Always excited to see what a storm brought to our yard the morning after. It was quite the storm for November. We had wind, rain, thunder and lightning in November? Go figure. So I think I will warm up the old body with a cup of Door County Highlander Grog Coffee and leave for work.
Our grandson will be coming for a visit soon and while speaking with him on the phone the other night I asked if he had anything special on his mind for a dinner menu during our time together. He mentioned that it would be nice to make a big pot of the "good chili". I have to agree that there is nothing better after a cold day duck hunting than a hot bowl of chili. And since we are planning to hunt, chili it will be.
The kettle above belonged to my grandmother, and was handed down to us by my mother. Many, many, pots of spaghetti sauce, soups and chili has simmered in this old pot. I can still see ravioli coming to the top of the water as it started to boil.
We own many things, but some of them trigger happy memories. This kettle causes me to remember the people that stood in front of this pot stirring the contents to serve it to us because they loved to see their families well fed and happy. The pot is still used for that purpose today. I wrote not very long ago about a small pot we use to make soup and then give the soup away. This kettle is used for larger volumes and often feeds a lot of guests, especially at our annual Christmas Caroling and Soup Open House. I think the former owners would approve. They all practiced hospitality! Don't pass up the chance to share a cup of soup with anyone. Use the home or apartment God has granted you, to be hospitable to others, even strangers.
Isaiah 58:7
"Is it not to divide your bread with the hungry And bring the homeless poor into the house; When you see the naked, to cover him; And not to hide yourself from your own flesh?
Hebrews 13:2
Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.
Enjoy what you have, but use it to practice hospitality.
Nothing says love like a dish made especially for someone.
God bless,
Marty
