth at a craft fair. Her mother still crochets items for sale and this weekend is a big craft fair event in her town. At 94 years old she does a marvelous job with her crafts and she usually sells out. But age now dictates that she have some help setting up and tearing down her stand of yarn. So my wife will be gone for most of the weekend.

I found it funny when Rene asked me if I was ok with the plan. I do all the cooking and I can tell you that I will be hunting somewhere Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. At night the fireplace will be lit and the tv channel playing will not be "Hallmark". I foresee bacon in my diet and the dogs will be tired. I will be fine.

She however did ask to let someone know where I will be hunting if I hunt alone. I will take care of that, so as to ease her mind.

My point of the day is this. Although at times I believe she worries too much, it is nice to know someone does worry about me and I owe it to her to be responsible enough to just provide the information she wants. I will inform a buddy as to where I will be hunting and if he doesn't hear from me he knows where to look. I owe it to Rene to ease her mind.

In relationships it is a give and take attitude that keeps the relationship healthy. It is the little give and takes that should become normal operating procedures and almost not given a thought once they become a habit. Taking the worry out of a weekend with her mother is the least I can do. And I just might save her some potato soup.

Have a great day. Be nice!

Veterans Day USA 11/11/2021

 Good Morning,

Thursday it is and if I squint I can see Friday coming my way quickly. I just poured a hot cup of Door County Bourbon Pecan Pie Coffee and now it is time to write.

Today in the USA we celebrate "Veterans Day" I wish to give my honor and respect to all those who have served and are serving our nation in the armed forces. May God always bless your steps. Thank you for your service!

Romans 13:7 Pay to all what is owed to them, taxes to whom taxes are owed, revenue to whom revenue is owed, respect to whom respect is owed, honor to whom honor is owed.

Miss you Dad. Semper Fi

Open For Prayer 11/10/2021

 Good Morning,

My cup was just filled with some Door County Maple Coffee and my heart is set in the right direction to tackle the day.

Job 22:6  For then you will delight yourself in the Almighty, and lift your face to God.

When we built our home in 1994 my wife Rene and I always said that this house belonged to God and that if at all possible it would be used for Him, if it was His desire. Over the years we have had the opportunity to join God in His work by using our home to serve others. On one occasion we made 600 biscuits with kids from our youth group for a church breakfast. I am pretty sure those days are behind us now.

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep.

One thing I hope that never ends is that our home remains a house of prayer. We believe our home should be open 24/7 for people needing prayer. You could say it likens to a hospital emergency room. We are always ready to pray for anyone or pray with them anytime. I for one, don't have a lot of talent, but I consider it an honor to go before the Lord for others. There is usually a Bible handy near our phones and Scripture can easily be referenced and used if needed to help provide comfort to a person in need. The phone does ring now and then in the middle of the night. We don't mind at all. I have needed to make a call like that myself.

Friends, I am not bragging about what we do. God get's all the glory for being willing to use two clowns like us. I am however challenging all of you to be willing to use your time, your talents, home or apartment for the glory of God. It somehow makes home sweet home a little sweeter.

God bless,

Marty

A Leader Is A Servant 11/9/2021

 Good Morning,

This day has a lot of miles in front of it and at the end of this day there will be plenty of miles behind it. I just poured myself a hot cup of Door County Maple Coffee and now it is time to write.

Jesus Washes His Disciples’ Feet John 13:1-17

13 It was just before the Passover Festival. Jesus knew that the hour had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end.

The evening meal was in progress, and the devil had already prompted Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, to betray Jesus. Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God; so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist. After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, are you going to wash my feet?”

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”

“No,” said Peter, “you shall never wash my feet.”

Jesus answered, “Unless I wash you, you have no part with me.”

“Then, Lord,” Simon Peter replied, “not just my feet but my hands and my head as well!”

10 Jesus answered, “Those who have had a bath need only to wash their feet; their whole body is clean. And you are clean, though not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was going to betray him, and that was why he said not every one was clean.

12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

There are good leaders and then there are great leaders. To be a great leader we need to understand that we are to serve those entrusted to us. We can never  think that anything is beneath us. We should be ready to answer the call when a need arises and those around us are buried in some type of work. We should roll up our sleeves and pitch in.

Just a  little food for thought. Are you ready to be a real leader?

Approach With Humility 11/8/2021

 Good Morning,

Monday arrived no matter how hard I tried to discourage it from waking me up. So I am content to have a job to go to and a to have a hot cup of Door County Caramel Apple Coffee to drink.

We all have been gifted with talents and abilities. In my studies of Scripture, I am keenly aware of our desires to tell others about the good things we do with our talents and abilities. In other words we like to promote our gifts as something we did and feel it is worthy to brag about. This is not a life of humility. It is far from it. We must remember that every talent or ability was gifted to us by God and He should get the credit for what we do. We should never be caught pumping ourselves up before others.

