Motivation Is Always Welcome Here 3/7/2025

 Good Morning,

The Door County Peanut Butter Crunch Coffee in my cup is super hot and is doing a great job this morning warming me up.

Colossians 3:23-24 Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men. Knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.

Sometime ago while I was still working, I attended a seminar on how to motivate your staff. During the seminar we were asked to state what motivates us to come to work every day.  I sat there and was drawing a blank in my thought process. But when it was my turn to state what motivated me to come to work. I was honest.

Prior to getting to me several others shared their motivation for coming to work every day. I worked in health care and I just didn't have the answers others in this group had. Some folks were driven by fulfilling their "calling" to heal and help the sick. Others said that being a nurse, doctor, or technician was a lifelong dream and it was this passion that drove them on a daily basis.

My answer came from the heart as well. I answered "My Pay Check". My family, our house, our dogs, our full freezer, our health insurance, our vehicles and our vacations motivated me to earn a paycheck every two weeks. Yes my work impacted patients but I never felt called to work in health care. I worked where God planted me.

I was motivated by results. I worked hard and did a good job and I was rewarded with a pay check. Most of all I never wanted anyone to say "The Bible reader, church goer, blog writer was a slacker." I wanted my work reputation to honor my God.

Friends it wasn't greed that motivated me, but I saw the results of "you go to work and they pay you." The second reason that I was motivated to go to work was the people I worked with. To this very day I miss some of them and when I look back I enjoyed working with some great people. Yes my role in the health care arena was a support role to the caregivers in the trenches, but I never saw them as mere health care workers, many of them had the role of friend.

I was also motivated to be able to retire and still have a full freezer, family, house etc.

What motivates some is a calling. Others like me. It was a pay check and the security that came from being paid for my time and realizing that where I was working and what I was doing was a gift from God, and over all, He was in charge of my performance and drive every day. That my friends, motivated me!

Food for thought. Spend some of your motivation, you can't take it with you. Do a good job. God is watching.

Marty
