A Dog That Listens 3/26/2025

 Good Morning,

I treated myself to a large, very hot mug of Door County Inn Keepers Blend Coffee and it is time to write.

Romans 10:17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ .

Yesterday morning as I was sitting outside for a few minutes with our two dogs, the geese returning North to mate flew by pretty close to our home. Their distinct honking could be heard as they approached closer to our property. They could not be seen just yet. The volume of their honking let me know that I probably would see them in a few seconds. Our youngest dog Leo also heard the honking. He looked up to see where the geese were and he froze in place from their calling out. Leo looked at me and I signaled him to sit with my hand. Leo knows what a goose sounds like and He knows now that when they are honking that close, he should be sitting and waiting for me to act. The geese did fly over our yard just clearing our roof. Neither Leo or I moved. Now if it was hunting season and I was in a place where shooting geese was legal, we would have had at least one down. Leo would then be called to retrieve it. He loves to retrieve geese.

My point for the day is this. If a dog can be taught to listen to the call of a goose and sit still, shouldn't we be willing to listen for God and be obedient to His word?

Leo was all proud of himself for doing what he has been taught and I wish I could say that he was consistently sitting at the honk, without coaxing. But in time that will come. Hopefully there will be lot's of opportunities next fall to hone our response. Leo knows the call of the goose and has seen what can happen when he listens and obeys the master.

When we fail to respond to the call of God though, we might miss the opportunity to go with Him and observe or take part in what He is doing. It is one thing to listen for Him, it is another thing to listen and obey. But God is patient and will offer other opportunities, but we must follow His instructions and act upon the call to go with Him.

Food for thought???

Can you be taught to listen and then make the right response to the Father?

Have a great day.

Marty