Now if someone wants to compliment us on something we did with our talents and abilities, we should say thank you and then add "God is good" or " He gets all the praise and glory".

Even better, let's go to the Lord in humbleness and thank Him for using us in His will.

Let Him if he so desires to, "Lift us up".

James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

Without Him, we are nothing.

Food for thought?

Waste Not. Want Not. 11/7/2021

 Good Morning,

My day started slowly just because I wanted it to. I am taking some extra time to write this morning and enjoy a cup of Door County Caramel Apple Coffee. I will be taking our two dogs out later to chase some pheasants and hopefully bring one or two home.

If my Dad were alive, today we would be celebrating his birthday. Yesterday as my wife Rene and I were talking about our parents on the way home from church, we both agreed that the one thing that really stands out about all four of our parents, is that they taught us not to be wasteful.

Even the smallest portion of food that was left over would be saved "for a lunch the next day", or food for the dog.  My dad could always find a use for  a cloth bag and some  rawhide boot laces. I have a small bag tied shut with a piece of rawhide which holds a set of wrenches in my truck.

I watched my wife the other day and she was doing something she learned from my Dad. I am bragging a bit here  but I believe Rene makes banana bread that is to die for. We have been eating off of one loaf for a few days. The loaf of bread was getting a little hard and I was gong to toss it. She said for me to wait and it would get new life. My Dad had told her about taking the bread when it got hard and slicing it, dipping it into egg batter and making French Toast with it. He said he saw some chef doing this on television years ago. Not  a crumb was wasted.

Friends, these are times to be frugal more than ever, But shouldn't we be frugal in good or bad times. Jesus set the example for us.

John 6:12 And when they had eaten their fill, he told His disciples, to "gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost."

I am not saying to become hoarders, but look for uses so as not to waste things.

God bless,

Marty

A Good Prayer For Today 11/6/2021

 Good Morning,

I might be awake, but I sure feel like I missed sleeping entirely. The old mug was just filled with Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee.

As I pondered through my mind as to what I would write about today, I stopped to pray for wisdom. But wisdom didn't come and I found myself reading Scripture instead. My reading led me to Psalm 51:10-12 and it led me to use the Psalm as my prayer to start the day.

Psalm 51-10-12 Create in me, a clean heart O My God, and renew  a steadfast spirit within me.

11. Do not cast me away from Your presence. And do not take your Holy Spirit from me.

12. restore to me the joy of Your salvation, and uphold me by Your generous Spirit.

I believe I found a great way to start this day in prayer. I sure needed something to grab on to today. So I am content with sharing this thought. Who would want to start today with  heart filled with yesterdays poor thoughts?

God bless,

Marty

Speak The Truth 11/5/2021

 Good Morning,

I should have been drinking some Door County Breakfast Blend Coffee by now. That isn't going to happen just yet. Someone forgot to set the coffee pot timer for 5:AM and that someone is me. I have only me to blame for a morning that doesn't have coffee yet.

Proverbs 11:14 For lack of guidance a nation falls, but victory is won through many advisors.

I thought about writing some thoughts on our nation, or any nation regarding the need for advisors who are in a position to give their thoughts to our leaders. But, I decided to talk about our families and personal lives for a moment.

"Stay engaged and not enraged". Everyone has their own thoughts on a process or two. Ideas come and ideas go. Some people are experts in a field and there are those who are "experts in every field". They have an opinion on everything, and many times their opinion is not worthless, but it also did not need to be shared. My wife leaves me alone when it comes to projects around the house, yet I am smart enough to solicit her ideas before I start. Once started on a project she leaves me alone and only offers support when asked for.

A house does need to be managed and the big things like purchases, major repairs, and health issues, might need a planning meeting, and continued discussion. But how to make toast is not needed unless it is your fourth grader's. first attempt at toast.

Yes this nation of ours needs many advisors, but the home really doesn't need a board of advisors to make toast. This shows a need to have some control over everything and is not advising out of love.

Food for thought!

Don't Forget To Say Thank You 11/4/2021

 Good Morning,

I am sitting at my desk sipping on a hot cup of Door County Bourbon Pecan Pie Coffee and watching our two dogs go back to sleep. I actually envy them today.

Yesterday my wife Rene, was exceptionally busy and most of what she was doing were things that I needed assistance with. She hadn't felt very well on Tuesday, but she was making up for lost time on Wednesday. She had her list of chores and errands to run and she was hard at it all day.

Last night after we both sat down for the evening, I walked over to where she was sitting and reading and thanked her for all that she had done for me on a busy Wednesday. I also told her that her hard work was very much appreciated. I couldn't help but notice that huge smile from just being verbally thanked. She replied with " You as well. That chicken soup was just what I needed".

Everyone likes to be appreciated and thanked. We have the power within us to bring a smile to a face just by thanking them. So today, if someone holds open a door for you, thank them. If you know someone is praying for you say thank you.

Proverbs 16:24 Kind words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.

Proverbs 18:4 A person's words can be life giving water.

Saying thank you is healthy for the recipient and for you as well.

God bless,

Marty

As The Seasons Change 11/3/2021

 Good Morning,

The day began with prayer for a few people heavy on my heart. The house is warming up from a frosty beginning. It seems as if we had shut off our furnace somehow and I woke up to more than a chill. The Door County Bourbon Pecan Pie Coffee arrived right on time and is steaming next to me.

Ecclesiastes 3:12-13 I perceived that there is nothing better for them than to be joyful and do good as long as they live, 13. also that everyone should eat and drink and take pleasure in all his toil, this is God's gift to man.

There is no doubt that where we live you can easily notice when the seasons change. We are now deep into the fall and the leaves are falling from the trees faster now. The gardens have been laid to rest until next spring and the crock pots seem to be churning out more stews and soups and less pot roasts. Winter is just around the corner. Our trucks and cars now have a window scraper and a snow brush at the ready. Extra clothes hats and gloves have also been packed in the vehicles, for that "just in case" you need some experience. Wood has been hauled in for the fireplace and bare feet are really not seen much at all in the house. Thanksgiving Day is on our minds for now, but is being shadowed by the thought of Christmas being right behind it.

Friends and family, seasons change and not just the weather. We too, go through seasons of change. A few years ago I barely thought much about retirement or Medicare. This February I turn 65 and am now researching my path for healthcare and medications.

You can't stop fall from turning to winter. You can't stop your life cycle either. I believe I am in the "Fall" of my life cycle and it is still some years away from Winter. (God Willing)

So as the crock pot contents change with the season, we too change a little, but my advice is this, enjoy life to the fullest, roll with what it brings you and make the best of it. My favorite clothing pieces are the items I can wear when it is cold outside. I love warm hats, flannel lined jeans, wool socks,  sweaters or flannel shirts. But come spring, I will concede my favorite clothes for something more appropriate to warmer weather.

May your coffee be hot, your crock pot full, and your heart beating for others. Let your walk be blessed from above and let the warmth of God near you, and keep you well.

Walking In The Right Direction. 11/2/2021

 Good Morning.

I have a long day ahead of me with a lot of driving to go with it. I will enjoy a hot cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee in the car and listen to some good Gospel music.

Roy Lessin is credited with this statement. "A man who walks with God is always moving in the right direction"

Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good.; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God.

Isaiah 30:21 And your ears shall hear a word behind, saying, "This is the way, walk in it," when you turn to the left or to the right.

Psalm 119:105 You Word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

This little lesson is simple. God never wants us to be on the wrong path. He desires to walk with us through thick and thin, He will never steer us wrong. When we abide by His word we cannot help but to be going in the right direction. We must humble ourselves and listen, then we need to obey.

Feeling like you are walking alone? Check yourself, and see if you have been following the directions of the world or God's directions. Walk the road less traveled, and you will never, ever, walk alone.

Getting Organized 11/1/2021

 Good Morning,

I am writing to you from inside a warm house. I was outside with our two dogs for awhile and this first blast of cold weather sent me back in, appreciating a hot cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee.

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace.

I work part time now for a company that provides a service to hospitals and clinics, and some commercial businesses. I like the work and it fills a gap in our finances, as I have yet to start taking my pension payments. So the part time job lets me be of service to others and I earn a paycheck.

In the process of performing this work I pretty much set my own schedule. I contact the clients and let them know when I am coming or ask them what time or day would be best. I order the the supplies needed to perform the service and do a lot of paperwork. I can't always say that my little portion of this work is always running like an on time train.. Schedules change, emergencies pop into the scheduling mix, the internet has been known not to cooperate. Small things that mess with the schedule and things out of my control can set me on some wobbly tracks. After assessing the work flow and stress level for October and sitting down to schedule out November I found a couple areas where some changes can be made to make things rum smoother. The old process needed aa makeover.

So my point for today is the reorganizing things in our lives, needs to be done now and then. A life of chaos can be fixed if we sit back, pray for ideas to fix or rearrange our habits and processes. I haven't felt organized personally for the last couple of months. Thus time for a process change.

Don't be afraid to leave the status quo and try something new in the family flow, finances, work flow or your free time. Start today with a new plan, one that you know is endorsed by God.

Have a great day, and get it done.

Marty
